Canada Day festivities happening outside of downtown
For those looking to avoid the downtown Canada Day crowds, there is lots planned in the suburbs. CTV's Camille Wilson reports. While the main Canada Day celebrations will take place in the downtown core, there will be lots happening in other parts of the city. Barrhaven, Kanata and Orléans are all on the list of some of the biggest shows in the city. Kanata's festivities will be held at Walter Baker Park starting at 10:00 a.m. with a Canada Day Carnival running all day, 33 local businesses and a fireworks show at 10:00 p.m. 'Lots of activities for the families. We're going to have everything from bouncy castles for the kids, to the rides. We've got something I'm really proud of – the local marketplace, which will be all local businesses,' said Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley. The fireworks show is a one of the most popular parts of the day for families in Kanata. 'There's always a big show at night. We expect anywhere from 30,00 to 40,000 people to be on the hill,' said Hubley. Christine Smith is visiting her daughter and grandchildren from the U.K. and says she's looking forward to spending Canada Day with her family at Walter Baker Park. 'The first time I've been to this part for Canada Day. It'll just be interesting to see what we can find,' said Smith. Kanata resident Taryn Sommerville adds, 'I've lived in Kanata my whole life and every year we come to the fireworks here. We bring grandma and grandpa and all the cousins and we watch the fireworks. We just love it.' Barrhaven will also be hosting Canada Day festivities at Clarke Fields starting at 9 a.m. with a Midway carnival, live music and a 50/50 draw where you could win up to $10,000. 'Our food trucks will all be open. We've got 13 of them here this year. We've got a kids zone with all kinds of free games for the kids to play,' said Darrell Bartraw, president of Canada Day Barrhaven. There will be no parking on site but there will be shuttle busses running from the Independent grocer and Heart & Crown. The midway in Barrhaven will run until July 6. Orléans will be hosting Canada Day celebrations at Petrie Island. There will be a Children's Zone, land and river competitions, beach volleyball, an Ottawa Fire Services demonstration and more. There will be fireworks at 10 p.m. on the East Beach.

N Ireland motorcyclist, war veteran and public inquiry chairwoman honoured
One of the world's most renowned road racers, an astrophysicist and the first woman to chair a public inquiry in Northern Ireland are among those being honoured by the King in his birthday honours. The region also has the oldest person to be honoured on the list, with 106-year-old Second World War veteran Norman Irwin, from Coleraine, in line for a British Empire Medal (BEM). Dozens of people from Northern Ireland have been recognised, including former permanent secretary at the Department of Health Peter May with the Order of the Bath for public service, and Michael Dunlop, 36, being made an MBE for services to motorcycle racing. From starting his racing journey as one of the famous Dunlop family dynasty of Ballymoney, Co Antrim, in 2006, Michael has gone on to become the most successful rider in the history of the Isle of Man TT, with 32 wins, and has overall won more than 120 national road races. He said: 'I've spent years pushing through every high and low life could throw at me. No matter the challenge, I've always given everything 100% on and off the track. 'To now be recognised in this way is a privilege beyond words.' Astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, 81, originally from Lurgan, Co Armagh, who as a doctoral student discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967, is to be made a Companion of Honour, and Christine Smith KC, from Co Down, chairwoman of the Urology Services Inquiry, is being made a CBE. Ms Smith said she is 'deeply honoured'. 'I feel privileged to be the recipient as the first woman to chair a public inquiry in Northern Ireland,' she said. 'I see it as a recognition of the incredible mentors and champions I have had throughout my career, and I am most grateful for their support. 'I also see it as a reflection of the collective effort of my team on the Urology Services Inquiry (USI,) and those I have been lucky to work with on previous inquiries, including the Independent Neurology Inquiry (INI), the Renewable Heat Incentive Inquiry (RHI) and in particular the Inquiry into Historical Institutional Abuse (HIA).' Meanwhile, Richard Taylor, governor of Hydebank Wood Secure College and Women's Prison, is being made an OBE for public service. Mr Taylor credited the whole team of staff for being part of a 10-year process of turning the south Belfast facility around, following a critical inspection report in 2013, to being described as a 'model of excellence'.

2025 Central Texas ‘Remarkable Woman' Winner Revealed
WACO, TX (FOX 44) — The founder and executive director of a Waco nonprofit is our Central Texas Remarkable Woman of the Year! Inez Russell started Friends For Life, a nonprofit that helps older and disabled adults live their best lives independently and safely. She started the charity in September of 1989. Since then, Friends For Life has expanded to 82 Central Texas counties. On April 1, FOX 44 showed you the exact moment Inez learned she had won the 2025 Central Texas Remarkable Woman of the Year award — as well as her reaction, and several close friends' reactions, as well as the FOX 44 family's reaction. We also caught up with Inez and Christine Smith, the woman who nominated Inez, for a conversation about being the winner of the 2025 contest. 'I'm just really stunned. And now that has had a few moments to sink in,' Inez said. 'Well, I'm a really very grateful. I don't feel like I deserve it. I think everything that's happened, Friends for Life was God. And I've been blessed to get to follow Him and do what I feel He's called me to do.'Christine Smith told FOX 44 she moved across the nation to volunteer for Inez and Friends for Life, and jumped at the chance to nominate Inez to be the 2025 Central Texas Remarkable Woman of the Year. 'I am so grateful that I heard about it when I did that. I could finish it in such a short amount of time, because it just poured out,' Christine said. 'I knew that I was feeling drawn to move to Waco, and I already had a history with elderly, with people with challenges and coming alongside them. And I met a lady who was bringing in coffee and kolaches. Turned out she was the keynote speaker, as well. I reached over to my husband and I said, 'Now I know the reason why I'm moving to Waco so that I get to volunteer with her organization.' She was she was the reason. Friends for Life was the reason.' Part of winning the Central Texas Remarkable Woman of the Year is a $1,000 donation from the Nexstar Charitable Foundation for the nonprofit of her choice. She's also eligible for the National Woman of the Year, and will travel to Hollywood as well – where she'll be among other Nexstar station's Remarkable Women winners. The National Woman of the Year will be revealed on April 14. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
