Is Chrysler's Legendary Hemi Making a Comeback?
The third generation of the famed Chrysler Hemi made its way to public roadways in 2003.
Currently, the Hemi exists in Ram Heavy Duty products, the Wrangler 392, and the Dodge Durango.
Speculation of a Hemi revival comes after the departure of , the former CEO of Stellantis.
Just when you thought the Hemi was dead, it might be making (another) return. The storied Chrysler Hemi has had its fair share of fits and starts, and it seems to be skirting its latest trip to the history books.
According to Mopar Insiders, sources are pointing toward the current Hemi V8 going back online with its full portfolio of engines. That would include the 5.7-liter and 6.4-liter Hemis, as well as the 6.2-liter Hellcat.
Mopar Insiders also reports that the revitalized Hemi is slated for production at the Stellantis factory in Dundee, Michigan. The Hemi was formerly manufactured at the Saltillo, Mexico, engine factory, which currently produces the Hurricane six-cylinder engine family (GME-T6).
Now, like any speculation surrounding a massive pivot across effectively the entire North American arm of Stellantis, this should be taken with a grain of salt. Sportsnaut reported that Ram might make a push for the NASCAR Truck series, and the enthusiast site included a screenshot of an email with dealers claiming the return of the Hemi V8 into Ram 1500 pickups.
If Stellantis does bring the Hemi back en masse, there is the question of what it will power, and what would happen to the Hurricane I6. Judging from these reports, it appears Ram is the main target for V8 power, and it wouldn't be a huge surprise if the Hurricane was moved out of the truck engine bay.
Pushing the Hemi back into the Charger seems like it would be a bigger leap, but Dodge has managed to stuff a Hemi in engine bays that once seemed unlikely recipients.
This is still just speculation, so don't run to your local Ram store to put a deposit on a new Ram 1500 TRX. That said, if you see an advertisement for a Hemi-powered Ram truck in the near future, you aren't dreaming.
