18 Johannesburg suburbs to be affected by a power outage

City Power Johannesburg has scheduled a planned power outage that is set to affect 18 suburbs in the city on Saturday, 17 May 2025 from 8:00 to 14:30. POWER OUTAGE DUE TO MAINTENANCE WORK The power outage is due to maintenance work that the power utility regularly does on its electricity network. 'The interruption is necessary to do essential maintenance work on our network, which is part of our program of constantly striving to provide a better service,' the statement read. These are the suburbs that will be affected by the power outage on Saturday, 17 May 2025, from 8:00 to 14:30, these are the suburbs affected: Parktown Parktown West Parktown East The Wilds Old Wilds Princess Palace Berea Old Berea Academic Hospital 1, 2, 3 and 4 Isle of Houghton 1 and 2 Melville High Street Mitchel Str and East Ave York Road Girton Road St Andrew Road Wellington Street Hillbrow Eskom has implemented stage-2 load shedding which will run from 16:00 on Tuesday, 13 May 2025, to 22:00 on Thursday, 15 May 2025. The power utility stated that the implementation of load shedding is due to a limited generation capacity that was caused by a delay in return of generation units amounting to over 3 000MW. Additionally, there was a loss of over 1 300MW due to unplanned breakdowns. 'The primary reason for this setback is the delay in returning several units from planned maintenance. These delays, coupled with an unplanned capacity loss that has now temporarily exceeded 13 000MW, align with the risk of scenarios shared in our Winter 2025 Outlook,' explained Eskom. Despite current pressures, Eskom assures that the system is in a stronger position when compared to previous winters. Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
