Excellent Educators is a WAVY-TV 10 initiative to celebrate local teachers who have gone above and beyond for their students and communities during the last academic year. These Excellent Educators were nominated by their school divisions. Congratulations to these educators for all of their hard work and accomplishments! CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Throughout the month of May, 10 On Your Side is highlighting teachers in our area for our Excellent Educators series. In Chesapeake, we were introduced to Kaitlyn Gabriel. In 2025, she was named teacher of the year for both Oscar Smith Middle School and for the entire school district. View all of the nominated educators She teaches Civics and Economics to 6th graders at the middle school. Even though she struggled in school herself, she knew she wanted to be a teacher since Kindergarten. During WAVY's visit to Gabriel's classroom, she turned the Civics lesson into a secret agent style investigation. She is known to occasionally dress in costume for lessons, even if it makes driving to work a little embarrassing. Known to many students as Ms. Gabe, she started teaching in 2019, right before the COVID pandemic. 'Never really got a normal year and I think that's kind of a blessing, because it's made me a better teacher,' Gabriel said. 'All of the cool lessons I have come up with and the way that I have evolved as a teacher wouldn't have really happened without those learning gaps. Police in Ottawa have issued a warning to vehicle owners after a recent spike in overnight airbag thefts from late-model Honda Civics. Ottawa police said during the week of April 14, officers received more than a dozen reports of airbags being stolen from Civics parked outside in the city's east end. They said in every incident, the vehicles 'appeared largely undamaged' and no other items were reported missing by the majority of complainants. Most complainants also confirmed that their vehicle's doors were locked at the time of the theft,' police said. Airbag thefts from Honda Civic vehicles have been on the rise. Last year, Guelph police reported that at least 10 Honda Civics had had their airbags stolen. There has recently been a demand for these airbags, giving thieves an incentive due to the high resale value on the black market amid low inventory as Civics are popular vehicles. Story continues below advertisement Police are encouraging vehicle owners to park indoors if possible or in well-lit areas, consider using a wheel lock, install an alarm system or dash cam and be alert for signs of tampering. 'The average price for all new cars is about $49,000, so even without tariffs, U.S.-built vehicles already carry a premium — and tariffs may only widen that gap,' said David Greene, an industry analyst with Greene noted that most budget-friendly cars on the market are manufactured outside the U.S. 'Only three sub-$30,00 models are currently built in the U.S. — the Honda Civic (Greensburg, Indiana), Toyota Corolla (Blue Springs, Mississippi), and the soon-to-be discontinued Chevrolet Malibu (Kansas City, Kansas) — although it's worth noting that almost half of Civics are imported from Canada, and about a quarter of Corollas come from Japan,' he said. 'With such a limited domestic footprint — and thin profit margins on these models — automakers may follow the same playbook they used during the chip shortage: Prioritize higher-margin trims and scale back or shelve affordable options.' It seems inevitable that car prices will increase in the near future, so Greene recommended buying a new car ASAP. 'If car shoppers are even thinking about buying in the next few months, it's smart to act sooner rather than later,' he said. 'Most vehicles currently on dealer lots haven't been impacted by tariffs, and with around 78 days' worth of inventory available, shoppers still have a decent shot at finding what they want — at prices that haven't yet absorbed new import costs.' However, this window to buy existing new cars won't stay open for very long, Greene said. 'As tariff-impacted vehicles start to arrive, prices are likely to rise — even on cars assembled in the U.S.,' he said. 'That's because most vehicles built here still rely heavily on globally sourced parts.
