Poon Nah City Home Made Noodle: $6 razor clam noodles & fried side dishes hidden in City Plaza
If you thought that all City Plaza had to offer was in its first 4 levels, you're sorely mistaken. Tucked away in level 5 is a small food court housing Poon Nah City Home Made Noodle, serving up soupy bowls of customisable seafood noodles and freshly fried side dishes daily. Craving crispy prawn fritters, I made my way down to City Plaza this morning – partly to avoid the midday crowd and mainly because I dreamt of fragrant prawns last night. While the food court may be small, there was no shortage of seats. I was also glad to escape Singapore's humid heat in the air-conditioned setting, especially when there were only 2 other diners at 10.30am. Serving up more than 20 years of history, Poon Nah City Home Made Noodle is no stranger to their craft. Their repertoire includes their signature noodles, affordable rice dishes and various 小吃 – side dishes that are bound to fill the gaps in your stomach after the mains. While I had initially journeyed here in search of prawn fritters, there was no way I was going to head home without a bowl of piping hot noodles. After a painstakingly long moment of consulting the extensive menu, I decided on the Abalone Clam Hand Made (S$6) and a plate of 3-in-1 (S$6) fried goods. While I was impressed by the 4 plump razor clams, I was a little miffed by the English translation of the dish. Perhaps due to a faulty app, the 鲍贝 – or razor clam – was translated to 'abalone clam'. So if you're searching for a bowl of abalone noodles, you should probably get the Abalone Home Made Noodle (S$13.50) instead! Now, on to the actual taste of the noodles. The 'handmade' factor of the noodles stood out in the yu mee, or you mian (幼面). The noodles were chewy and soaked up the broth, making them well-seasoned. Without a doughy texture, they paired nicely with the razor clams and made for a comforting bite. The broth itself likely has an anchovy base. Though it doesn't deviate from the seafood flavour profile, I do think that it lacks the subtle sweetness gained from simmering the actual clams, abalone and prawns in the soup. I would have preferred less salt in the broth as well, especially since it does get saltier when the noodles absorb the liquid. Moving on to my beloved prawn fritter. While Poon Nah City Home Made Noodle labels it as the Beansprout Cake (S$2.50), this fried dough boasts a crunchy shelled prawn nestled right on top. Since I bought this as the 3-in-1 set, the plate also came with the Crispy Prawn Cracker (S$2) and Yam Roll (S$2). Ex-Jumbo seafood chef & partners sell JB-style handmade dry noodles & cai fan The outer layer of the batter has been fried to a delicate crisp, giving way to a moist and succulent centre. Biting into a piece brings out the light fragrance of beansprouts, which is enhanced by the prawn's meatiness and crunch. The batter is perfectly seasoned, making this my go-to treat from City Plaza. However, try to eat the beansprout cake while hot, since the batter can get a little jelak when cold. For the other components of the 3-in-1 set, the Crispy Prawn Cracker was my next target. It features a brittle network of batter fried in oil, best enjoyed with one of Poon Nah City's sauces. While I loved the crunch from the cracker, I was disappointed that there was no hint of prawn flavour at all. Based on the dish name, I had expected a keropok-style fragrance where prawn paste is directly added to the batter before frying. However, this Crispy Prawn Cracker tasted more like the oil it was fried in than the prawns advertised. It only took on flavour with chilli sauces and akin to a salted crisp rather than keropok. The yam roll, on the other hand, was more appealing. It had slivers of carrot and soft yam seasoned lightly, and I liked the chewiness of the roll. The outer layer of the rolls was also fried to an appetising golden brown, intercepting the yam paste with textured bites. For this, I preferred dipping it in the sweet and garlicky plum sauce. Poon Nah City's chilli is rather spicy, so a little goes a long way. When paired with the yam roll, I found it a bit too strong for my taste. While my hunger was satiated with the portions for each dish, I do think that Poon Nah City's noodles and sides were a little underwhelming. I liked that the noodles were fresh and made-to-order, and the side dishes were cut into bite-sized pieces, but they lacked the flavours that I was expecting. Of course, I'd stop by for a Beansprout Cake if I was passing by. But would I travel here just for the sake of dining at Poon Nah City Home Made Noodle? Probably not. I'm glad I took the time to try their food and scratch my prawn fritter itch, though! Domestic helper left with swollen face after a $280 cosmetic job in Geylang open space
SINGAPORE: An employer has revealed that she was left shocked and angered after her foreign domestic helper turned up after her day off with a swollen face, after having paid $280 for unlicensed cosmetic procedures in the Geylang area. The dubious procedures were booked through TikTok. The employer, Tricia Zhou, took to Facebook this week and revealed that she has since made a police report. She recounted that her helper had taken her day off on May 11. 'The next day on May 12, I noticed her face looked swollen and different,' said Ms Zhou, 'After questioning her, she admitted that she had done braces and a nose thread lift. I was extremely shocked and angry.' The procedures were allegedly carried out in an open space behind City Plaza along Geylang Road, a popular Sunday gathering spot for many domestic workers. Expressing concern, Ms Zhou wrote, 'This was not a clinic, meaning the procedures were completely unlicensed and illegal. The prices were very cheap. $100 for the nose thread lift and $180 for braces, which likely drew many others in.' She added that the helper 'found out about it through a TikTok account that was promoting these cosmetic procedures. After commenting on a video, someone will arrange everything. According to her, more than 20 other individuals have also undergone similar procedures on the same day.' Ms Zhou shared that the individual who brought her helper to the location claimed to be leaving Singapore after completing her own employment contract. When Ms Zhou asked her helper to show her the TikTok accounts that promoted the services, they appeared to have been deleted or hidden. 'She said all communication was done via TikTok through comments and payments via cash,' the employer added. Calling for more awareness to be spread on this issue and for the perpetrators to be arrested, Ms Zhou said, 'I strongly believe this is a scam and illegal cosmetic operation targeting domestic helpers who may not understand the full dangers of these unlicensed procedures. These people are earning unethical money by putting others at serious health risk.' She added, 'I explained the risks of infection, permanent damage, or even death due to unsafe and unsanitary practices to my helper, and she is now terrified.' Her post has sparked concern among netizens, many of whom called for better education and outreach to vulnerable communities regarding the risks of black-market cosmetic procedures.

Six arrested over punk band Armpunk Sindicate's vocalist assault at JB skinhead concert, police link motive to past feud
JOHOR BARU, May 14 — Police said today they arrested six men in a series of raids carried out late Monday and yesterday, following an alleged assault against a punk band vocalist after performing at a skinhead concert in City Plaza here last Sunday. Johor Bahru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the police are confident that they can solve the assault case after the incident was widely disseminated via a video footage on social media. 'Based on the video footage, investigators made a report at 1.14am yesterday, before the victim filed a police report at 3pm on the same day at the Ampang police station in Selangor. 'On Monday, police arrested three men, aged 34 to 36, at 11.30pm in Johor Baru and Segamat. Yesterday, police arrested three other men, aged between 28 and 40, in the same districts,' he said in a press statement here. The arrests were part of an ongoing police probe into the incident. Raub said investigators also confiscated six mobile phones belonging to the suspects to assist in investigations. He said initial investigations indicated that the incident was believed to have been triggered at a gymnasium near the City Plaza shopping centre here during a live band performance by Remember 69 Rundown at 10.30pm on Saturday. 'The victim, the vocalist for Armpunk Sindicate from Ampang, Selangor, was attacked by several men using metal trash cans. The cause of the incident is believed to be from an old misunderstanding that occurred between the main suspect and the victim during a music event in Ampang last year,' he said. The band had alleged that the vocalist was assaulted for failing to greet and kiss the hands of older individuals who attended the concert. Raub said the initial three suspects had prior criminal records each and one tested positive for illicit drugs through a screening test. 'The three suspects are now being remanded for four days until Friday for further investigation. Of the remaining three suspects, one currently has a criminal record and the other tested positive for marijuana abuse. All three have been remanded four days until Saturday,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for armed rioting, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of social media networks and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for introducing drugs into the body. Raub said police are in the midst of completing the investigation papers for the proposed prosecution of all the suspects in court. 'We are also tracking down any other individuals who may be involved in the incident,' he said. In the recent incident, that attracted interest from various musical groups, the victim suffered injuries to his head, face and other parts of his body. He was reported to be receiving treatment as an outpatient at the Ampang Hospital.

Six arrested in connection with viral Johor Baru gym brawl
JOHOR BARU: Six men were arrested in connection with a brawl at a live music event at City Plaza gym here on May 10, which went viral on social media. The 10.30pm incident involved a group assault on a band vocalist from Ampang, Selangor, following a live performance. The assault, caught on video and uploaded to Facebook the following day, showed the victim being struck and kicked repeatedly, including with a metal bin. Johor Baru (South) police chief, Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, said a report was filed by a police officer in the early hours of May 12 after the clip went viral. The victim also filed a police report on the alleged assault at Ampang police station on May 13. Investigations showed the motive stemmed from a prior dispute between the main suspect and the victim at an Ampang music event last year. Raub did not elaborate on the dispute but it is understood that the skinhead band vocalist was considered disrespectful for not 'kissing the hand' of older punk rock band members. The vocalist sustained head and facial injuries and was treated as an outpatient at Ampang Hospital. Raub confirmed the gym had a valid public entertainment licence. Between May 12 and 13, police carried out multiple raids in Johor Baru and Segamat, arresting six suspects aged 28 to 40. In the first operation on May 12, three men aged 34, 35, and 36 were detained. All had prior criminal records, with one testing positive for benzodiazepines. On May 13, three more suspects were arrested: a 40-year-old with one prior offence, a 39-year-old with no record, and a 28-year-old who tested positive for cannabis. All six are remanded for four days. Police seized six mobile phones from the suspects. Raub said the case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misusing network facilities, and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Police are still tracking other individuals believed to be involved in the assault. Raub warned that violent acts, particularly in public places, will not be tolerated, especially when they threaten public order or harm the city's safety reputation. The public is urged not to circulate unverified content and to assist the police with any information related to the case by contacting the district police hotline at 07-2182323.
