Deterrence must be the priority of Canada's expanded Armed Forces spending
By Alex Wilner and Christopher Gates Contributors Alex Wilner is a professor at Carleton University and co-director of Triple Helix. He was a member of the 2025 Canadian Academic Delegation to Taiwan. LGen (ret'd) Christopher Coates is director of foreign policy, national defence and national security at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. He was a participant at the 2025 Transatlantic Roundtable with NATO allies in Brussels. As Prime Minister Mark Carney tackles his pledge to raise Canada's defence spending to 5 per cent of GDP by 2035, Ottawa should frame this spending around a key goal: deterrence. Large sums of money are set to flow in order to meet this target — an estimated $150 billion a year once the goal is fully met. As spending ramps up, a focus on deterrence could guide how the government directs these investments and the way that it explains them to Canadians. This would offer a more compelling and constructive frame that meets the geopolitical realities of this moment, rather than merely spending the cash to placate our allies. Report: Vikings to have joint practices with AFC East team during preseason
Report: Vikings to have joint practices with AFC East team during preseason Joint practices have become one of the more useful tools in recent years during the preseason. When the league reduced one preseason on the schedule, it turned to joint practices to get better looks at veterans and rookies on its rosters. For the Vikings, they already have confirmed reports from Christopher Gates of the Daily Norseman that they will have joint practices with the New England Patriots. The two teams will faceoff in Week 2 of the preseason so they will be facing off all week leading up to the game. For the Vikings, it will allow them to have what should be expected to be physical practices due to the Patriots new head coach Mike Vrabel running things. Some notable players to watch during the practices will include Patriots top draft pick Will Campbell and how he handles the Vikings pass rushers, as well as Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. Also returning to Minnesota will be recently signed Stefon Diggs, whether he practices at that point having torn his ACL in 2024 is yet to be seen. No matter what, there is a lot to be gained for the Vikings early on in the preseason thanks to these joint practices.

Interstate traffic stops lead to drug charges
Mt. Juliet Police arrested several individuals Wednesday on drug charges and one on probation violation. Officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle speeding on Interstate 40, and discovered the driver, Chiquita Thornton, 43, of Nashville was wanted in Wilson County for probation violation related to joyriding. The passenger, Christopher Gates, 22, of Nashville was found in possession of a handgun and drugs. Police say they found ecstasy and cocaine, which they believe was intended for resale. 'Ironically, they were on their way to bond a family member out of jail for burglary,' MJPD said. In a separate traffic stop on a vehicle for violating the Slow Poke Law, or driving too slow in the far left lane, police found more than one pound of suspected methamphetamine hidden under a seat and on a passenger. Robert McCray, 41, of Knoxville was arrested for possession of meth with intent to sell. He also was given an additional charge of bringing contraband into jail. Another occupant, Kenneisha Carter-Hudson, 36, also of Knoxville, was charged with conspiracy to sell meth.
