What biscuits are made in Carlisle's McVitie's factory?

To celebrate National Biscuit Day 2025 (Thursday, May 29) the News & Star had an exclusive tour around the oldest biscuit factory in the world, which just happens to be on our doorstep. The home of Carr's and McVitie's biscuits, among others, has been part of the Carlisle landscape for almost 200 years. It produces 246 different products and even enough bourbon biscuits to go around the earth two times a year. But do you know exactly what products are made inside of it? We have compiled a list of 10 of our favourite biscuits that are made in Carlisle. Bourbon Creams Custard Creams Ginger Nuts Tasties Coconut Rings Digestives Mini Chocolate Digestives Nice Biscuits Shorties Fruit Shortcakes Carr's Table Water Crackers (classed as savoury biscuits) A selection of McVitie's biscuits (Image: Newsquest) When asked how he was celebrating National Biscuit Day 2025, Mark Ebdon, Carlisle's factory general manager said: 'Every day is National Biscuit Day for us!' In celebration of the day, McVitie's also revealed new original research. The Great British Biscuit Audit by McVitie's saw 2,000 British adults polled and revealed that Chocolate Digestives once again take the crown as the UK's favourite biscuit. When it comes to dunking, tea remains the favourite at 45 per cent. The News & Star's exclusive tour of inside the factory will be published this weekend.

Snow Patrol fans are only now realising what 'Chasing Cars' means after 19 years

Snow Patrol fans are only just realising the meaning behind their hit song "Chasing Cars", which was released 19 years ago. It turns out some people have been ignorant for years When it comes to bands who have a string of huge hits, Snow Patrol is probably up there with some of the best. From "Chocolate" to "Run" to "Open Your Eyes" - the band has endless popular tracks to their name. However, one of their most famous songs is loved by many, even though some people don't appear to know what it means. The Northern Irish Scottish rock band actually first came together in 1994 in Dundee, and comprises Gary Lightbody (vocals, guitar), Nathan Connolly (guitar, backing vocals) and Johnny McDaid (piano, guitar, keyboards, backing vocals). Lightbody is the band's only remaining original member decades later. Even though the band has been making music for decades, it turns out there are still some facts people don't actually know about them, including the meaning behind their hit "Chasing Cars". The song, released in 2006, was reported to be the most-played song of the 21st century on UK radio back in 2019. ‌ Despite this, a lot of people still don't know what the lyrics really mean, and the topic recently came up on social media platform Quora. One person wrote: "What is the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol about?" ‌ Naturally, the question encouraged a variety of responses, with many fans quick to offer their ideas. All sorts of thoughts were put forward. One wrote: "I absolutely adore this song. I think it's a pretty basic love song actually. It's about a young man trying to express his love for his partner. They sing 'those three words are not enough'. You have to assume he's talking about the words 'I love you' right? "I love the lyrics 'forget what we're told, before we get too old'. To me, that means that they should not waste their youthful love no matter what. Perhaps their parents, or other elders, have tried to discourage them from being together. "And the chorus simply asks whether his lover will just stay with him in their love, and shut out everything else. The reference to the 'garden bursting into life' is, I think, just a reference to how beautiful love can be. "I don't think there are really any real hidden meanings in this song. I think it's just a beautiful love song from one person to another." ‌ One more added: "I think what the song is implying is that it's about a guy who is trying to persuade a woman to be his girl." However, despite being a love song, the band have previously confirmed what the term "Chasing Cars" actually means. You may be surprised to learn what the answer is. What does Chasing Cars mean? Lead singer Gary Lightbody actually composed the song, though it's still credited to all then-members of Snow Patrol, including Jonny Quinn, Nathan Connolly, Tom Simpson and Paul Wilson. ‌ According to reports, Gary Lightbody is said to have written the song after becoming sober following a binge of white wine. He is claimed to have been sitting in the garden of song producer Jacknife Lee's Kent cottage. Previously speaking to Rolling Stone, he said: "It's the purest love song that I've ever written. There's no knife-in-the-back twist. When I read these lyrics back, I was like, 'Oh, that's weird.' "All the other love songs I've written have a dark edge." The phrase "Chasing Cars" was also said to be inspired by Gary's father, and it refers to a girl Gary was infatuated with when he was younger. "You're like a dog chasing a car. You'll never catch it and you just wouldn't know what to do with it if you did," he said.

River Island's 'perfect' £42 dress that's 'giving Odd Muse vibes'

River Island shoppers are loving the dress on TikTok - with some saying it's "classy" and gives "Odd Muse vibes" River Island shoppers are wowed by a "classy" dress that looks like one from an upscale label. The retailer, known for its trendy fashion and accessories, might just have a new must-have item in store. The beloved high street brand is selling the Long Sleeve Square Neck Mini Dress for £42, available in various hues; brown, black, cream polka dot, green, pink, and red. Shoppers can find it in sizes six through 22. The chic dress boasts a square neck, long sleeves, decorative pockets, and a flattering mini cut. River Island's website advises customers to machine wash the garment at no more than 30°C and to cool iron it, but cautions against dry cleaning. Shoppers eager for similar styles will find options across other retailers too. Next offers the Friends Like These Black Long Sleeve Square Neck Mini Dress at £36. PrettyLittleThing is currently running a deal on the Chocolate Structured Woven Boat Neck Shift Dress, retailing at only £17.25, reduced from £32. Meanwhile, New Look has the Black Pocket Detail Mini Dress up for grabs at £27.99, reports the Mirror. On TikTok, the River Island dress has garnered attention, with user Shileen (@shileen18) showcasing the cream polka dot iteration in a recent video, captioned: "Odd Muse vibes from @riverisland." Fashion account @thescousestylists also posted footage featuring the dress in black during a River Island visit, with the post reading: "The perfect black dress from @riverisland." Overlaying text on the clip said: "This dress is giving Odd Muse vibes." In the video, the pair chatted about the dress and their styling ideas, remarking: "This is giving Odd Muse vibes. Oh, it is, yeah." They also thought it would be a "nice" choice for the races and described it as "classy" and perfect for a night out, further commenting that it's "very Odd Muse." They noted it was "such an elegant and classy dress." Some customers have turned to the review platform TrustPilot to voice their opinions on River Island, particularly regarding the larger sizes, which could be something to bear in mind when ordering online. One individual mentioned: "Lovely quality but not great sizing." Another shopper expressed: "The quality of most clothes I've tried on are good... but the sizing is HUGE!! I recently bought some new UK size 6 shorts, skirts, jeans and trousers and they slid down my hips and legs! They wouldn't stay on my hips! The dress was huge on me too! I've had to return most of the order (kept the UK size 4 items)." The dress resembles the upscale Odd Muse's The Ultimate Muse Split Sleeve Mini Dress. The premium dress retails at £135, while the River Island one is priced at £42. Both dresses share a similar structured style, complete with long sleeves, ornamental pockets, and defined waists, although the Odd Muse creation features a raised neckline and broader, more flared sleeves than the River Island alternative. For buyers not wanting to break the bank, choosing the River Island dress represents a potential saving close to £93. River Island's Long Sleeve Square Neck Mini Dress can be purchased online here.

M&S axes popular summer staple from all UK supermarket stores

The news came to light after a number of shoppers reached out to the chain asking where the products had gone. Likely due to the recent heatwave and warm weather over the last few weeks M&S discontinued one of its beloved summer products, leaving shoppers heartbroken. The upmarket supermarket chain confirmed recently on X - formerly Twitter - that it had axed its Plant Kitchen ice cream. The news came to light after a number of shoppers reached out to the chain asking where the products had gone. Likely due to the recent heatwave and warm weather over the last few weeks. ‌ One X user asked: "Have you stopped doing the plant kitchen ice cream?" A second also wanted to know asking M&S: "Have you discontinued the Plant Kitchen vanilla ice cream?" ‌ M&S responded to the X user asking if there was any flavour in particular they wanted to know about, as they would check with the supermarket's food team. The X user noted that the vanilla product was their favourite; however, he had not seen both of the Plant Kitchen flavours for a while. M&S first released vegan ice cream flavours back in 2020 under its Plant Kitchen range. The first two flavours were Raspberry Ripple and Chocolate. Both products were made with coconut cream with the former flavour consisting of vanilla and Scottish raspberries, and the latter with chocolate. In 2022, M&S launched three new flavours with Madagascan Vanilla, Mango & Passionfruit, and Vegan Salted Caramel & Biscuit. All the ice-cream flavours were available in M&S stores and retailed at £3 for a 500ml tub However, M&S has confirmed that it has now discontinued its Plant Kitchen Ice Cream range. In the post to X, M&S said: "Hi there - I'm sorry for the delay! As suspected, the Plant Kitchen ice creams have been discontinued." The retailer did not share why it's own-brand range had been scrapped from stores, noting that it now stocked Booja Booja Vanilla ice cream, and Caramel Pecan Praline ice cream. They added: "I hope this helps!" ‌ Join Money Saving Club's specialist topics For all you savvy savers and bargain hunters out there, there's a golden opportunity to stretch your pounds further. Veganism and plant-based diets became incredibly popular towards the end of the 2010s and continued into the early 2020s. The launch of the "Veganuary" campaign, which started in 2014 and saw participants commit to being vegan for the entire month of January, spearheaded the awareness of the diet. Research by comparison site Finder suggested there were an estimated 2.5million vegans in the UK in 2024. This equates to 4.7% of the population, and the number has increased by roughly 1.1 million since 2023. Due to the rise, many businesses and food manufacturers started to create vegan and plant-based ranges. However, the momentum for the movement has since slowed down, and companies have been slowly reducing the number of vegan products in their ranges. Many are citing the cost of manufacturing and the drop in demand as the reasons for the moves. Most recently, Nestle announced that it was discontinuing its Vegan KitKat product from the UK - with the treat set to be gone by the summer.
