Rain helping with wildfire fight in northern Manitoba

Recent rain in northern Manitoba is having an impact on wildfire fighting efforts in northern Manitoba. According to a post on the City of Thompson's Facebook page, the region received three to 10 millimetres of rain. Crews are currently working to extinguish hot spots. 'A low pressure system is expected to arrive on Thursday and will bring additional precipitation and high relative humidity,' the city said on Facebook. The largest fire near Thompson is located roughly 14 kilometres from the city, is approximately 18,365 hectares in size and still considered out of control. The city said the east and south-central regions of the fire have had reduced activity due to the rain. Crews from Quebec arrived Monday to help battle the fire. Snow Lake council to discuss possible re-entry Meanwhile in Snow Lake, members of town council have returned to the community on Monday and will be meeting Tuesday night with the Manitoba Wildfire Service and the emergency management office. The meeting will focus on current wildfire conditions and estimated timelines for re-entry. The town has been under a mandatory evacuation due to a wildfire that is approximately 57,765 hectares and out of control. According to Tuesday's update, elevated winds reactivated some sections of the fire, but the fire was in areas already in identified containment zones, and have not threatened priority lines. The town said there is a potential for scattered showers to help with suppression efforts, but added a low-pressure system in the next few days could bring strong winds and direction changes that could make conditions challenging.

Crews working to stop wildfires from advancing into Thompson

Northern Manitoba residents continue to flee and find shelter as wildfires forced several communities out of their homes. Firefighters from around the world are working to keep nearby wildfires from advancing into Thompson, Man. In Facebook updates posted on Wednesday, the City of Thompson said a team from Australia will serve as incident command for the fire north of the city. It added that 10 firefighters from Mexico are also there to help, cutting down trees and extinguishing hotspots along Provincial Road 280. The city noted that crews are establishing control lines and have completed an additional dozer guard, creating a third fire break by the airport. According to Thompson, there isn't any significant precipitation in the weather forecast; however, the fire danger level is expected to remain moderate due to humidity levels. It added that temperatures are forecast to rise into the high 20s through the end of the week but should drop by next week when some rain may arrive in the area. Though lightning started a new fire west of the Wuskwatim road on Wednesday, crews responded immediately and are expected to extinguish it quickly. According to provincial data, the fire near Thompson is 16,370 hectares in size and remains out of control.

Thompson residents told to prepare for evacuation due to wildfires

Manitoba's wildfire season has prompted more people to evacuate from communities, and Thompson is on alert. The largest city in Manitoba's north is telling residents to be prepared for a potential evacuation due to wildfires. The City of Thompson posted on its Facebook page Friday that while an evacuation order has not yet been issued, one may be issued over the next few days. 'This pre-alert notice is being issued because the northwest (edges) of Fire NO005, burning near Cross Lake, could reach Highway 6 and prevent travel to the south,' the notice reads, noting this is a different fire than the one burning north of Thompson. Fire NO005 is approximately 84,375 hectares in size, while Fire NO061, roughly 14 kilometres from Thompson, is 16,730 hectares. Both fires are currently out of control. If a mandatory evacuation order is issued, residents are being told they have 12 hours from the time the alert is issued to be out of the town. A pre-planning registration form is available on the city's website to help plan the evacuation. Firefighters with the city are also going into residents' yards to place sprinklers with hoses on the roofs to help protect homes. The hoses will be connected to a main line connected to a water source, the town said. There are currently 107 active wildfires in Manitoba, according to Friday's fire bulletin. A congregate shelter will be set up at Winnipeg's RBC Convention Centre starting July 13. The province's fire bulletin added another congregate shelter will be open in Portage la Prairie.
