Kevin Costner felt like a ‘dumbbell' in school before finding his passion
Print Close By Janelle Ash, Larry Fink Published May 21, 2025 Kevin Costner's parenting style is leading by example. While promoting his latest project, starring in the History Channel's new series "The West," Costner admitted he considered himself a "dumbbell" growing up, but he didn't let that stop him from chasing his passion, like American history and the West. "I don't know, the advice thing, I'd like them to see how I do my work. I take it seriously. I'm a public school guy. I was often not at the wrong end of the bell curve. There was too much math, and there was not enough history. And I was made to feel like a dumbbell," Costner said. "Because if you don't do well in that thing, you're a dumbbell. So, I always thought I was a daydreamer. I think I don't know what advice I give them, other than I hope they can find that yellow brick road, you know, to land on it and have the courage to go forward and don't let the economics drive their decisions in their lives. Find what they love," Costner said. YELLOWSTONE TO YOSEMITE: KEVIN COSTNER TELLS THE 'STRANGER THAN FICTION' STORY OF TAMING THE AMERICAN FRONTIER Costner is a father of seven. Baumgartner, a designer, filed for divorce from Costner in May 2023 after 18 years of marriage. During his interview with Fox News Digital, Costner teased that he gives in to his kids often, so he lets his dog Bob do the same. "Bob just stands there with a dish in his mouth. He's like that. So, it's like I can deal with him. I can shame him," Costner said. "I can't shame my kids who want the keys to the car. I can't shame them that their social schedule is more important than mine. Costner has been keeping busy and over the past weekend, he was spotted enjoying a night out at a club called Raspoutine in West Hollywood on Saturday. He could be seen talking to a mysterious young brunette as they were surrounded by a large crowd underneath the hue of red lights. However, the star later left the venue with the club's owner Alexander Ghislain rather than the woman who he was spotted with inside. Last month in April, Kevin was also spotted with a different mystery woman as the pair grabbed lunch. But a source soon informed Page Six that she was simply his assistant who has been working for the Hollywood actor for two years. Costner has stepped back into the dating scene after his split from Christine Baumgartner - whom he was married to from 2004 until their divorce was finalized in 2024. The source stated that he 'is in a good place' and is 'having fun with his family and friends. 'He is not seriously involved with anyone and not necessarily looking for anything more than that right now.' The insider also shared, 'Kevin is cool, real and in some ways old-school in his thinking. He has a lot of interests and loves being busy when he is in that mode.' After the end of his marriage to Christine, a separate source told that Costner has been 'leaning on' his first wife Cindy Silva. The pair were married from 1978 through 1994 - and also share three children. Cindy was awarded $80 million in their divorce settlement. 'Kevin and Cindy have stayed close friends and she has been guiding him in recent months over his heartbreak from Christine as she is a wise woman.' The insider added, 'He really appreciates that their sad split has led to such a beautiful friendship. She is an ally and offers great advice. He leans on her quite often.' The two still 'get together for the kids birthdays and are able to spend quality time together. It's all very amicable and friendly.'

Kevin Costner is showing no signs of slowing down his love life at 70 after recently partying with young brunette
is said to be enjoying himself as a single man at the age of 70 and 'playing the field'. The actor was recently videoed cozying up to a woman many years his junior at trendy West Hollywood nightclub, Raspoutine, over the weekend. And understands the Hollywood veteran is relishing his status as a single man - and is fending off more women than ever. A source said: 'Every week it is another speculation that Kevin has found the one... but he isn't looking for the one. 'He won't find another Christine Baumgartner [his ex-wife], but he does have lots of options to occupy his time. 'Kevin gets hit on everywhere he goes and this is no different. He has lots of women who are vying for his time and attention. He is playing the field and loving every second of it.' One onlooker told that Kevin and the mystery lady chatted for nearly an hour before they went their separate ways. They said: 'The vibe of Raspoutine is really chill... he was definitely enjoying himself. He was friendly with everyone, but especially her. 'There was a lot of touching - shoulders, hands, arms. They were feeling each other.' At one point, Kevin is said to have ordered a specialty cocktail for the woman, and they chatted and laughed on a velvet couch while they drank. While he might be playing the field, it seems he's also still licking his wounds from his contentious split from ex-wife Christine. The insider added: 'He already found [the one] once and that is over. She broke his heart, and he is not looking for love.'
