LGL: Robert Benjamin Wiley Community Charter School

Even though most schools are on spring break this week, that didn't stop the JET24/FOX66 Loving Giving Local team from making a stop at a local charter school. The R.B. Wiley Community Charter School was the recipient of this week's Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express Resale Center. The school has two locations, with most students attending class in the former Hammermill Paper Company research and development building. The Wiley charter school has been a part of Erie's educational landscape 27 years, founded by the late R. Benjamin Wiley, long-time executive director of GECAC. 'We serve as a school choice here in the city of Erie. About 550 students grades K-8 come to our charter school every year. We look to produce the best students we can so they can be successful in their life,' said Joe Cintron, charter school director of operations and HR manager. Good things happen at the Wiley Community Charter school. Several teachers have been honored with the JET 24 PennWest University Golden Apple award. Since going to this school is a choice, what makes this place different? According to Cintron, 'We love the children that come in but we also support families as well. So, we try to do a humanitarian kind of effort and the way we treat our children and families, so when they come here, they're not just part of a school but part of our family.' While classrooms are empty this week due to spring break, when students in grades K-2 return, they're going to learn they'll benefit from this week's Loving Giving Local donation. 'We're looking to use it for incentives for our K-2nd students for literacy and math, Cintron said. 'So, we're going to give them some assessments, and if they do well, we're going to give them some incentives for that.' After presenting a check for $250, Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center said, 'well this is a community charter school so for us to be able to bring loving giving local here today and to learn the donation we bring is going to go to an incentive program for K-2 grade, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about and we're proud to be here today.' Man jailed in Luzerne County is charged in Christmas Eve fatal shooting in Connecticut

Mar. 27—WILKES-BARRE — A man accused of fleeing Butler Township police and initiating a dangerous pursuit that involved a carjacking, a home invasion and shots fired at a motorist was charged with a fatal shooting in Connecticut. Isaac D. Cintron, 32, addresses listed as Chicago, Ill., and New Haven, Conn., was charged by New Haven police this week with fatally shooting Heriberto Cotto, 43, on Dec. 24, 2024. The State of Connecticut Superior Court on March 12 issued an arrest warrant charging Cintron with murder, criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a pistol or revolver, according to court records. Police in New Haven allege Cintron and Cotto were engaged in an argument prior to the shooting. Cotto died at New Haven Medical Center upon arrival, police in New Haven reported. Cintron has been jailed without bail at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility since his arrest near Barnsville, Schuylkill County, following a pursuit that began outside a Dunkin Donuts store on North Hunter Highway in Butler Township, Luzerne County, on Dec. 30. Court records say Butler Township police encountered a Ford Explorer reported stolen by the Fairlawn, New Jersey, police department parked outside the Dunkin Donuts. Cintron fled the scene and traveled east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 where he struck another vehicle, court records say. Court records allege Cintron abandoned the Ford, walked toward a stopped vehicle and fired two shots at the driver, who reversed his vehicle. After firing the shots, court records say, Cintron ran into the Sand Springs housing community, where he entered a residence on Refuge Circle by climbing through an open first-floor window. Once inside the house, Cintron allegedly threatened the homeowner with a firearm and demanded keys to their vehicle, but was not able to start. Cintron fled the house and allegedly carjacked a woman's Toyota Rav4 at gunpoint at Refuge Circle and Long Run Road, telling the woman to take her 3-year-old son with her. State police troopers spotted Cintron and initiated a second pursuit on Interstate 80 and onto Route 54 where he was apprehended near Barnsville. Cintron is facing 39 criminal offenses in Luzerne County Court, including criminal attempt to commit criminal homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, reckless endangerment and theft. A search of the stolen Ford recovered numerous drug-related items, Cintron's Social Security card and a Chicago homeless card, a Connecticut identification card belonging to another person, numerous clothing items and a ski mask, according to the search warrant inventory receipt. The search warrant affidavit says Cintron was "homeless" in New Haven, Conn., but due to an undisclosed incident, he left New Haven with intentions to visit a girlfriend in Chicago and stole the Ford while traveling through New Jersey. Although Cintron is being held without bail on the charges in Luzerne County, his bail set in Connecticut for the fatal shooting is listed as $3 million, court records say.

Man arrested in Pa. after shooting, police chase charged with homicide in Connecticut

(WBRE/WYOU) — A man arrested in Pennsylvania for shooting and threatening multiple people with a gun, leading to a miles-long police chase, is now facing charges of homicide in Connecticut. 32-year-old Isaac Cintron is facing homicide charges in Connecticut for allegedly shooting and killing 43-year-old Heriberto Cotto. According to the City of New Haven Department of Police Services, on December 24, around 8:00 p.m., officers were called for a person shot. On the scene, officers found Cotto unresponsive with gunshot wounds; he later died at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. Officers said they discovered ballistic evidence in the street, along with the victim's car, and were able to determine that the victim was involved in an argument with another person before being shot. Eventually, investigators linked Cintron as the suspect involved in the homicide case. On December 30, Pennsylvania State Police were notified of a stolen vehicle out of New Jersey traveling on Interstate 80. Butler Township Police discovered the reportedly stolen vehicle at Dunkin' on North Hunter Highway. Tractor-trailer driver charged after hit-and-run on I-80 Cintron, listed as homeless in Connecticut, was driving the SUV. Police tried to get Cintron out of the SUV, but he refused and fled onto I-80 driving east in the westbound lanes, troopers noted. While driving the wrong way on I-80, investigators stated Cintron hit another car, exited his vehicle, shot a pistol at another driver, chased the car, and kept firing the gun until Cintron ran into the woods. Cintron walked to the Sand Springs Community, and a homeowner called 911, informing police that Cintron entered their house, threatened them with a gun, and demanded keys to their car, as stated in the affidavit. The homeowner said they were able to chase Cintron out of the house; however, shortly after, Cintron threatened a woman at gunpoint and stole her vehicle, according to court documents. Multiple police units caught up with Cintron and found him driving on I-80, and state police tried to pull him over, but he ignored them, causing a chase to begin, police stated. The chase ended in Schuylkill County when Cintron crashed after going over spike strips. Around a dozen police vehicles surrounded the SUV before one trooper appeared to smash one of the windows to remove the driver. Cintron is being held in Pennsylvania while awaiting extradition back to Connecticut. Reporter Andy Mehalshick will have more on the Cintrons' arrest in later editions of 28/22 News.
