Barge runs aground in Catanduanes amid rough seas

A barge with three crew members on board ran aground at the shoreline of Catanduanes due to rough seas, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported Saturday. According a report by Christian Maño on Super Radyo dzBB, the PCG said the barge was anchored at sea when strong waves started pounding the vessel. Coast guard personnel have been deployed to the area to assess the barge's condition. Initial investigation showed that the incident did not cause an oil spill or environmental pollution. Onsite photos show that the cargo ship bore the name Premium Portland-2. In a Facebook post, the PCG said inclement weather on July 18 caused the barge's anchor line to break. The vessel then started to drift "uncontrollably." The effects of Tropical Storm Crising and the southwest monsoon or habagat have been causing heavy rains these past days. According to the 5 a.m. bulletin of weather service PAGASA, the southwest monsoon was expected to bring heavy rains over the Bicol Region, including Catanduanes. Sea travel was assessed as "risky for all types or tonnage of vessels." Seafarers were advised to stay at port, or seek safe harbor until waves and winds subside. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Meanwhile, the water level at Tenejeros Bridge was at 11.8 meters while that of C4 Bridge was at a critical level of 12.5 meters on Saturday morning. Parts of NBBS Kaunlaran, SIPAC, San Jose, Daanghari, San Roque, and Tanza 1 and 2 were flooded as of 8:15 a.m., according to the Malabon Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. In Manila, among the flooded areas were Padre Faura going to UN Avenue LRT station, Padre Faura intersection, Taft Avenue in front of National Bureau of Investigation, España Boulevard portions from M. Dela Fuente, Maceda, Blumentritt to Antipolo Street, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said, according to a report by Christian Maño on Super Radyo dzBB. The floods in these areas were gutter-deep and passable to all motor vehicles. Motorists however, tried to avoid going through the flooded areas to avoid having their vehicles stalled. Some commuters along Taft Avenue and España Boulevard were thus stranded due to the lesser number of public transport vehicles on the said roads. —KG, GMA Integrated News

MMDA: Used campaign paraphernalia donated to BJMP for recycling

Campaign materials used during Eleksyon 2025 will be donated to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) for recycling, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said Saturday. The used campaign material will be used for reproduction as saleable items for the benefit of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). Christian Maño of Super Radyo DZBB reported on Dobol B TV that MMDA personnel have been collecting campaign paraphernalia in Metro Manila after Eleksyon 2025. In an ambush interview, MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes said the agency will donate the collected materials to the BJMP for reproduction as tote bags and other profitable goods of PDLs. Earlier in the week, the MMDA reported that around 10,100 kilograms, or 11.18 tons, of campaign materials in the National Capital Region were removed on the first day of cleanup after the May 2025 midterm elections. In its report, the MMDA said 23,452 pieces of campaign materials were collected in 16 cities and one town in the region. Most of the removed campaign posters were from Manila, with 4.05 tons, followed by Muntinlupa with 1.66 tons and Districts II, V, and VI in Quezon City with 1.27 tons. --Jamil Santos/ VAL, GMA Integrated News For more Eleksyon 2025 related content and updates, visit GMA News Online's Eleksyon 2025 microsite.
