Ukraine said its drones hit a Russian research and production facility that supplies components for missiles, as Russia unleashed a fresh barrage of air attacks overnight. Two Ukrainian drones struck the site of an electronics developer and manufacturer in Cheboksary, which temporarily halted operations to protect employees, Oleg Nikolayev, governor of Russia's Chuvashia region that's located 1,300 km (800 miles) from the border with Ukraine, said in a Telegram post.

A Ukrainian drone strike, among the deepest into Russia in more than three years of the war, forced a temporary suspension of production at an electronics company in the Volga river region of Chuvashia, the head of the region said on Monday. The strike, some 1,300 km (800 miles) from the border with Ukraine, caused no casualties, Chuvashia Governor Oleg Nikolayev said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app. But 'the responsible decision was made to temporarily suspend production to ensure the safety of employees' of the VNIIR enterprise where the drones fell, Nikolayev said. It was not immediately clear whether the drones caused any damage. Nikolayev said that another drone fell onto some fields in the area of the capital of the region, Cheboksary. Ukraine's military said in a Telegram statement on Monday that 'at least two drones' hit the VNIIR facility that specializes in manufacturing navigation equipment used in attack drones, guided aerial bombs and high-precision weapons. The Ukrainian military said the drone attack sparked a large -scale fire at the VNIIR plant. Reuters could not independently verify the reports about the attack. The Russian defense ministry - which reports only how many drones were destroyed not how many Ukraine launched - said on Telegram that its units downed two drones over Chuvashia. In total, it said, air defense systems destroyed 49 Ukrainian drones overnight over Russia. Kyiv has often said that its attacks inside Russia are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Moscow's war efforts and are in response to the continued Russian strikes on Ukraine. The VNIIR Russian Scientific Research Design and Technological Institute of Relay Engineering with experimental production in Chuvashia is on the US sanctions list, according to the US Treasury website. A Ukrainian drone attack on the Voronezh region that borders Ukraine damaged a gas pipeline, cutting off gas supplies to 22 clients, the region's governor, Alexander Gusev, said on the Telegram.

Drone attack ignites blaze in Russia's Chuvashia Republic, media reports

Explosions and massive fires followed a drone attack on the Russian city of Cheboksary in the Chuvashia Republic, Russian Telegram news channels reported in the early hours of June 9. Ukrainian drones allegedly targeted an oil depot in Cheboksary in a previous attack in March. In video footage from local residents purporting to show the June 9 strike, smoke and flames can be seen rising over the city of Cheboksary. One video, published by the Russian independent news outlet Astra, shows a drone approaching the target and making impact, causing another explosion. 0:00 / 1× Russian officials have not yet commented on the alleged attack and the Kyiv Independent could not verify the claims. Overnight drone strikes in Russia reportedly triggered flight restrictions at airports in Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, and Tambov. Ukraine reportedly attacked the Burevestnik oil refinery in Cheboksary on March 9, in its first reported drone attack against the Chuvashia Republic. The refinery lies over 900 kilometers (559 miles) from the Ukrainian border. Since 2022, Kyiv has launched repeated attacks against Russian refineries, which Ukraine considers to be valid military targets. In recent days, Ukraine has launched a number of strikes against military facilities in Russia, including missile bases and airfields.
