Moraes scores as Selangor hold Asean champions Buriram

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor started their Asean Club Championship Group A campaign with a 1-1 draw against defending champions Buriram United at the Chang Arena on Wednesday. Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes gave Selangor a 38th-minute lead against his former team before Peter Zulj scored a late equaliser for the Thais in the eighth minute of stoppage time. The Red Giants were expected to struggle against the Thai powerhouse. However, they managed to contain Buriram's attack, a result of Japanese coach Katsuhito Kinoshi's tactical plan. Moraes, 24, had a chance to score in the 25th minute but his shot went wide. However, he made it count in the 38th minute, beating goalkeeper Chatchai Bootprom. Buriram almost found an equaliser in the 41st minute but Thanakrit Chotmuangpak's effort went wide, and the first half ended with Selangor holding a one-goal lead. In the second half, Buriram coach Osmar Loss brought on Suphanat Mueanta for Thanakrit and Peter Zulj for Phitiwat Sookjitthammakul to take control of the game. The changes gave Buriram more attacking power, but Selangor goalkeeper Kalamullah Al Hafiz denied them with several fine blocks. However, Zulj headed in the equaliser from a corner kick deep into stoppage time to share the points.

Right man for the job: Chrigor Moraes will be leading Selangor's frontline against his former club Buriram United tonight. — Selangor FC PETALING JAYA: Selangor begin their Asean Club Championship journey tonight with the toughest of openers – away to reigning champions Buriram United at the Chang Arena in Thailand. The Thai treble winners, who lifted the inaugural crown in May after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Vietnam's Cong An Ha Noi, are widely regarded as the benchmark in South-East Asian football. Striker Chrigor Moraes, who leads the line for the Red Giants and a former Buriram player himself, certainly knows the score. But he insists the team must balance respect for Buriram with belief in themselves. 'Because Buriram are such a strong team, it's very difficult to play them at their home ground,' said the Brazilian. 'But I remind my teammates we must be strong and concentrated. We too have good players and I believe we can take the game to them. As for Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi, he sees the tough challenge of taking on Buriram as a great opportunity. 'This kind of game definitely makes us stronger,' said the Japanese tactician. 'Buriram have 16 foreigners in their squad. I don't know who will play against us but we are looking forward to see what they bring. For us, the focus is to keep our style, concentrate on our football and fight 100 percent. That's our preparation.' Kinoshi, who previously served as an assistant coach for the Serbian national team, knows the scale of the task ahead. Buriram not only boast depth but also pedigree, with several players of international calibre. 'They are one of the strongest teams in South-East Asia along with Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). But last season we earned the right to face these kinds of teams. 'I am very proud of my players and our work. To be here, to be playing Buriram, is an honour. Now we must show our style against them.' Selangor head into their debut on the Asean stage after finishing as runners-up to JDT in both the Super League and FA Cup last season. The Chang Arena has long been a fortress for Buriram and Selangor will be wary of the champions' ability to punish mistakes. For Selangor, the trip to Buriram is more than just a group-stage opener; it is a statement of intent. And whether they leave Thailand with points or not, Kinoshi has made it clear that the Red Giants will not compromise on their identity. 'We must show our football. We must fight and we must be proud to play against one of Asia's best.'

Moraes ready to live up to the hype after signing for Selangor

No time to rest: Chrigor Moraes in action during Selangor's training session. — Selangor FC PETALING JAYA: When Chrigor Moraes signed for Selangor ahead of the new season, the buzz among the Red Giants faithful was immediate. The Brazilian attacker arrived with a reputation built in Thailand's top flight and was quickly seen as a player who could help push the club to new heights. But with high expectations come immense pressure, something Moraes, 24, welcomes with open arms. 'I'm a professional player. I like challenges,' he said with quiet confidence. 'I enjoy playing under pressure with big teams, and Selangor are one of those teams. Everyone here is ready to fight for the name of Selangor.' The move to the Malaysian Super League came at a key point in Moraes' career. Still under contract with Thai powerhouse Buriram United, with a year remaining on his deal, the Brazilian was already attracting interest from clubs both within Thailand and across Asia. But when Selangor came knocking, the decision was clear. 'I had many offers from other clubs in Thailand and even from other countries. 'But I chose Selangor because they're a big club, and I liked their project. 'When the offer came while the Thai League was still going on, it felt like the right time. 'Selangor bought my contract, and now I'm fully focused on giving everything for this club.' At Selangor, Moraes joins a squad with ambition and depth. As the new season approaches, the expectations from fans are sky-high, not just to compete, but to win. That's the kind of environment the striker thrives in. 'I will do my best to help my teammates achieve our goals this season. I know the fans expect a lot, and I'm here to give everything, on and off the pitch.'

Samba time for Red Giants

New kid on the block: Red Giants' Chrigor Moraes showing off his new colours. — Selangor FC PETALING JAYA: Selangor have added Brazilian firepower to their frontline with the signing of striker Chrigor Moraes and there could be more from the Land of Samba. The 25-year-old Moraes is the second foreign signing for next month's Super League season, following the arrival of Thai international midfielder Picha Autra. Embarking on a new chapter in Malaysia, the confident and articulate forward is focused on settling in quickly with his new team. 'Honestly, I'm very excited to start this new chapter,' said Moraes, who had played for Buriram United in Thailand and featured in the AFC Champions League Elite and the Asean Club Championships. He also played for PT Prachuap last year and scored 10 goals and two assists in just 13 games and emerged as one of the top scorers of the league. 'Playing abroad always comes with big challenges, but I arrived with an open heart and a strong will to adapt as quickly as possible,' said Moraes. 'From my time in Thailand, I've learned that this mindset helps me settle into the team culture faster. 'I did take the time to get to know the club by watching their matches, following the team on social media, and trying to understand their style of play. 'I know I still have a lot to learn, especially the language, but I'm fully committed. I'll work hard to score goals and help the team achieve their targets this season.' Born in Cachoeira do Sul, Brazil, Moraes began his professional journey with Brasil de Pelotas, making his Serie B debut in 2018 before moving to Red Bull Brasil. His breakout year came in 2023 with Portuguesa, where he lit up the Copa Paulista by netting seven goals in 12 appearances, a performance that ultimately earned him a move abroad. The Red Giants are also reportedly close to landing former Kedah and Chonburi forward Willian Lira, with sources confident that it's a done deal. Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi believes the club have made a smart signing in Moraes, praising the striker's maturity and hunger for growth. 'Chrigor has valuable experience in South-East Asia and brings great energy,' said Kinoshi. 'He will play an important role in our attacking setup and is expected to contribute both goals and assists.'
