'It should be all systems go' - Chris O'Donnell wins fitness race, ready to play part in China
For Chris O'Donnell, the first race has already been run – trying to get a nagging hip injury under control before this weekend's World Relays in Guangzhou, China. 'I'll be ready, I'll be running,' he says. 'Just in the nick of time.' The two-time Olympian from Sligo has been a pivotal part of the Irish mixed 4x400m team in recent years, helping them to world and Olympic finals along with European gold in Rome last year. But in recent weeks his presence in Guangzhou was in doubt, O'Donnell straining a tendon in his right hip, an issue he can trace back to his teenage years, when his chief focus was on soccer. Whether it was a childhood spent kicking ball with his right leg or something inherent in his anatomy, his stride length has always been longer from his right side than his left. 'That's been going on for years,' he says. 'I've been to many physios and there's not a whole lot you can do other than strengthening up my left side, but my injury record over the years has been very good, so I can't complain too much.' O'Donnell joined his Irish teammates at their training camp in Hong Kong last week and, with daily treatments from physios, his hip turned a corner earlier this week. 'I could have stayed home and avoided the jetlag, but I've been part of this team for long enough – I feel I should be here,' he says. 'It should be all systems go.' Ireland has teams competing in the men's and women's 4x400m along with the mixed 4x400m, and a top-14 finish will secure qualification for the World Championships in Tokyo. A top-two finish in any of Saturday's heats will secure their spot both in Tokyo and in Sunday's finals, while teams that fall short can still secure qualification with a top-two finish in the second round on Sunday. Ireland won mixed 4x400m bronze at the World Relays in the Bahamas last year, but O'Donnell says the focus here is not on medals. He said 'nobody is going to be doubling up on the first day' of action and the Irish will 'spread our eggs across a few baskets', though the line-ups will only be revealed about an hour before the races. 'The one secret we don't have is that our goal is to qualify three teams, not to prioritise one event or get medals,' he says. 'If it comes to a stage where one is qualified on day one and we go into day two needing to prioritise another, that's what we'll do instead of taking the final seriously. The women's team are in an incredibly strong position, almost certain to qualify. The mixed is in a very strong position too.' As for the men's 4x400m, it's been eight years since O'Donnell raced with a full-strength Irish team and there is a strong cohort of Irish athletes that includes Olympians Cillín Greene, Jack Raftery and Marcus Lawler along with Callum Baird and rising star Conor Kelly. O'Donnell says it's been 'a long time coming' and he's hopeful the men can also secure a spot in Tokyo. 'The squad has definitely improved. We had three guys who ran 45 seconds last year and we had a few guys running 46s. As a squad we're getting there. We have been watching the girls doing well recently and we've kind of been saying, 'We need to get our act together now.' 'We need to get four of our best lads in the best form, passing the baton well around on the track. We haven't done that in eight years and we're going to do that this weekend and see what happens.' O'Donnell was among those to benefit from an increased investment in the relays by Sport Ireland this year, bumped up to the top-level podium tier, receiving €40,000. 'It makes a huge difference, especially as someone who has never been sponsored in my career,' he says. 'If I have to work, slog a 9-5 and then do this really hard training, to fit in a workload around that, I simply cannot train as hard. And not training as hard equals not as good results.'

From bureaucracy to breathwork: IAS Balvinder Kumar is now a wellness warrior who hopes to combat India's suicide crisis
Followers of fitness influencer Chris O'Donnell, popularly known as Creeohdee, are still processing the news of his death. Ironically, he died by suicide. Back home, a social media influencer in Chhattisgarh live-streamed her suicide. According to a National Crime Records Bureau report, India is the suicide capital of the world. And that's what Balvinder Kumar hopes to change. The retired IAS officer, who once navigated power corridors, is now a passionate mental health advocate. He founded Mind Therapy, a wellness sanctuary focused on mental health. 'Mind Therapy began as a platform powered by AI and licensed therapists offering consultations, meditation coaching and stress management tools. Today, we also have a physical centre in Delhi, where people can explore sound therapy, energy healing and meditation workshops as well,' says the 1981 cadre IAS, who was at the helm of some very high-profile government projects and some very sensitive postings in public administration, mining, and real estate. His passion for mindfulness was sparked during a turbulent period in 2008, when he was controversially suspended over land allotment for a INR1,600 crore rail coach factory in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. 'The inquiry cleared me and the suspension was revoked in nine months, but through that period, it was meditation and breathwork that kept me going,' says Kumar, a certified mindfulness teacher and author of four books. Having worked in a high-stress environment he understands the pressure that modern-day living entails. Therefore, he is always ready with practical meditation techniques. 'One of the easiest and very effective meditation technique is 4-7-8: inhale for four seconds, hold the breath for seven, and exhale for eight. Repeat several times,' says this Delhi University graduate. We ask him for some practical tips, 'Try the 4-7-8 technique: inhale for four seconds, hold for seven, and exhale for eight. And repeat," says Kumar. "You know, one of the most common ailments, today, is anxiety. Anxiety is fear plus worry. Identify the cause, breathe deeply, meditate. If you need support, we're here — online or in person,' says Kumar with the poise of a yogi. Quickly then:Name a book that changed your life. There are many. However, M Scott Peck's The Road Less Travelled set me on a spiritual path. And then I read Deepak Chopra. I also read up a lot on cosmology and quantum physics even when I was a botany student. What is your go-to activity for relaxation?Meditation. What is that one habit that keeps you grounded?Meeting a lot of people and learning from their experiences. Bureaucracy or breathwork — what is harder to master? Definitely bureaucracy, it is very complex. What is a life mantra you want to share? Follow your passion no matter your age. Disclaimer: If you are feeling suicidal or have suicidal thoughts, please seek help immediately.

ABC Renews 9-1-1, The Rookie and 3 Others; Doctor Odyssey Fate TBD
ABC on Thursday revealed the fates of all but one of its scripted series. The network has renewed 9-1-1 (Season 9), Grey's Anatomy (Season 22), The Rookie (Season 8), Shifting Gears (Season 2) and Will Trent (Season 4). More from TVLine American Dad! Moving Back to Fox, Renewed for 4 Seasons Along With Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, Family Guy Did You Suspect The Rookie's April Fool's Day Episode Was One Big Prank? Grey's Anatomy Taps grown-ish Vet for a Possible Series-Regular Role They all will join previously renewed fan-favorites Abbott Elementary (Season 5) and High Potential (Season 2), and the forthcoming 9-1-1: Nashville (starring Chris O'Donnell), on ABC's 2025-26 primetime schedule. That leaves just one bubble show: Doctor Odyssey. The Joshua Jackson drama has been averaging 4.9 million weekly viewers, demonstrating just 77% retention out of 9-1-1 — only slightly better than what Grey's did in the 9 pm time slot last season. Sources tell TVLine that ABC remains engaged in creative conversations about a potential Season 2, and its fate will be decided at a later time. Out of the six dramas that ABC has aired this TV season, Will Trent ranks No. 2 in audience, trailing only the aforementioned freshman hit High Potential, averaging a hair over 7 million weekly viewers (with Live+7 playback). 9-1-1 ranks third, The Rookie is fourth and Grey's ranks last (behind Doctor Odyssey). Shifting Gears, meanwhile, is ABC's most-watched comedy (of three) thus far this TV season, and ranks No. 3 amongst all broadcast sitcoms, trailing only CBS' Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage and Ghosts.
