New show to explore Pacific voices, culture
Iree Chow hosts Pacifically Speaking on OAR FM. PHOTO: SUPPLIED Pacific communities in Dunedin can expect to hear more of their own stories on-air and online, thanks to the efforts of local woman Iree Chow. Ms Chow launches her radio show and podcast Pacifically Speaking on OAR FM today. A "proud Chuukese" from the Federated States of Micronesia and Chinese Solomon Islander, she relocated to Dunedin with her husband in 2023. After contributing to the radio station's coverage of Solomon Islands Language Week last year, Ms Chow saw the opportunity to develop a show that considered the wider experience of communities of Pacific people in Dunedin. "I really hope we can explore the vibrant diversity of the Pacific through personal narratives, cultural insights and conversations that uplift Pacific voices. "I'm really excited to platform some of communities we often don't get to hear from, across Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia. They have such powerful stories," Ms Chow said. She hopes the programme will appeal to anyone wishing to learn about other cultures, including those with a shared experience of relocating to Dunedin from other countries. Pacifically Speaking is broadcast on Thursdays at 9am on 105.4FM and 1575AM. Podcasts are available from and other major platforms. Southwest Missouri couple will go to trial on child abuse case
PINEVILLE – An Anderson couple accused of child abuse was held over for trial. Dickler Joseph, 38, and his wife Tokiko Liwis, 23, appeared in McDonald County Circuit Court on Wednesday for their preliminary hearing on a charge of abuse or neglect of a child, a class B felony. A 2-year-old emaciated girl in the couple's care was hospitalized on Aug. 18 with several injuries, including malnourishment, multiple fractures and injuries in various states of healing, and a brain bleed, court documents show. Three witnesses testified during the preliminary hearing: an Anderson police officer, a Mercy Hospital physician, and an investigator from children's services. When law enforcement officials arrived at the Joseph residence, they found the child 'unconscious with labored breathing,' according to an arrest affidavit. Joseph reported that he and Liwis, his wife, had been caring for the 2-year-old child and her 4-year-old brother since December 2023. He provided notarized guardianship papers and a birth certificate, showing that the natural mother consented to the two children being in the couple's custody. The child is now in state custody. There is no word on the toddler's current condition. The couple speak Chuukese and require an interpreter. Chuukese is the language of the Federated States of Micronesia. They are out on a $10,000 surety bond, each. The next court date has not yet been set. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
