Staunton pool house demolition to begin Aug. 11
The existing pool house at Gypsy Hill Park was built in 1958 and is on its way out.
Beginning on Aug. 11, the existing pool house will be demolished and work will begin on a new building to take its place. The city estimates the new pool house is expected to be finished by May 2026, in time for opening day of the summer 2026 summer season.
"This is an exciting milestone for our community," said Parks and Recreation Director Chris Tuttle. "The new pool house will be completely accessible at ground level, making it easier for everyone, from young families to seniors to individuals with mobility challenges, to enjoy our community pool."
Lantz Construction of Rockingham County is taking on the project, which includes replacing the original pool house. The building has corroding steel joists, deteriorating exterior walls, and outdated fixtures that aren't in compliance with modern code standards.
According to a press release from Staunton, the new pool house will have:
Ground-level access with direct walkway to pool deck
Individual unisex restrooms providing enhanced privacy and security for families
Covered concession area and improved kitchen for better service
More storage space for pool equipment
Modern design meeting current building codes and accessibility standards
"Municipal pools like Gypsy Hill Park serve as vital community assets," said City Manager Leslie Beauregard. "They provide affordable recreation, host family celebrations, and offer adult lap swimming and water safety instruction. This investment allows these benefits to continue for generations to come."
The contract with Lantz totals $2,257,500.
