Long Thanh airport must receive first flight by end-2025: Vietnam PM
DONG NAI, Vietnam: Prime Minister Phm Minh Chính on Saturday (Aug 2) reiterated that Long Thanh International Airport must be completed to receive its first flight on December 19, 2025 and begin commercial operations in early 2026. Inspecting the airport construction in the southern province of Dong Nai, the leader praised efforts to accelerate progress but warned that the remaining tasks are complex and time is running out. He, therefore, asked all stakeholders to revise the schedule and ensure clear assignment of tasks. 'It is a must to coordinate more tightly and efficiently, mobilise additional manpower and equipment and fully engage main contractors, subcontractors, as well as police and military forces to speed up work wherever possible,' he said. The PM also urged monitoring, alongside construction progress, to ensure quality, workplace safety, technical and aesthetic standards, environmental hygiene and worker well-being. Apart from the airport, connecting roads, telecom, power, and water infrastructure, landscaping and environmental works, and service zones, he also called for studies to develop an airport city, aviation industrial park, free trade zone, and logistics hub around the site. PM Chính emphasised the airport's vital role in driving socio-economic development, generating jobs, and improving livelihoods. He described the project as a new symbol of progress, not only for the South-East region but for the entire country. He requested preparations to ensure the effective management and operation of the airport, while directing relevant sides to prepare for the construction of Runway 3 and Phase 2 of the project. This marks his eighth on-site inspection of the Long Thanh International Airport project, a 5,000ha development with a total investment of VND336 trillion (US$12.84 billion), aimed at easing congestion at Ho Chí Minh City's overstretched Tan Son Nhat Airport. Regarding delays in several bidding packages due to material shortages, site clearance issues, overlapping construction and heavy workloads, PM Chính asked the investor to step up oversight, maximise manpower and equipment, and resolve bottlenecks to keep the overall project on schedule. - Vietnam News/ANN

Vietnamese PM Chinh calls for breakthroughs in Vietnam–UK economic cooperation
HANOI: Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has called on Vietnam and the UK, especially their business communities, to make the most of the UK–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) to advance bilateral ties in a more substantive and effective manner. Strengthened cooperation, he noted, will contribute not only to the development of each country but also to regional and global peace, cooperation, and progress. Speaking at a meeting in Hanoi on Saturday (June 28) with the UK business community and enterprises operating in Vietnam, the PM laid out a vision for long-term cooperation in key sectors aligned with Vietnam's newly issued 'four strategic pillars'. He reflected on the strong foundations of Vietnam–UK relations, especially in trade and investment, and stressed the need for greater efforts to elevate economic collaboration to match the two countries' friendship, potential and complementarity. Setting a target of US$10 billion in two-way trade and calling for a similar level of direct and indirect UK investments in Vietnam, the PM proposed six priority areas for breakthrough cooperation. He urged both sides to enhance connectivity between the two economies in a way that is effective, substantive, and mutually beneficial. He called for stronger collaboration in science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation to capitalise on the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Chính emphasised the importance of working together on green transition, climate change response, and Vietnam's goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. The Government leader encouraged expanded cooperation in healthcare, education, culture and sports, particularly support for Vietnam's ambition to make English a second language in its schools. He welcomed UK involvement in developing Vietnam's financial services sector, including the establishment of international financial and commercial centres. In addition, he expressed his hope that UK businesses will help Vietnamese companies join global production, supply, and distribution chains and assist in nurturing domestic tech unicorns. He affirmed the Government's commitment to maintaining a business environment aligned with international practices and the laws of both countries. This includes safeguarding the rights and legitimate interests of foreign nationals and businesses in Vietnam, creating long-term, stable policies, ensuring freedom of enterprise, property rights, fair competition, and maintaining political stability, security and safety. He reiterated the Government's willingness to listen, understand, and work with investors to resolve any difficulties in the spirit of harmonised benefits and shared risks. Emphasising the need for intelligence, decisiveness and collaboration, PM Chinh stated that any challenge could be overcome with determination, proper execution and mutual trust. At the meeting, representatives from the UK Advisory Council, the British Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (BritCham), and UK businesses praised Vietnam's dynamic investment environment and acknowledged the Government's efforts to promote reform, innovation and sustainable growth. Participants discussed Vietnam's plans to establish international financial centre, attract green finance, develop renewable energy and support social sectors such as education and healthcare. UK businesses expressed a strong commitment to long-term investment in Vietnam. They voiced their readiness to assist Vietnam in building international financial centre, mobilising green capital, and developing legal frameworks for green finance. They also pledged support for the country's energy transition, digital economy development, and human resources training, while deepening collaboration in healthcare and social welfare. Delegates discussed UK–Vietnam trade amid global economic challenges, shared concerns faced by UK companies operating in Vietnam, and offered suggestions to address regulatory inconsistencies and facilitate trade and investment under the UKVFTA and CPTPP. As one of the key pillars of the Vietnam–UK Strategic Partnership, economic ties have grown steadily. The two countries' shared commitment to a rules-based multilateral trading system is reflected in agreements like the UKVFTA and CPTPP. In 2024, bilateral trade reached more than GBP8 billion ($10.9 million), with UK imports from Vietnam totalling GBP6.8 billion and exports to Vietnam valued at 1.3 billion GBP. By the end of 2023, the UK's direct investment in Vietnam had reached GBPf1.3 billion, with over 400 UK enterprises operating in the country, from multinationals to SMEs. - Vietnam News/ANN

Hanoi pushes private sector growth agenda

The PM is calling for clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of the Vietnamese state, local authorities, businesses and citizens in implementing Resolution 168. — Bernama HANOI: Prime Minister (PM) Pham Minh Chinh on May 31 chaired a dialogue with enterprises and business associations to effectively implement a resolution on the private economy's development. PM Chính said that after the Politburo issued Resolution 68, the government submitted to the National Assembly a proposal to issue Resolution 198 on specific mechanisms and policies to promote private economic development. The government subsequently issued its own programme and action plan to implement the resolution. The PM emphasised that the resolutions are already comprehensive and well-coordinated. The most desired now is to organise implementation effectively, guided by the spirit of 'thinking deeply and acting boldly.' It also needs to find the most efficient approaches to unlock the potential of nearly one million enterprises and five million household businesses. He called for clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of the state, local authorities, businesses and citizens in implementing the resolution. PM Chính also urged unity and coordination with the spirit. 'When the party has provided direction, the government is committed, the National Assembly agrees, the people are supportive and the country is hopeful, we only discuss how to act, not whether to retreat.' At the dialogue, minister and Government Office chairman Tran Van Son announced the decision to establish the National Steering Committee for the implementation of the resolution. Enterprises and business associations expressed their commitment to operating in compliance with the law, fostering business ethics and a healthy business culture, eliminating opportunistic and illegal practices, renewing their business mindset and enhancing their capabilities. 'If everyone joins hands with the government in fully and faithfully implementing the policies that have been set out, I believe all enterprises will grow. That is also a global trend,' Mai Kieu Lien, CEO of Vinamilk, said. Delegates also hoped for continued support from the government to facilitate business and production development. 'The state should soon develop and issue a special mechanism for science and technology enterprises in the agricultural sector, including policies on land, credit, tax and training; and amend the Law on Crop Production to align it with other laws,' Tran Manh Bao from Thai Binh Seed Group said. He suggested establishing innovation support funds and developing a mechanism for cooperation and technology transfer between the public and private sectors. Nguyen Van Khoi, president of the Vietnam Real Estate Association, said the priority is to address institutional bottlenecks and guarantee rights that enable private economic development. — Viet Nam News/ANN
