High bacteria levels found in several popular Charleston area waterways. Here's where to avoid this Memorial Day weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — If you're looking to hit the water for Memorial Day this weekend, Charleston Waterkeeper says there are a few popular spots you may want to avoid. The group identified multiple sites in its May 23 water quality report where high levels of Enterococcus bacteria were found: Northbridge Park, Hendricks Park, Hobcaw Creek, two areas of Shem Creek, and a portion of James Island Creek. Elevated bacteria levels can indicate possible contamination by fecal waste and may mean that harmful pathogens are present in the water, according to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES). Exposure can lead to an increased risk of serious health infections, such as Cholera, Tuberculosis, Staph, and Vibrio, among others. Charleston Waterkeeper reported good news for boaters in the Charleston Harbor, as all tested sites meet the state standard for recreational activity. Spots around the area, including Brittlebank Park, are considered safe for swimming. Further up the Ashley River, Filbin Creek — a consistent problem spot — continues to register high bacteria levels, as did Northbridge Park. Opt for a splash in the Wando River near the Daniel Island Children's Park instead. Report identifies 10 US beaches that are 'hotspots' for bacteria The group found mixed results in Mount Pleasant, too. Swimming in Hobcaw Creek or Shem Creek north of Coleman Boulevard is not advised. Though bacteria levels appear okay at Shem Creek Park, swimmers should use caution. The Cove is a good option for water-based activities this weekend. The mixed results continue on James Island, where the creek near Folly Road is considered unsafe for swimming. Further down by Harbor View Road is clear, as is the rest of the island at rest of the island at Sol Legare, Clark Sound, and the Folly River. It's a green light for beachgoers this Memorial Day weekend as SCDES' latest data shows no signs of trouble from Isle of Palms to Seabrook Island. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Bharat Biotech's oral cholera vaccine Hillchol clears phase 3 trials

Bharat Biotech, the makers of Covaxin, on Tuesday said that their oral cholera vaccine Hillchol has demonstrated against both the Ogawa and Inaba serotypes of Cholera in both adults and children in a phase 3 clinical study across 1800 individuals. Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Studies have estimated that 2.86 million cases and 95,000 deaths occur annually. "Global demand for OCVs is close to 100 million doses a year, and given that only one manufacturer supplies them, there is a global shortage. Bharat Biotech's facilities in Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar have a capacity to produce up to 200 million doses of Hillchol," the company said. Sanofi India makes an oral cholera vaccine The double-blind, randomised phase 3 clinical trial was evaluating safety, immunogenicity and non-inferiority as well as a lot-to-lot consistency of single component oral cholera vaccine Hillchol in comparison to a comparator vaccine in an 1800 participant study across 10 clinical sites in India. In this study, participants were divided into three age groups: adults over 18 years, children aged 5 to under 18 years, and infants aged 1 to under 5 years. They were randomized in a 3:1 ratio to receive either Hillchol or a comparator above study findings have been published in the ScienceDirect, Vaccine journal. The primary endpoint focused on the proportion of participants achieving over 4-fold increase in vibriocidal antibody titres against Ogawa and Inaba serotypes 14 days after two doses. Bharat Biotech claimed that Hillchol demonstrated 4-fold rise in vibriocidal antibodies against both Ogawa (68.3 per cent) and Inaba (69.5 per cent) serotypes, proving non-inferiority to licensed vaccines. It also demonstrated a strong safety profile and was well-tolerated across all age groups including infants less than 1 year old. "This publication reaffirms our commitment to advancing vaccines built on rigorous research, thorough clinical trials, and reliable clinical data. It highlights our continued commitment to providing affordable, effective, and accessible vaccines for the populations who need them the most,' said Krishna Ella, Executive Chairman of Bharat Biotech. Dr. Ella added, 'Cholera is a vaccine-preventable disease that has faced a surge in outbreaks along with a huge shortage of vaccines. The new generation Oral Cholera Vaccine Hillchol, featuring a simplified single stable O1 Hikojima strain, inducing robust antibodies against both Ogawa and Inaba serotypes, aims to enhance production efficiency and affordability, particularly in lower- and middle-income countries where waterborne diseases continue to pose serious health threats.'

Over 60 die in Congo flooding amid cholera, continued fighting: UN

Amid fighting and disease, deadly floods posed additional dire challenges in South Kivu province of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), UN humanitarians said. "Local authorities in South Kivu report that overnight flooding in Fizi territory between May 8-9 killed more than 60 people," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Monday. "Many people are still missing, and search efforts continue. More than 150 houses were also destroyed, leaving 1,000 people homeless." The office said the officials warned that continued heavy rainfall threatens further damage and have issued an urgent appeal for humanitarian assistance. The deluge worsens existing vulnerabilities, where ongoing clashes and a recent surge in cholera cases heighten the risk of a major public health crisis. OCHA said local authorities convened an emergency meeting in Uvira to coordinate response efforts. In North Kivu province, the humanitarians said hostilities also continue, and officials report that nine civilians were killed and 50 others injured in an overnight attack in a village of Lubero territory on Wednesday and Thursday. Further north, in Ituri province, OCHA said assessments by its humanitarian partners indicate that more than 40,000 people arrived in the Fataki and Rety areas of Djugu territory between February and April. The new arrivals were mainly fleeing violence in other regions or returning home from previous displacement during a period of calm. "The crisis is overwhelming already strained services in these areas, affecting 155,000 people," OCHA said. "Humanitarian partners report acute needs across all sectors, including shelter, food and healthcare." The office said the world body continues to mobilise assistance despite access constraints and funding gaps, Xinhua news agency reported. According to the World Health Organization, Cholera outbreaks occur regularly in some countries. In others, they are less frequent, and it may be years between outbreaks. Cholera is linked to limited access to safe water, basic sanitation facilities and poor hygiene practices. This may be due to conflict, population displacement, climate events like cyclones, floods or drought, and lack of investment in maintaining and improving WASH services and infrastructure. Preventing and controlling cholera involves a combination of strengthening surveillance, improving water, sanitation and hygiene, increasing risk communication and community engagement, improving access to quality treatment and implementing oral cholera vaccine campaigns.

RFK Jr. Gets Crap For Taking Grandkids Swimming In Sewage-Tainted Waters

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. grossed out a lot of people on Sunday after he posted a photo of himself swimming with his grandkids in waters known to be teeming with sewage. The secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services wrote that he was on a 'Mother's Day hike in Dumbarton Oaks Park with Amaryllis, Bobby, Kick, and Jackson, and a swim with my grandchildren, Bobcat and Cassius in Rock Creek.' The park is located in Washington, D.C. Mother's Day hike in Dumbarton Oaks Park with Amaryllis, Bobby, Kick, and Jackson, and a swim with my grandchildren, Bobcat and Cassius in Rock Creek. — Robert F. Kennedy Jr (@RobertKennedyJr) May 11, 2025 Kennedy left out the fact that (other) health officials don't recommend swimming in Rock Creek, since that's where a lot of sewage from the capital flows ― even during dry spells, the Washingtonian noted on Monday. The National Park Service website alsowarns against swimming in Rock Creek, saying the 'high levels of bacteria and other infectious pathogens 'make swimming, wading, and other contact with the water a hazard to human (and pet) health.' HuffPost reached out to Kennedy's office for comment about the swim, but no one immediately responded. This is far from the most unsanitary and ill-advised thing Kennedy has done. He notoriously sawed off a dead whale's head and transported it on top of the family's minivan, and also dumped a dead bear in Central Park. So people on social media were shocked, but not surprised, that he took his grandkids swimming in crap.
