Salem Corporation begins work on construction and demolition waste processing unit
The work for the construction and demolition waste processing unit at Chettichavadi at a cost of ₹3 crore began on Thursday.
Under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) had informed the Salem Corporation in 2022 to submit its action plan to achieve the vision of a garbage-free city in the next five years.
The Salem Corporation prepared a Sanitation Action Plan and a City Solid Waste Action Plan and sent them to the DMA office. After verifying the plans, the DMA gave the nod for a construction and demolition waste processing plant under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The Corporation identified the land at Chettichavadi and got administrative and technical sanction recently. The union government is providing 33% of the funds, the State government 22%, and the remaining 45% is funded by public and private agencies.
At a function held at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College premises on Thursday, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for the plant.
Corporation officials said that the plant will have a capacity to process 50 metric tonnes of waste. It will be built within 12 months. Using the construction and demolition waste, the unit will produce flooring tiles and pavement blocks, officials added.
