Staffordshire Police patrol M6 to stop summer crash spike

Motorway patrols have taken place along the M6 to try to tackle a summer spike in operation near junction 13 in Staffordshire on Wednesday saw five police forces involved and targeted drivers carrying abnormal loads or at risk of causing Chris Moss, from Staffordshire Police, said the roads were particularly busy in the summer months with an increase in both haulage and holidaymakers."The days are brighter, they're longer so you've got more opportunity for people to get out on the roads and for hauliers to be moving heavy loads as well," he said. Officers from the Midlands and the north-west teamed up for Operation Spotlight, working with officers from other highways suspected of breaking the law were pulled over to be questioned and their vehicles examined. James Scorgie's lorry was pulled over but, after checks, both vehicle and its 40-tonne load were found to be fully compliant and the driver said he welcomed the action. "If this machine fell off and landed on a car, people aren't going home at the end of the day. This way it just means that we all run safely," he said. The action was part of a national police campaign to tackle the so-called fatal four causes of road crashes: Speeding, driving under the influence of drink and drugs, not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone. Chemung County introduces new transit buses

CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) — People in Chemung County should keep their eyes out for some shiny, new, green buses this week. Announced in a release from the Chemung County Executive's Office, Chris Moss asks Courtney Dunn, Chemung County's Transit Manager questions about Chemung County's new transit buses in a special sneak peek video. Dunn explained the bus being shown in the video is one of five brand new buses that were ordered by the county, and each cost about $530,000, she further stated, only three of the five have come in so far. The expenses are 80% federally funded and the other 20% split, with 10% coming from the county and the remaining 10% from New York State, Dunn said. Potential expansion to include semi-truck parking coming to gas station in Elmira The outside of the new buses is a lighter shade of green with a white swirl design on the side, Dunn said it's a total rebrand of the old buses. 'We did a marketing, rebranding, it started last year with Idea Kraft out of Binghamton, so it's just something fresh and new, showing people that we're on the map, because we are,' Dunn explained. 'So you'll see the little map, like the location dot on the side of the bus, it's just showing that we're out here and we'll get you where you need to go,' she said. A couple of the buses are slated to hit the streets the week of Monday, May 26, Dunn exclaimed. The routes of the new buses aren't solidified, but Dunn said the plan is to spread the new buses throughout the county, with each switching routes. Swansea café named among the best in the world

A list of the top 50 cafés in the world has been released by The Telegraph, featuring coffee shops from locations like Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna and Australia. Telegraph journalist Chris Moss, introducing the list, said: "A great café is as important a pilgrimage site as a cathedral, a world-class museum, an ancient ruin or a modern architectural marvel. "When I travel, wherever I travel, I seek out a café. A place to sit down and think and watch – and enjoy a strongish espresso – is more important to me than museums, monuments, temples, churches and, even, restaurants. How many cups of tea/coffee should you drink a day? "Nowhere quite represents a place like its cafés. What would Vienna, Rome and Paris be without theirs? "It's not just the history or the opulence. It's the window on the world." The top 50 best cafés in the world The best cafés in the world, according to The Telegraph, are: Swansea café named among the best in the world Kardomah - Morris Buildings, 11 Portland St, Swansea - has been named among the best cafés in the world by The Telegraph, the only place in Wales to make the list. It ranked 13th on the list and was described as a "golden oldie" providing a "nostalgia fix" for its visitors. The Telegraph said: "Not the original Swansea Kardomah – Hitler put paid to that in 1941 – but it feels and looks like it. "Opened in 1957, this wonderful, spacious, family-friendly café-restaurant still has original wood panelling, tiled floor and deco-ish reliefs, providing a nostalgia fix for its many senior clients. "As further proof that caffs are about time-travel, Doctor Who used the Kardomah as a location and Russell T Davies has been spotted sipping here. "The old Castle St 'Kardomah Gang' included Dylan Thomas, Alfred Janes and Vernon Watkins; this one is frequented by the people they wrote about and painted." The nostalgic, South Wales café is also a hit with its guests, boasting a 4.5 (out of 5) rating on Tripadvisor from 255 reviews. One visitor to Kardomah said: "Been here for years would 100% recommend it. Tea cakes the size of plates, and fabulous coffee. Can't ask for anything more." Another person added: "Used to come here with my parents 40 years ago. It's exactly how I remember it. "Spent an hour here waiting for an appointment and had eggs on toast end endless coffee refills. "Lovely staff. Knocks spots off Starbucks and the like. This would be my coffee local if I still lived in Swansea." RECOMMENDED READING: While a third person commented: "The absolute BEST PLACE. Food is delicious, the homemade Cawl is the best I ever tasted. "The service is fast and friendly, consistently excellent. "Totally quirky inside. Just perfect in every way. Prices so reasonable."

Elmira correction officers remain on strike day after termination message

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Striking correction officers were still across from the Elmira Correctional Facility on Sunday despite being told the night before that those who didn't return to work that day would be fired. Nearly 250 officers and supporters stood on Davis Street on the morning of March 2, and around 100 were still there that evening. Strikers are calling for safer conditions and for the state to repeal the HALT Act. The New York State Office of Employee Relations sent a message to strikers stating that those who didn't return to work on March 1, the day mandated by the consent award, would be fired on March 2. Previous: All striking correction officers to be fired Sunday The striking correction officers and sergeants were also told that they would lose their health insurance on Monday, March 3, two weeks after the strike began on Feb. 17. The health insurance termination will be backdated to when each officer went on strike. Chemung County Executive Chris Moss, who joined the strike last week, told 18 News that he was very disappointed in New York Governor Kathy Hochul's actions and how the state is placing correction officers in a dangerous position following the implementation of the HALT Act. Moss added that Governor Hochul can do a better job of meeting the correction officers halfway. Chemung County Legislator Rodney Strange posted a message of support on Facebook on Sunday morning that told COs not to give up and not to return until the HALT Act is repealed. Strange joined the strike on multiple occassions and has posted numerous messages of support. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
