In dire need of a spark, D.C. United goes meekly in loss to Red Bulls

D.C. United performed with few ideas and little imagination Saturday night, a recurring theme for a team that has not scored an MLS goal in weeks and continues to drop points at Audi Field. Three days after a three-goal aberration in the U.S. Open Cup, United labored to sustain meaningless possession and barely threatened to score during a 2-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls before an announced sellout of 19,290. United (3-7-5) has gone 405 minutes without a goal in league play, and while the absence of injured star Christian Benteke is playing a big part in the scoring scarcity, the attack continues to show no creativity or punch, and Benteke's replacements haven't offered much. Saturday's best chance came early in the match, when striker Jacob Murrell failed to finish a one-on-one opportunity in the penalty area. United continued to show defensive improvement, but goals from Cameron Harper just before intermission and substitute Mohammed Sofo just before the final whistle made the difference for the Red Bulls (6-6-3), who avenged a 2-1 home loss to D.C. last month in Harrison, New Jersey. The Red Bulls were down two starting defenders serving yellow-card suspensions — Sean Nealis and Noah Eile — but it was United's defense under early duress. Luis Barraza, who has played well in goal since becoming the starter six weeks ago, made a one-on-one save on Emil Forsberg after United was caught in transition. Moments later, New York's Carlos Coronel matched Barraza's exploits, making a kick save on Murrell's clear threat. The Red Bulls went ahead in the 42nd minute, ending United's shutout streak in league play at 246 minutes. United's defense lost its shape after Garrison Tubbs's intercepted pass. Forsberg supplied Harper free on the right side for an angled eight-yarder that beat Barraza to the far corner. When the intermission whistle sounded, United had gone eight consecutive halves without a goal in MLS play. The last time D.C. scored was May 3 against the Colorado Rapids in first-half stoppage time — twice, in fact. D.C. Coach Troy Lesesne made two changes at halftime (Matti Peltola and Jackson Hopkins for Tubbs and Brandon Servania) and, with no improvements in the attack, two more in the 59th minute (Jared Stroud and Kristian Fletcher for Murrell and Hosei Kijima). Hopkins's night ended abruptly in the 72nd minute with an apparent groin injury — just weeks after he returned from a nine-month ankle injury. Gabriel Pirani, who missed five games with a knee ailment, entered. United's energy and urgency increased, but scoring chances remained few. Aaron Herrera crossed to Stroud alone eight yards from the target, but Stroud's header was meek. In stoppage time, Barraza made fabulous saves on consecutive shots before Sofo scored on a low attempt from 10 yards. That goal not only secured the victory but helped the Red Bulls retain the Atlantic Cup, the annual series between MLS founding members. New York has won it eight of the past nine seasons. Here's what else to know about United's loss: Benteke, United's top scorer who has missed two league matches and a U.S. Open Cup game with a sprained ankle, has yet to resume training but 'had a good week — a very good week,' Lesesne said. Lesesne said the team is targeting an absence of three to four weeks since the May 14 injury, which would probably keep the Belgian striker out until June 14 at Real Salt Lake. Dominique Badji, Benteke's backup, has resumed light training after straining a hamstring early this month. Center back Lukas MacNaughton (hamstring) is still not training, and midfielder Randall Leal (minor knee ailment) wasn't in uniform. Paul Pogba, the French superstar weighing his global options after completing a doping ban, on Friday posted video of himself training on his own in Miami, where he has a home. 'Let's get it,' he wrote. United has exchanged contract proposals with the former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder, The Washington Post reported last month. D.C. owns his MLS discovery rights, meaning no other team in the league is allowed to negotiate with him. European and Middle Eastern clubs were primed to reach out as well. United is bracing for several international call-ups that would affect the roster June 7 against Chicago. Unlike most first-division leagues, MLS does not usually pause the schedule for such windows. Peltola (Finland), Herrera (Guatemala), Fletcher (U.S. under-20s) and Kye Rowles (Australia) are the top candidates. Final decisions by their federations are expected this coming week. After joining the senior squad, Peltola is then expected to play at the under-21 European Championship in Slovakia. That tournament is not a mandatory release, but with Hopkins back from a long-term injury, D.C. would allow Peltola to go.

MLS Season Pass explained – cost, coverage and Leagues Cup games

Major League Soccer, or MLS, is marking its 30th anniversary this year. Even before the arrival of a certain World Cup winner, the top division of men's football (or soccer, if you prefer) in the US had been growing in popularity and global recognition. In addition to Inter Miami star Lionel Messi, the competition has also welcomed some well-known names from Premier League football over the years. David Beckham, Ashley Cole, Gareth Bale, Thierry Henry and Javier 'Chicarito' Hernández are also among those who've made the move in the past. Former Crystal Palace star Christian Benteke is now DC United's captain, while Phil Neville is head coach at the Portland Timbers. And former Liverpool and Barcelona star Javier Mascherano is now in charge of Inter Miami. While it may not have Premier League-style promotion and relegation (and the associated drama that comes with that), MLS awards the Supporters' Shield to the team with the best record overall from its 30 member clubs (San Diego FC are MLS newcomers this year). The bulk of the season (aka the 'regular season') is played in two geographically defined leagues, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. After that, a post-season playoff tournament takes place between the top nine teams from each Conference, culminating in the showpiece MLS Cup Final game. The league's international broadcast reach expanded with a major new rights deal that saw the launch of the MLS Season Pass at the start of the 2023 campaign, as part of a decade-long deal with global streaming partner Apple TV+. And you can even watch some games for free – here's how to tune in. Sign up for MLS Season Pass with Apple TV Apple is the primary global rights holder for all MLS coverage. The MLS Season Pass is the only way to watch every league match in a season, including the playoffs. It carries all matches live or on-demand, although some will still be broadcast on selected linear TV rights holders. The 2025 season has seen the introduction of a new flagship broadcast, Sunday Night Soccer, a full live broadcast of one featured game. UK night owls can catch these in the early hours of the morning, with most broadcasts starting at midnight. Apple also promises "no blackouts" by location, where TV coverage in a local market is effectively blocked. Although the FA does not allow live broadcasts of the Premier League and EFL's Saturday 3pm kick-offs, to encourage fans to go and watch their teams in person, this practice is more commonplace with sports events and leagues in the US, including the Indy 500, MLB and NBA. In the affected local US markets, the block on coverage is usually only lifted when the event sells out or is close to capacity. The MLS Season Pass monthly and annual prices vary, depending on where you are in the world and whether or not you're an existing Apple TV+ customer. It's a completely separate service from Apple TV+ itself, although being a subscriber does get you a discount on the MLS Season Pass. There's more on Apple TV+ and how it works here (and if you're already subscribed, why not check out our pick of the best Apple TV+ movies?) The price also comes down through the season. So if you're joining partway through, you won't have to pay the full subscription price, which sets it apart from some other sports streaming packages. at Apple TV+ Related: In the UK, the MLS Season Pass costs £12.99/month, or £59 for the remainder of the season if you're an Apple TV+ customer. If you aren't an Apple TV+ customer, you'll pay £14.99/month or £69 for the remainder of the season. Those in the US will pay $12.99/month or $59 for the rest of the season if they have Apple TV+. Customers without Apple TV+ will pay $14.99/month or $69 for the rest of the season. Customers can use Apple's iCloud Family Sharing function to share their MLS Season Pass with up to five family members. In terms of comprehensive coverage and a lack of local blackouts for customers in the US, as mentioned above – yes, it is. However, as with other similar products such as F1 TV, MLB TV or the NBA League Pass, the MLS Season Pass is really aimed at soccer devotees who want to watch for all or part of a season and enjoy comprehensive, in-depth coverage of all things MLS. If you don't know if the MLS is for you, we'd advise you to try out some of Apple's free coverage of the league to see if you like it. Those of you in the UK might need to stay up late for some of the upcoming free games, though. Additionally, Apple TV+ subscribers will be able to watch Sunday Night Soccer games at no extra cost. The MLS Season Pass also includes access to coverage of the Leagues Cup, an annual mid-season competition open to all clubs from the MLS and Mexico's top division of men's football, Liga MX. Other competitions featured in the MLS Season Pass include the MLS Cup Playoffs and Campeones Cup games. Customers can also enjoy selected matches from MLS Next Pro, which sits at the third tier of the US men's soccer pyramid, and youth league MLS Next. MLS Season Pass subscribers can also enjoy regular Match of the Day-style highlights programming and wrap-up shows in English or Spanish. The MLS team also offers a programme called MLS 360, described as a "whip round" show in the vein of Soccer Saturday, and it launched a Spanish-language version in 2024 hosted by Tony Cherchi. Commentary is also available in English or Spanish and, where Canadian teams are in action, in French. In 2023, a 30-day free trial of the MLS Season Pass was made available to new and qualified returning subscribers who were happy to at least commit to a monthly subscription plan, had an Apple ID, and a valid payment method on file. There isn't a free trial running as of May 2025. However, Apple TV+ members can watch the flagship Sunday Night Football broadcast at no extra cost each week, and those of you who aren't Apple TV+ subscribers can sample several games for no charge. Some review and analysis content is also available for no additional cost, to try and encourage you to take out a subscription. at EE£328.00 at at Audible at at £49.99 at at at at Amazon at Amazon at at at at at at at at EE at at at at at Game at Pandora at at EE at at at at Sky Mobile at at Pandora at at at at at at Game at Three at at at at at AO at at at at at at £39.99 at at Fitbit$15.00 at at at at at John Lewis£119.00 at at at at at at at at at at at at at Amazon£157.00 at John Lewis at at at John Lewis & Partners at at at at at at at at Amazon at Three at at John Lewis & Partners at at at at at Fitbit£15.99 at Amazon£119.99 at at at at at at at Three£699.00 at at at at Apple£49.99 at Amazon£189.99 at at at at Audible at EE at at at at at at at at John Lewis at at at at at at at at EE at at Apple at at £449.00 at John Lewis£32.99 at Amazon at at at at Samsung at at Microsoft£229.00 at John Lewis at at at at Three at Apple at at at John Lewis at at AO at crunchyroll£79.00 at Samsung£79.98 at at Amazon at at at Microsoft at at at Microsoft at at John Lewis & Partners£79.98 at at at at Amazon£369.00 at John Lewis at at at at at now at John Lewis & Partners at at at at at Microsoft at at John Lewis at at at £6.65 at at at at at at at at at at at at at at at at at at at at at You Might Also Like PS5 consoles for sale – PlayStation 5 stock and restocks: Where to buy PS5 today?
