Melly Goeslaw's prom-themed concert served nostalgia and some disappointments

While the show was filled with heartfelt moments and high-energy performances, it wasn't without its drawbacks. By SHAH SHAMSHIRI 03 Jun 2025 11:53am Melly brought her popular concert series back with Prom Nite, following two crowd-favourite editions. Photo: Bangsawan Pictures Dubbed as Indonesia's queen of soundtracks, Indonesian singer-songwriter Melly Goeslaw once again took centre stage at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur as she performed at the Ada Apa Dengan Melly Concert – Prom Nite Edition. This concert marked the third instalment of her popular concert series, following the earlier Ada Apa Dengan Melly...? (Back to School) and Ada Apa Dengan Melly & Friends (Malam Graduasi). For many hard-core fans and those who missed out on the previous two events, this was their golden opportunity to finally witness Melly live in action. Celebrated for her remarkable contributions to the Indonesian and Malaysian music scenes, Melly performed not only her own songs but also those she had written for numerous other vocalists. From sweeping ballads to youthful anthems, her setlist showcased her lasting impact as a songwriter whose work has stood the test of time. However, while the show was filled with heartfelt moments and high-energy performances, it wasn't without its the evening, many fans noticed that Melly's vocals were not at their best, with several moments where she encouraged the audience to sing along—or more accurately, sing for her. While this created a communal concert vibe, it also subtly pointed to a performance that was vocally underwhelming. Melly encouraged fans to sing along throughout the night, creating a lively crowd vibe, though some felt her vocals didn't quite hit the mark. Photo: Bangsawan Pictures The redeeming moment of the night came in the form of Malaysia's powerhouse vocalist Aina Abdul, who took to the stage and stole the spotlight with her stunning rendition of Cinta, a song originally performed by Melly and Kris Dayanti. Aina's commanding vocals and stage presence earned her roaring applause and left a lasting impression. Melly also took a moment to honour her Malaysian fans with a medley of iconic local hits: Janji Manis by Aishah, Betapa Ku Cinta Padamu by Siti Nurhaliza, and Isabella by Search. Aina Abdul delivered a show-stopping version of Cinta, leaving the crowd in awe. Photo: Bangsawan Pictures The crowd went wild, especially as both Siti Nurhaliza and Amy Search were spotted in the VIP section, singing along with evident joy. Also in attendance were Indonesian stars Rossa and Raffi Ahmad, lending their support to the beloved songstress. But the highlight many fans had been eagerly anticipating was the appearance of Indonesian heart-throb Nicholas Saputra, who graced the stage to deliver the iconic poem from the cult classic Ada Apa Dengan Cinta. Emotions ran high as three lucky fans—women who admitted to having recently endured heartbreak—were invited on stage to meet Nicholas in person alongside Melly. The moment was a fangirl dream come true, and the screams from the audience were deafening. Although Melly's vocal performance didn't quite hit the mark, the night was a triumphant celebration of nostalgia. Fans were transported back to the golden era of Indonesian movie soundtracks, with songs that defined the adolescence and memories of a generation. Prom Nite gave fans something deeper: connection and nostalgia. Photo: Bangsawan Pictures The setlist was a mix of legendary hits and crowd favourites, including: Ku Bahagia (opening with a full string and orchestral arrangement), Ingin Mencintai dan Dicintai, a medley of Bimbang and Denting, Di Mana Malumu, Hanya Memuji, Tentang Seseorang, Berdua Lebih Baik, Jangan Pernah Berubah, Bunda (with rising Indonesian star Dinda Ghania), and many others. All in all, Ada Apa Dengan Melly: Prom Nite may not have delivered a perfect vocal performance, but it offered something just as valuable—a shared experience of music, memory, and the emotional resonance of growing up with Melly Goeslaw's legendary soundtracks. (Video) UK Singer Jessie J Praises M'sian Artist Amsyar Leee; Compares Him To Freddie Mercury

It's not every day that we see one of our local talents take to the international stage and represent the country. Singer Shila Amzah has done so multiple times, having competed in singing competitions in China, most recently in 'Singing With Legends (我们的歌)'. It seems that Amsyar Leee, who first rose to fame for his Siti Nurhaliza impressions on TikTok, is following in her footsteps, giving it his all in the 'Sing! Asia' contest, which also took place in China. Not only did he deliver powerful performances, but he also earned praise from UK superstar Jessie J. Here's what she said about the Malaysian artist: Last week, singer Amsyar Leee announced that he was one of the contestants for the 'Sing! Asia' singing competition on the iQIYI streaming platform. 'It's been an incredible journey sharing the stage with talented artists from all across Asia. Every moment was filled with growth, emotion, and memories I'll carry forever. Thank you to everyone who's been cheering me on from the start,' he wrote in his captions. In the latest episode, the young star performed his rendition of Marsha Milan's 'Cinta'. As shown in the video below, the judges, audience and fellow contestants were blown away by his powerful vocals, especially when he hit the high notes. Shortly after his performance, each judge, including UK singer Jessie J, gave their feedback. The 'Bang Bang' songstress praised the Malaysian artist for his vocals, even comparing his presence to the legendary Freddie Mercury of Queen, stating that they both carry a certain aura. 'I think [your performance] was amazing! I'd love to see you use the stage more—use that power. You have this Freddie Mercury [angel-like aura], and I love Malaysia. Fantastic. I really do think you need to celebrate,' she told Amsyar. And celebrate he did, as it was announced at the end of the episode that the Perak-born performer had been crowned the King of Singers for the show's opening battle, having earned the most votes. Congratulations to Amsyar Leee on his latest achievement! Watch the full episode below, or skip to 27:15 for Jessie J's comments: Source: YouTube

In numerous conversations, you choose between different dialogue options, thus influencing the course of the game. There's also time to explore the Indonesian capital and there are repeated short rhythmic passages where you play guitar riffs in the style of Guitar Hero . These usually sound melancholic, fitting the mood of this indie game. The visuals of Afterlove EP can best be described as a hand-drawn 2D look in a manga style. While the animations are sometimes simple, they still appear very lively and create a special atmosphere. The whole thing is accompanied by a fantastic soundtrack that perfectly underscores Rama's personal journey. Afterlove EP is available starting at around €20/US$20/RM49 on Steam for the PlayStation 4/5, the Xbox One/Series, the Nintendo Switch and PCs. The age rating is 12 years. – dpa/Tribune News Service

Springfield's Dickerson Park Zoo welcomes Malayan tiger as part of species survival plan

A 9-year-old Malayan tiger is joining Dickerson Park Zoo, according to a press release. Cinta, who was born in California in 2015, came to the Springfield zoo based on the recommendations of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Malayan Tiger Species Survival Plan. The species is considered critically endangered, with only 100 to 250 Malayan tigers in the wild. The species survival plan is meant to "ensure the sustainability of a healthy, genetically diverse, and demographically varied AZA population," according to AZA. Cinta and the zoo's female tiger, Berisi, will potentially be part of that. Cinta is not yet on exhibit to the public as he is acclimating to his surroundings. Dickerson Park Zoo, 3043 N. Fort Ave., is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guests may stay in the park one hour after the admission gate closes.
