The power utility mentioned that they have repeatedly warned residents to stop illegal connections, which they never adhered to. 'We have repeatedly cautioned Riverpark residents that continued defiance, interference and resistance to lawful operations would result in a total supply disconnection.' 'However, those warnings have been met with contempt. Today's events have forced us to act decisively,' explained City Power. The power utility, in collaboration with SAPS, JMPD and contracted security personnel, targeted more than 450 households with no recorded electricity purchases, while 367 households had suspiciously low vending patterns. Earlier this week, community members protested outside the Alexandra Service Delivery Centre over the disconnection of nine properties found with illegally tampered meters. City Power urged residents to report illegal connections. City Power Johannesburg has issued a warning to the public regarding fake news spread about the power utility. A false WhatsApp message circulating with an image of Sydney Maluleke, a technician contractor, falsely accused him of unlawfully disconnecting electricity and soliciting bribes. 'These defamatory claims appear to have originated from a disgruntled customer whose supply was disconnected after clear evidence of meter tampering was discovered.' 'The contractor was part of a team that was officially mandated by City Power to conduct prepaid meter audits in Orange Grove,' explained City Power. City Power urges customers to act responsibly and address concerns or disagreements to the proper authorities, not on social media platforms. The power utility stated that the implementation of load shedding is due to a limited generation capacity that was caused by a delay in return of generation units amounting to over 3 000MW. Additionally, there was a loss of over 1 300MW due to unplanned breakdowns. 'The primary reason for this setback is the delay in returning several units from planned maintenance. These delays, coupled with an unplanned capacity loss that has now temporarily exceeded 13 000MW, align with the risk of scenarios shared in our Winter 2025 Outlook,' explained Eskom. Despite current pressures, Eskom assures that the system is in a stronger position when compared to previous winters. Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
