Prep talk: Division 1 baseball quarterfinals have top matchups
There are four big-time matchups Friday in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division 1 baseball playoffs. The intrigue involves which teams can win with No. 2 pitchers. Top-seeded Corona won with ace Seth Hernandez on Tuesday but now must get past Big VIII League rival Norco on the road with Ethin Bingaman pitching against freshman standout Jordan Ayala. This is the game the Panthers might be most vulnerable. Advertisement St. John Bosco, the Trinity League champion, is playing at Villa Park in a noon matchup. Villa Park defeated Aquinas on Tuesday. Los Alamitos is playing at Santa Margarita in a matchup of teams that didn't win league titles. Mira Costa, with a 26-game winning streak, faces Mission League champion Crespi on the road in a 2:15 start at Hartunian Field. The Celts have No. 2 pitcher Tyler Walton ready to go. The winners advance to Tuesday's semifinals. … The City Section Division III baseball championship will take place Friday at Stengel Field, with University playing Jefferson at 3 p.m. Then the Division II final has Port of Los Angeles playing Chavez at 6 p.m. … Grant Leary of Crespi won the Southern Section individual golf title on Thursday, shooting a 66. Prep talk: Using creativity, Jefferson baseball rises again
For the first time in 100 years, Jefferson High in Los Angeles has converted its football field into a baseball/softball field to allow its teams to play games on campus and have a practice field, thanks to support from its administration and the Los Angeles Unified School District. Jefferson received the No. 1 seed for the City Section Division III baseball playoffs and opens action on Thursday. The softball team is in first place in the Exposition League. The baseball team has had just two winning seasons in the last 21 years and played at a local recreation center that had become increasing difficult to get permits for. With athletic director Jose Fuentes providing support and coaches Humberto Figueroa and Diego Castaneda leading the way, the Democrats have risen to enjoy a memorable season. Third baseman/pitcher Ivan Martinez, shortstop Matthew Lopez, catcher Luis Zaragoza and pitcher Nathan Echeverria have led Jefferson. The school is undergoing modernization with planned baseball and softball fields scheduled to be completed by the end of 2028. For now, they have what Fuentes calls 'their makeshift sandlot.' … The eight-team City Section Open Division baseball playoffs begin Wednesday. Prep talk: Math & College Science Prep is competing for a state title
The City Section has added dozens of charter schools over the last 10 years, and one of those is on the verge of reaching Sacramento to play for a state basketball championship. Math & Science College Prep, which is located on the former grounds of Frederick Douglass elementary school in Los Angeles, plays Diamond Ranch on Tuesday in the Southern California Division V regional final. The winner advances to Sacramento. Coach Christopher White is 27 years old and a former St. Monica assistant who played at Lawndale and for Tim Floyd at Texas El Paso . The team is 25-7 and won the City Section Division III championship. The Sharks start four guards _ Bryan Ruiz, Adan Martinez, Sidney Scott and Sterling Keyser. School enrollment is close to 550, and academics is big. One of White's players, Aldo Rojo, was born in Mexico and takes five Advanced Placement classes with Spanish as his primary language. Last year White had a player with a 4.8 grade-point average. The Sharks were the No. 7 seed, with Diamond Ranch the No. 5 seed. Prep sports roundup: Santa Margarita dominates in win over Harvard-Westlake
In a battle between a 3-0 Trinity League team and a 3-0 Mission League team, Santa Margarita came up with 9-0 victory over Harvard-Westlake on Friday in high school baseball. Brady Schumaker had two hits and two RBIs while pitchers Brennan Bauer and Hayden George combined on a two-hit shutout. Bauer didn't give up any hits in four innings. JSerra 4, Sierra Canyon 2: Otto Graham gave up one hit and struck out six in four scoreless innings for JSerra. Mater Dei 3, Allen (Texas) 2: Brandon Thomas had an RBI double in the eighth inning for the Monarchs (5-0). Los Alamitos 6, La Habra 1: A five-run sixth inning helped Los Alamitos. Sutton Deninno had two RBIs. Cleveland 4, L.A. Roosevelt 2: Joshua Perlstein allowed one hit in six innings for Cleveland. Loyola 8, Cypress 3: Andrew Cohen, Caden Chavez and Robbie O'Rourke combined on six-hitter for Loyola (3-1). Foothill 5, Millikan 4: Sean Green homered had two hits, including a homer, and two RBIs for Foothill. Vista Murrieta 19, San Clemente 4: Vaughn Neckar, Derrick Kraus and RJ Holmes hit home runs while Michael Velardez recorded three hits to lead Vista Murrieta (4-0-1). Neckar had five RBIs. Corona del Mar 5, Dana Hills 3: Stevie Jones threw a complete game for 3-0 Corona del Mar. Vincent Menard had three hits. Arcadia 3, Ganesha 1: Sophomore Tyler Brereton continued his hot hitting with a two-run home run in Arcadia's eight-inning win. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 9, Gahr 4: Jacob Madrid had two hits and four RBIs for Notre Dame. St. Francis 19, Glendale 1: The Golden Knights finished with 18 hits. Dane Shepard had a home run and Landon Pure was three for three. Capistrano Valley 9, Edison 3: Run-scoring singles by JT Flores and Carter Micallef helped Capistrano Valley to victory. Micallef had three hits. JSerra 6, Dana Hills 0: Liliana Escobar struck out 12 and walked none in six innings for JSerra. Pilibos 55, La Mirada 40: Talia Tasbarian scored 13 points for Pilibos in the Southern Section Division 4A championship game. Keppel 49, Cerritos 39: In the Southern Section 3A final, Keppel prevailed. Harbor Teacher Prep 68, Sylmar 44: Munachimso Emegwa scored 35 points in the City Section Division III championship game for Harbor Teacher. Isabella Gonzalez led Sylmar with 22 points. Banning 57, San Fernando 36: Alina Argueta, who was the quarterback for Banning's City Section Open Division championship flag football team, scored 11 points to help the Pilots win the City Division II title in basketball.
