Karman Line Annexation protesters walk more than three miles across Colorado Springs

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo) — The Citizens to Stop Illogical Growth, a group opposing the Karman Line Annexation proposition, which would bring about 1,900 acres of El Paso land into Colorado Springs, is making its voice heard. They walked more than three miles through the heart of the city on Saturday, May 3, roughly the same distance as the area that could soon be added to Colorado Springs. 'We are out to tell the community and show the community that this annexation of the Karman line is illogical and not good,' said Ann Rush, an organizer with Citizens to Stop Illogical Growth. The group's journey began at Acacia Park before walking down Platte Avenue with a straight shot to the Citadel Mall. Nick Raven came up with the idea to walk more than three miles, saying it's more than just traveling by foot across town. 'What this symbolizes is people coming together for a common cause,' Raven said. 'This is a grassroots, organized event. I didn't have anyone poking in my shoulder handing me a check to do this.' The group joined the Vote No on Karman Line March, and together they wanted to express their distaste against the annexation east of the city with this walk. They believe the negative impacts the project will have massive consequences on the city's water supply and also increase traffic. The groups want officials to invest in the city's current infrastructure, like streets, homes, and buildings along Platte Avenue. 'They could actually improve on it and really improve the quality of life for the residents who live around that area,' Rush said. Meanwhile, Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade has backed the annexation. I offer my full support to our city council in reaffirming its previous decision to approve the Karman Line Annexation. Mayor Yemi Mobolade More recently, the Colorado Secretary of State's Office dismissed a complaint filed by the developers against the petitioners. Ultimately, it will be up to Colorado Springs voters to decide with a special election set for June 17th. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Juneteenth Festival to be held at Citadel Mall

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — After a loss of funding put the annual Southern Colorado Juneteenth Festival at risk, organizers have announced that the event is officially on, and with a new venue. Juneteenth is a national holiday that commemorates the official emancipation of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and it has been celebrated in Colorado Springs for the past four years by OneBody Ent., a local non-profit that seeks to serve youth and adults by helping to prevent criminal offenses and re-offenses. According to organizers, the festival is the biggest multi-cultural event celebrated by all races, nationalities, and creeds. The event's funding comes from the Lodgers and Automobile Rental Tax (LART) fund. In 2024, the City collected about $10 million, but requests far outpaced that amount. As a result, the City had to slash funding from numerous city events. Through a community call to action, festival organizers raised thousands of dollars to offset the cuts. During that same call to action, businesses spoke up and expressed their desire to help–namely, the Citadel Mall. 'The Citadel Mall offered to host the 2025 Southern Colorado Juneteenth Festival on their premises,' organizers said. 'Following conversations to ensure that festival expectations are met, we are proud to announce that the new location for the 2025 Southern Colorado Juneteenth Festival is at the Citadel Mall.' The event will be held in the parking lot near the old Baby's R Us location on June 20-22. The new location will provide ample parking, entry to the mall, and easy access to public transportation. The free event will boast vendors, music, artists, a car show, health fair, fashion corner, and so much more. 'We look forward to all of your continued support as we make this move for the 2025 SCJF and can't wait to see all of you this year as we continue our tradition in our home Colorado Springs,' organizers said. Colorado Springs' Hooters to close after 35 years

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Hooters will be closing its doors after 35 years in Colorado Springs. The restaurant, known for its wings, opened in 1990 and is located near the Citadel Mall. The last day Hooters will be opened will be Sunday, March 16. 'It's been one incredible ride since we first opened in 1990—cold beers, hot wings, and even hotter memories with the best fans around! We couldn't have done it without YOU—our amazing guests and staff who made this place feel like home,' wrote the restaurant via Facebook. To celebrate the restaurant's run, Hooters is inviting the community to give the location the 'sendoff it deserves.' 'We've cheered, celebrated, and shared countless good times with this community, and we can't thank you enough for being part of the journey. Let's make this final weekend one to remember!' Hooters wrote. 'Stop by, raise a glass, and help us give this legendary location the sendoff it deserves.' The location at 750 Citadel Drive East Ste. 1012 is Hooters' sole location in the Springs. However, individuals can still visit other Colorado locations in Aurora, Lone Tree, Loveland, and Westminster. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
