Demolition begins on Sacramento's faulty Del Rio Trail bridge over I-5

Sacramento's bad bridge is coming down. Demolition work is now underway on the Del Rio Trail Bridge that crosses Interstate 5, connecting the Land Park neighborhood with the Sacramento River Bike Trail. We first revealed last September that inspectors found the bridge was improperly built with lightweight concrete and rebar. The City of Sacramento is forcing the bridge builder to pay the cost of tearing it down and starting over. At night, crews are working to remove the pavement, which is forcing several lanes of the freeway to be shut down and is causing a big traffic backup. It's also creating some late-night noise for nearby neighbors. The multi-million dollar bridge was designed to allow bicyclists and pedestrians a safe path to cross the freeway without using city streets. Sacramento city officials held a grand opening celebration in May 2024, but the bridge was never opened to the public and has been fenced off all this time. Trail users are frustrated with the delay. "I'd like to see this thing opened up because you avoid so much traffic going over here," bicyclist Will Wagoner said. Wagoner is encouraged to see crews fixing the bridge blunder, and he's hopeful it will finally be finished soon. "This is a little bit positive," he said of the demolition work. "At least they're on the bridge. If they have to demo it, then just get it over with and we can move on." The City of Sacramento said that work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Sacramento Republic FC announces groundbreaking ceremony for Railyards soccer stadium

Amid questions over development at the Railyards, Sacramento Republic FC has planned a groundbreaking for its new planned stadium. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place Monday, Aug. 18. City of Sacramento and Republic FC officials have stressed that the development will move forward despite the protest that has halted the Railyards financing deal. California law stipulates that if half of the people currently living in a special tax protest it, the project must be put on hold for a year. City officials confirmed earlier in the summer that they've received enough letters to halt the deal. Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty and a number of Republic FC officials are expected to be in attendance for Monday's groundbreaking ceremony.

Vacant Old Sacramento restaurant space along riverfront seeks operator

Sacramento officials are fielding proposals to operate a prominent riverfront restaurant space in the city's historic district. The space is located at 1110 Front Street, the former Rio City Café location. Financial troubles and problems with the city-owned deck were cited as the reason for that restaurant's closing in 2024 after three decades in business. Now, the City of Sacramento is looking for a new operator to take over the space. "This waterfront location is a cornerstone of Old Sacramento, and probably the most unique and high-profile opportunity in all of Northern California," said Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum in a statement. Work is already underway to demolish the existing outdoor deck, city officials say. That work is expected to be mostly completed by fall. City officials say they aren't just open to restaurant concepts taking over the spot. High-quality entertainment, cultural, or performance-based concepts will also be considered. Interested parties need to submit their proposals by Aug. 29 through the City of Sacramento's online bid portal.
