Malaria cases in city touch10-year high: MCD data
Reported cases of vector-borne diseases have seen a jump this year according to early trends, as Delhi has so far recorded 124 malaria cases, the highest in the last decade. The number of dengue cases till July 28 too stood at 277, which is the second highest in the last five years in the corresponding period, according to Municipal Corporation of Delhi data. According to experts, an above-average rainfall this July and subsequent waterlogging have likely contributed to the increase in the cases of dengue and malaria. (FILE) This comes amid a surge in the number of identified mosquito breeding sites having larvae — 9,117 more such sites were detected in the last seven days alone, which is more than a tenth of the overall number of sites (89,030) detected between January and July, MCD said in its report. To be sure, the weekly case count on dengue and malaria cases is still low. According to experts, while mosquito breeding is common in monsoon months, an above-average rainfall this July with multiple moderate to heavy spells and subsequent, lasting waterlogging across the city have likely contributed to the increase in this phenomenon. MCD has directed hospitals to reserve beds for patients to tackle the rise in cases of the two diseases. Delhi added 16 new dengue cases in the past week, while 12 malaria cases were reported in the period. The number of dengue cases till July 28 in 2024 was 284, 116 cases in 2023, 57 cases in 2022 and 29 cases in 2021. The number of malaria cases for the same period in 2024 was 106, 40 cases in 2023, 25 in 2022 and 15 cases in 2021. The geographical distribution of dengue cases this year shows that the maximum number of cases have been reported from Central zone (38), followed by West zone (30), Civil Lines (29 cases) and Rohini, Shahdara, and South with 26 cases each. Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. While most infected people do not develop symptoms, those who do typically experience high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. Most recover within 1-2 weeks, but severe cases can be fatal due to haemorrhagic fever, which causes internal bleeding. The mosquito causing dengue breeds in clear water and waterlogged areas and the primary method of preventing the dengue is through breeding site reduction. Delhi in July has received 259.3mm rainfall against the normal monthly average 209.7mm. Meanwhile, civic officials said that the increased dengue cases count can be attributed to improved data collection from hospitals. MCD is actively taking several measures to prevent and treat mosquito-borne diseases, which also includes chikungunya, said standing committee chairperson Satya Sharma. 'Hindu Rao Hospital, Swami Dayanand Hospital, and Kasturba Hospital have been declared as Sentinel Surveillance Hospitals for the treatment of mosquito-borne diseases. These hospitals have been equipped with special facilities — 70 beds have been reserved at Hindu Rao Hospital, 22 beds at Swami Dayanand Hospital, and 75 beds at Kasturba Hospital,' Sharma said.'All hospitals have already been directed to remain fully prepared for any emergency,' she said in a statement.

Inspector linked to Chhangur Baba, charged withshielding conversion racket accused; suspended
Lucknow: Ghaziabad Crime Branch Inspector, Abdul Rahman Siddiqui, was suspended on Wednesday evening for allegedly shielding Badr Akhtar Siddiqui, a key accused in the 2019 abduction and religious conversion of a Hindu air hostess trainee in Meerut. The case is now linked to the Chhangur Baba-led conversion syndicate under ATS probe. Inspector Siddiqui, promoted in 2021, held unusually long postings — over three years at Civil Lines in Meerut and two years in Ghaziabad's Crime Branch. Despite being awarded for "exemplary service" on Republic Day last year, internal probes have now revealed serious misconduct. ATS findings, backed by digital evidence, show Badr Akhtar was part of the Chhangur Baba network. In 2019, the 21-year-old Delhi-based air hostess trainee went missing after being allegedly lured by Badr—then a gym trainer—with promises of a job in Dubai. Her family claims she was forcibly converted, abused, and married off after coming under the influence of Chhangur Baba. On Oct 24, 2019, she was allegedly abducted from her Ghaziabad home in a car. Despite complaints, inspector Siddiqui neither filed an FIR nor acted, allegedly threatening the family instead. Additional CP Ghaziabad, Alok Priyadarshi, confirmed Siddiqui's suspension. Senior officials in UP police said that investigators also found evidence of a prior connection between the inspector and Badr Akhtar, leading to deliberate suppression of the case.

Ludhiana: Gunshot fired at witness' home ahead of testimony
The Jawahar Nagar locality witnessed a tense morning on Tuesday following a shooting incident at the home of a key witness in the 2020 murder case of hotelier Harjinder Singh Jindi. As many as two unidentified men on a scooter reportedly fired a gunshot at the residence of Kanwaljit Kumar in Jawahar Nagar. The incident, which is suspected to be an attempt to intimidate the witness before his court testimony on July 22, has raised serious concerns about witness security. Police investigating the spot where the firing incident took place in Ludhiana's Jawahar Nagar on Tuesday. (HT Photo) According to the police, the firing occurred around 1.45 am. The bullet struck the main gate of Kumar's residence and a .32 bore shell was recovered from the scene. CCTV footage from the vicinity captured the assailants' faces, who have since been identified as Manya and Varun, residents of the same area. Their associate, Aman Sharma, is also accused of conducting a recce of the house prior to the incident. ACP (Civil Lines) Guriqbal Singh confirmed the involvement of the three suspects and stated that a case has been registered against them. 'Manya was the one who fired the shot while riding the scooter. Aman Sharma assisted in the planning. We will arrest them soon,' said the ACP. Kanwaljit Kumar, the victim, firmly believes the attack is linked to the murder of his brother, Harjinder Singh Jindi, who was gunned down in the Jawahar Nagar market in January 2020. The main accused in that case, notorious criminal Sukhwinder Singh alias Moni, is currently lodged in jail. Kumar claimed that Moni has been sending threats through his aides to stop him from testifying. 'I won't be intimidated,' Kumar asserted. 'The police have assured me of protection on the court date.' Kumar's son, Naveen, also revealed that the same accused had earlier hurled glass bottles at their home during New Year celebrations, but no complaint was filed after the accused's family intervened and apologised. Police say the motive appears clear but will be confirmed after the suspects are apprehended.
