Hongkongers warned against consuming Oscar Mayer turkey bacon due to bacteria concerns

Health authorities have urged Hongkongers to avoid consuming certain batches of a pre-packaged turkey bacon product originating from the US due to possible bacterial contamination, after luxury supermarket chain City'super was found to have sold one. The Centre for Food Safety on Thursday night also called on the catering industry and retailers to immediately stop using or selling the batches that might have been contaminated with listeria monocytogenes bacteria. The product, Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon, is available in various sizes – 12oz, 36oz and 48oz – with expiration dates of either August 2 or September 4. A centre spokesman said the US Department of Agriculture had issued a notice indicating that the allegedly contaminated items were being recalled. 'Upon learning of the incident, the Centre for Food Safety immediately followed up on the case. A preliminary investigation found that a vendor, City'super, had sold one of the affected packs [size: 12oz, with a use-by date of July 26, 2025],' the spokesman said. The high-end supermarket chain had stopped product sales and taken packs off its shelves while initiating a recall, he said.

As more Hong Kong restaurants close, landlords must cut rents

Vicious cycles are difficult to break. As Hong Kong scrambles to identify and chip away at factors behind a wave of closures in catering and food production, lowering commercial rents may be a logical next step. A recent high-profile victim of the spiral was City'super's Amazing Food Hall in the upscale Times Square shopping centre and office complex where the company opened its first flagship store in December 1996. Advertisement The pricey yet popular venue was the company's final food court before it closed on June 30. City'super cited changing consumer patterns as a reason for the closure. Struggling retailers have been told to reinvent their offerings so they can better compete, but it is increasingly clear that alone will not be enough. Former Hong Kong leader Leung Chun-ying is among those urging landlords to lower rents. He noted that the city's commercial property vacancy rate was at a 40-year high of 11.8 per cent at the end of 2024 and many building owners have loans tied to the valuation of their properties. But Leung said rather than let space sit vacant, landlords must 'face the reality' and procrastination would 'only make businesses dry up'. Advertisement The Hong Kong Retail Management Association said landlords were generally willing to discuss lease renewals, but retailers find most offers insufficient. The Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades said some landlords had reduced rents, but operators still face much higher costs than their mainland counterparts.

Citysuper's food court in Times Square closes its doors, as supermarket group cites ‘changes in consumer patterns'

Citysuper's food court in Times Square has closed its doors after almost 30 years in business following 'changes in consumer patterns,' according to the supermarket group. The food court, located at the basement level of Causeway Bay's Times Square mall, saw its last day of operation on Saturday. In an email to HKFP, Citysuper said Amazing Food Hall would be closed from Monday onwards, with the area being returned to the landlord. 'This decision follows changes in consumer patterns and our long-term portfolio strategy,' the email read. 'Parts of our [food and beverage] sections will undergo renovation with seating area, and we aim to reopen in mid-September,' the supermarket group added. Opened in 1996 as part of the high-end Citysuper supermarket, the food court served a variety of international cuisines in addition to local food court staples such as noodles and grilled meats. The Citysuper food court in Times Square was the last one remaining of the brand. In 2021, the food court in Tsim Sha Tsui's Harbour City shopping mall shut at the end of its lease. The supermarket also had food courts in the APM mall in Kwun Tong and PopCorn, a shopping mall in Tseung Kwan O, but they have also since closed. The news follows a string of closures in Hong Kong's food and beverage sector, which has struggled to recover since Covid-19 took a hit on the economy. Last week, leading Hong Kong bakery chain Taipan Bread & Cakes shut down all of its stores, ending 41 years in operation. Earlier this month, catering group King Parrot also closed.

Hong Kong high-end supermarket chain City'super to shut its last food court

Luxury supermarket chain City'super is closing its last remaining food court in Hong Kong's Times Square shopping centre, as the city's sluggish economy continues to take a toll on the catering and food production sectors. Advertisement The Amazing Food Hall in the upscale mall and office complex in Causeway Bay will be closed from June 30, with the space returned to the landlord upon lease renewal, a spokeswoman said on Thursday. The closure means City'super will no longer operate any food courts after the company shut its 22-year-old CookedDeli food hall in Harbour City, a shopping complex in Tsim Sha Tsui, in February last year, following the expiration of its lease. A City'super spokeswoman said the decision to close the food court – which currently offers items such as sushi, grilled meat and noodle dishes, alongside a wine and sake cellar – was made in light of changing consumer patterns and the chain's long-term portfolio strategy. The food and drink section of the adjacent supermarket in Times Square would be renovated to include a new seating area and was expected to reopen by mid-September, she added. Advertisement But the company did not specify how many staff members would be affected by the closure or the terms of their severance packages. A worker at the food hall said dozens of staff were affected and that the company did not offer any help in relocating to other positions.
