Conor McGregor supporters planning similar anti-immigration protest in Cork

The same loose coalition of anti-immigrant 'activists' and far-right agitators behind the recent demonstration on Dublin's O'Connell Street - backed by former-MMA fighter Conor McGregor - are now planning a similar 'day of action' in Cork's City centre. Several prominent faces in the anti-immigrant coalition in Dublin are promoting a 'protest against corrupt Government' in Cork city on the afternoon of June 7th. One organiser claims to have the backing of McGregor for this event and is urging Dubliners to travel to Cork on the day, saying 'this is going to be massive'. This demo will clash with the weekly pro-Palestinian marches, which also start on the Grand Parade. It's unclear yet if the Dublin-based organisers will team up with more local activists for the day but there will be fears of confrontation and possible violence in the city centre. In September 2023, one man was arrested after an action by far-right agitators targeting Cork. City Library saw two men from the group drag a wheelchair user out of his chair and pull him to the ground. Gardai had to encircle the disabled man and help him away for medical assessment. The Library had been forced to close in July of 2023 after far-right activists repeatedly targeted staff there. Cork City Council took the decision to protect staff and library users after several incidents of aggression. Then Lord Mayor Cllr Kieran McCarthy was also confronted by aggressive anti-immigrant protestors in 2023 - he came up with a novel way to deal with them. There are also concerns that the planned demo in Cork City on June 7th could draw anti-immigrant figures from Loyalist paramilitary circles in Belfast. At the Dublin protest in late April that was backed by Conor McGregor, UVF figure and convicted armed bank robber Mark Sinclair was amongst a number of men from the UVF and other Loyalist paramilitary groups showing 'solidarity' with those wrapping themselves in the Irish tricolour. In the past, members of groups including 'Coolock Says No' have been pictured at Loyalist-led marches in Belfast. This led to one of the many splits inside the anti-immigrant and far-right groups operating in Ireland. After the recent march in Dublin, which was attended by several thousand, a well-known Celtic Supporters Club in Dublin says that a pub in the city centre where they were celebrating the Hoops' title-winning game was attacked by over 50 thugs who had been at the anti-immigration demonstration. According to the Naomh Padraig Celtic Supporters Club, an estimated 35 to 50 individuals who had participated in the earlier anti-immigration march stormed into the pub and "launched into a physical attack on the Celtic FC supporters and horrendous racial abuse of non-Irish members of staff and management'. People take part in an anti-immigration protest in Dublin City centre. Thousands of people participated in an anti-immigration protest in Dublin city centre, after Conor McGregor posted on social media in support of the march. Public transport between Dublin and Cork is expected to get extra security around June 7th and a large counter demonstration involving several groups in Cork City is already being planned. Should the demonstration in Cork go ahead, we are likely to see a significant Garda policing operation in response, along the lines of the strong presence seen at the counter-protests in Dublin recently. A Garda spokesperson told CorkBeo that it is their policy not to comment 'on remarks made by third parties'. "However, An Garda Síochána fully respects the constitutional rights of citizens to assemble in public, provided such actions remain within the bounds of statutory law." The spokesperson went on to say: "Ireland operates as a constitutional democracy, ensuring that citizens have the right to freely express their beliefs and opinions, as well as to gather peacefully, in accordance with statutory provisions. To oversee public gatherings, An Garda Síochána implements appropriate and proportionate policing measures, ensuring that citizens can exercise their rights while maintaining public order. Any Garda response to evolving events follows a community policing model, employing a graduated approach that considers relevant legislation and prioritises public safety." Irish Mirror's sister site CorkBeo has contacted Irish Rail and Bus Eireann to ask if extra security will be in place on public transport and around Kent Station and the main bus station on Parnell Place on the day. Exhibition showcases Newcastle's African American music legacy

A student is showcasing the various African American musicians who visited a city in the 1960s. Lily Usher-Unsworth, from Whitley Bay, has designed a small exhibition for City Library in Newcastle, which is running until 28 on research of the library's archives, it highlights the major artists who visited Newcastle between 1957 and 1970 such as Jimi Hendrix, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington."It's a celebration not only of incredible music but also of the cultural exchange that happened in Newcastle during the civil rights era," she said. The exhibition is part of the 22-year-old's final year project at Northumbria University. Ms Usher-Unsworth had only asked the library to host it for an afternoon so that it could be marked by her supervisors, but the library then said they would display it for two weeks. "It's spiralled – in a good way!" she said. She said one of the main things she had taken away from the work was how many famous musicians visited Newcastle at the time."When you got to book a concert nowadays, it's not often that someone you want to see comes to Newcastle," she said."If you want to go and see someone you've got to go to Manchester or Edinburgh or somewhere nearby."But looking at concert programmes, she saw that famous artists such as Duke Ellington visited the city multiple times. The exhibition features African American musicians who visited three venues in Newcastle during the late 1950s and 1960s: City Hall, the former Odeon cinema and Club a'Gogo. It is made up from archival material held by the library, which had been donated by locals and compiled by volunteers. "A lot of it is programmes, signed photographs and concert tickets," said Ms Usher-Unsworth. She said the material was housed in several boxes which she had to sift through."I felt like a right nuisance to the staff there but they've been absolutely fab," she said headphones playing the featured artists' music were available at the exhibit for visitors to enjoy. BT events to advise on switch from analogue to digital landlines

The impending switch from analogue to digital landlines is the subject of an awareness drive by BT, which will host events across Yorkshire and the Humber in March - including at four locations in the Bradford area. The event series to inform about the switch - which is due by the end of January 2027 - will include visits to Bradford, Shipley, Keighley, and Ilkley. BT experts will be on hand to discuss the changes and necessary steps that customers must take. According to a spokesperson for BT, "landlines in the UK are going digital to replace the 40-year-old analogue landline technology which has become increasingly fragile. "For most customers, this industry-wide upgrade will see calls made over a broadband line." Vicky Hicks, senior engagement manager at BT, said: "The landline is here to stay, and for the majority of customers, making the switch simply means plugging your phone into a broadband router instead of into a wall-mounted phone socket. "This will bring new benefits like advanced spam call blocking. "On average, we prevent 15,000 scam calls a day from reaching our customers. "Thanks to upgrades to Yorkshire and the Humber's broadband infrastructure, most homes and businesses have access to superfast broadband using the Openreach network. "This means most of our customers won't experience much of a difference in their service when they make the switch." A new, more advanced battery back-up unit is now available to BT customers, enabling digital calls to be made in the event of a power outage. The new battery is smaller and lighter than the current version and features a standby mode which can be used during prolonged power cuts. Customers who identify as vulnerable, have additional needs, or who use a telecare alarm system will not be switched until spring 2025 at the earliest, BT also confirmed - this is to allow time for data sharing agreements to be put in place, and at-home support for telecare users to become available. A dedicated landline service will be offered to customers who don't use broadband, until a digital solution becomes available (or 2030, if that comes sooner). The Bradford area events will take place at the following locations and times: City Library, Bradford, on March 25 from 10am to 2pm; Shipley Library, Shipley, on March 17 from 10am to 2pm; Keighley Library, Keighley, on March 18 from 10am to 2pm; and The Clarke Foley Centre, Ilkley, on March 11 from 10am to 4pm.
