Cullman man arrested after high-speed chase, foot pursuit in Decatur park
Apr. 9—A Cullman man was arrested in Decatur on Friday after fleeing from police officers in his vehicle — with his teenage son inside — and later on foot through Austinville Park, according to a police affidavit.
Christopher Wayne Lynn, 39, faces 11 charges including unlawful possession of a controlled substance, third-degree domestic violence, and attempting to elude a police officer. After the arrest, he was transported to Morgan County Jail and held in lieu of a $7,300 bond, according to jail records, and remained in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.
According to the affidavit, a Decatur police officer noticed Lynn driving a silver Volkswagen Gold with no tag and improper headlights.
"Upon initiating a vehicle stop near Corrine Avenue and Austinville Road Southwest, the vehicle continued eastbound before entering the parking lot of 108 14th Street Southwest," the affidavit said. "The vehicle then went off road in between two businesses, breaking through a wooden fence before reentering Austinville Road."
The affidavit said Lynn ran two red lights and reached speeds of up to 70 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone.
"The pursuit ended with Lynn's vehicle (becoming) disabled at Austinville Park after causing property damage," the affidavit said. "Lynn fled the scene of the accident before being placed under arrest."
The affidavit said after a brief foot chase through Austinville Park, police apprehended Lynn and three bags of synthetic marijuana, or spice, were found near where he wrecked and an additional four bags were found on 14th Street Southwest. The bags weighed a total of 10 grams.
Lynn's 17-year-old son was with him in the vehicle during the police chase and when he wrecked, according to the affidavit.
Lynn in 2019 pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery in connection with an armed robbery of the CVS Pharmacy on Beltline Road, according to court records. He was sentenced to five years in prison followed by five years of probation. His probation was at one time revoked when he allegedly got drunk and assaulted his father and juvenile son at a campground in Tennessee.
