Hundreds pay tribute to fallen Virginia Beach officers
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Down South Witchduck Road, hundreds of people stopped and honored the two fallen Virginia Beach officers, Christopher Reese and Cameron Girvin, one last time. From the air, Drone 10 captured dozens of police vehicles and motorcycles escorting Girvin and Reese. On the ground, people lined the streets to say one final goodbye. 'Well, she asked me a question a minute ago. She says, 'Dad, I don't know them.' I told her, 'That's right. They don't know you either, but they still defend you and protect you and our neighbors. So, it's good to show them our support,'' said Forest Hickman, who watched the procession with his daughter, Wren. From watching out of the sunroofs of cars to others paying their respects, traffic stopped to remember the two Virginia Beach police officers. 'We might not know them, just like a lot of the officers who came down here might not have had a personal experience with them. We are all affected when something affects our community, no matter who it is,' said Matthew Morris, VP of US Flag Runners. More than 350 flags were blowing in the wind down South Witchduck Road. U.S. Flag Runners says all of them were set up Saturday morning before the funeral. 'They put their lives on the line for our communities every day. Why can't we show them a little bit of respect and a little bit of honor? Let [the] family know that we care,' said Joseph Bain, President of US Flag Runners. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Virginia Beach police officer from New Jersey shot, killed making traffic stop honored in hometown
While standing outside his home, George Reese said the past few days have been an emotional roller coaster. "This is the hardest thing I've gone through in my life," he said. George Reese couldn't help but smile when describing his son, Christopher Reese, who followed in his footsteps and pursued a career in law enforcement. "I can't even begin to tell you how proud I am. He had goals, and I think he would have attained them," he said. Christopher Reese became an officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department in 2022. The 30-year-old got married only four months ago. "It's sad, it's sad. I know he had dreams of being a father but he'll never get that opportunity now, it's unfair," George Reese said. Christopher Reese graduated from Sterling High School in Somerdale, Camden County. After college, he stayed in Virginia. On Friday night, Christopher Reese and his partner, Cameron Girvin, were both shot and killed in Virgina Beach while attempting to make a traffic stop. It's a scenario George Reese says he can't get out of his mind. He's a retired officer in Camden. "It's hard because I've seen it, I've witnessed it, I've done it. So I know how bad things can get in a matter of a second," he said. Christopher Reese is being called a hero, and his father says he always wanted to help people. "He always had a smile on his face. I think it was embedded. It was just permanent, the kid was always smiling and just a great kid," he said. To remember his life of service, the mayor of Somerdale, George Badey, ordered all flags in the borough to be flown at half-staff in Christopher Reese's honor. "I felt like it was the right thing to do to let the family know [in] someway shape or form that we are thinking of them and praying for them," Badey said. George Reese also lowered the American flag outside his home, and says he is forever proud of what his son accomplished in his young life. "We're going to remember him just by talking about him and telling his stories and we will keep his memory alive in our hearts," said George Reese, who added his family will travel to Virginia later this week to celebrate Christopher Reese's life.

Community steps up in support of fallen VB officers' families
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach community has stepped up to support the families of two Virginia Beach Police officers who were killed in the line of duty Friday night. Two VBPD officers killed in the line of duty Friday night Officers Cameron Girvin, 25, and Christopher Reese, 30, died after both were shot during a traffic stop. 'It brought back a lot of bad memories,' said former Virginia Beach Police Chief Jake Jacocks, who now heads the Virginia Beach Police Foundation, now the center for donations for the tragedy that has befallen our community. 'I lost two officers during my tenure as chief, and it's a life changing experience for everyone that goes through it.' One of the first donations was a pledge of $50,000 from TowneBank. 'I presented funds to one of the families yesterday and told her this was the initial contribution to them to help with those immediate, unexpected needs they may face,' Jacocks said. 'I also told them it wasn't the end, and that there was more where that came from, and encouraged her to reach out as funds were needed and we were in a position to help.' 'Evil found them, it was totally evil,' Virginia Beach Vice Mayor Rosemary Wilson said, but says the community's core of caring is far and wide. 'In honor of these two heroes, and on the day of the service, all the flags will be at half staff, and Congresswoman [Jen] Kiggans is also going to have a flag flown over our U.S. Capitol building in their honor.' John Zirkle with the Virginia Beach Hotel Association said it is providing free rooms for family and friends. 'Any families coming in from out of town, friends of the officers, we are more than happy to help them,' Zirkle said. 'They have enough going on that they don't have to pay for hotel rooms.' Martha Davenport, executive director of the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association, said that 'we reached out to our restaurant association, and in the first three hours we were able to cover the three shifts at each precinct to include the detective bureau.' Fifteen restaurants answered the call. GoFundMe pages have also been set up for both Girvin and Reese. 'I just want to make sure the information about the GoFundMe pages gets out. They are important.' Said Wilson: 'The devastation to these families, is felt by our law enforcement and public safety community and our city community.' Girvin was to be a dad later this year, and Christopher Reese their families assured a community stands with them. Jacocks, who lost two officers during his tenure as chief, reminded the families support will continue. Said Zirkle: 'Virginia Beach is a hospitality community. This is a community that comes together and understands there is a time and place for everything, and now is the right time to make sure we take care of our own.' To order restaurant gift certificates for the families, you can go here. 'Click on the gift cards,' Zirkle said. 'They can purchase those gift cards when online or [they can] go to the restaurant in person, and they can drop them off at our office.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
