City Power Johannesburg has scheduled a planned power outage that is set to affect 18 suburbs in the city on Saturday, 17 May 2025 from 8:00 to 14:30. POWER OUTAGE DUE TO MAINTENANCE WORK
The power outage is due to maintenance work that the power utility regularly does on its electricity network.
'The interruption is necessary to do essential maintenance work on our network, which is part of our program of constantly striving to provide a better service,' the statement read.

Eskom has implemented stage-2 load shedding which will run from 16:00 on Tuesday, 13 May 2025, to 22:00 on Thursday, 15 May 2025.
The power utility stated that the implementation of load shedding is due to a limited generation capacity that was caused by a delay in return of generation units amounting to over 3 000MW.
Additionally, there was a loss of over 1 300MW due to unplanned breakdowns.
'The primary reason for this setback is the delay in returning several units from planned maintenance. These delays, coupled with an unplanned capacity loss that has now temporarily exceeded 13 000MW, align with the risk of scenarios shared in our Winter 2025 Outlook,' explained Eskom.
Despite current pressures, Eskom assures that the system is in a stronger position when compared to previous winters.

Severe weather, snow predicted for these parts of South Africa
There is expected to be some severe weather on its way to South Africa. Images: Canva Accoring to a media release from the South Africa Weather Service, a spell of 'extreme winter weather' is expected to hit the country this weekend, with snowfalls possible over all provinces, except Limpopo. In the coming days, a particularly intense cut-off low (COL) system, associated with severe winter weather, is expected to affect South Africa, persisting until at least the middle of next week over the eastern provinces. Some of the more extreme weather impacts associated with this system include the following: Snowfalls over almost every province, with the exception of Limpopo. Some of these snowfalls will be disruptive, affecting traffic flow over mountain passes (for example, the N3 at Van Reenen's pass). Strong, damaging surface winds over large parts of the interior provinces from Sunday, leading to an elevated risk of wildfires, especially over the central and eastern interior, ahead of the cold change. These extreme conditions are expected to persist over some of the eastern provinces until Wednesday. Strong to near-gale force coastal winds and very rough seas could be expected from Friday along the south-west coast, spreading to the south and east coasts during Saturday, and lasting until at least Tuesday along the east coast. Heavy rainfall leading to localised flooding and infrastructure damage over parts of the Eastern Cape coast and adjacent interior on Sunday, shifting to southern KZN on Monday. Bitterly cold daytime conditions over many provinces from Sunday, with maximum temperatures unlikely to exceed 10C°. These conditions will be exacerbated by strong, gusty winds. There is also a risk of severe thunderstorms; possibly associated with damaging hail and/or damaging winds over some provinces, including North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KZN during Monday and Tuesday. What you MUST pack before going snow chasing in South Africa
It's looking like a good weekend for snow chasing in South Africa. Weather reports indicate that the white flakes will be falling across the country. But if you're planning a trip to make snowmen, there are several things you need to consider. To successfully find the right spot, check one of the many snow watching social media communities for where the flakes have been spotted. And once you've found your winter wonderland, you'll also want to keep safe, warm and dry. Here's what you need to know. Since snow is a rare occurrence in most South Africans' lives, we're not always prepared for the reality. The white flakes may look pretty in photos, but they're also wet, often melting at the touch! With that in mind, make sure to choose your clothes carefully. Snow chasers recommend that you dress as if you are going out in heavy rain: Rain coat Waterproof shoes Scarf and beanie A change of clothing And if you're hoping to make a snowman, waterproof gloves are a good idea. Furthermore, motorists are warned that snow causes the road to become slippery. Drivers should also watch out for children playing in snow-coated fields along the road. Most people chasing snow in South Africa head for the popular spots where there is often a crowd. But if you're looking for deep snow in places like the Drakensberg, you also risk encountering safety challenges like blocked mountain passes. So, if you're heading for a more isolated or high-altitude place, you'll need to pay extra attention to safety. Always make sure to check weather reports and updates on snow chasing social media communities. In case of emergency, it's recommended that you pack: Extra food and clothes First-aid kit that includes electrolyte replacement options Power bank (phone batteries may die sooner in below-freezing temperatures) Torch and whistle Spade, in case you need to dig out your car Paper map Spare tyre, jack and jumper cables Serious snow chasers in South Africa may want to invest in specialist equipment like two-way radios, a compass and hiking poles. Additionally, Mylar emergency blankets can help protect against prolonged exposure to extreme cold. Furthermore, always remember to tell someone where you're going. Experienced snow chasers recommend that, whenever you get out of your car in an isolated area, you leave a note on your car indicating which direction you've taken. WEATHER: Cold, wet, and windy conditions in the Cape provinces
Cold, wet, and windy weather conditions have been forecast for the Northern and Western Cape from Friday, 6 June, until Monday, 9 June due to a cold front. This is according to an advisory issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS). The weather service said a well-developed cold front is expected to make landfall on Saturday morning, and this system will begin affecting the Western and Northern Cape. By Monday, 9 June, and Tuesday, 10 June, the extensive and severe winter weather system will have shifted further east over South Africa, affecting the central and eastern provinces, SAWS added. 'A significant and dramatic drop in daytime temperatures can be expected over all provinces, with the possible exception of Limpopo. 'Consequently, farmers of small stock are strongly advised to implement appropriate measures to prevent stock losses due to exposure to bitter cold and wind,' the weather service said.
