COPA investigating shooting by police in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood
A person was shot by Chicago police early Saturday morning in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood after allegedly striking an officer with a red pick up truck, according to Chicago police. Police said that around 2:10 a.m. on Saturday officers responded to a call of a battery in progress and shots fired at a business establishment in the 3100 block of North Central Avenue. An employee told officers that during a large fight outside of the business, a person fired a gun. The employee directed police to the suspect, a 28-year-old man, who was getting into a red pickup truck. As police approached the truck and ordered the suspect to step out, police said that the suspect refused and allegedly struck an officer with the vehicle, police said. Officers then fired their weapons at the vehicle as it fled the scene. Responding officers found the truck in the 3200 block of North Menard Avenue in Portage Park, where the suspect, apparently struck by the officers' gunfire, was found on the ground near the vehicle. The suspect sustained gunshot wounds to the body and was transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition. A weapon allegedly was found inside the suspect's vehicle. Police said that the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the specifics of the shooting. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.

As officers approached on foot and ordered the man out of the vehicle. He refused and accelerated the vehicle in their direction, hitting an officer. The officers then fired their weapons at the truck as it continued to leave the scene. Responding officers found the truck in the 3200 block of North Menard Avenue, where the man, who had been hit by the officers' gunfire, was on the ground near the vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds to his body. Officers immediately rendered aid until EMS arrived. He was treated and taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition. Police said a weapon was recovered from inside the truck. The Investigative Response Team is investigating the circumstances involving the incident. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the specifics of the incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department. COPA investigating after Chicago police officer shoots man running with gun on West Side
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating after Chicago police say officers shot a man Saturday night who was running away from a crowd, with a gun in his hand. It happened just after 10:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of North Austin Avenue. A source said the incident started near a music studio on the west side, where police and fire crews get frequent calls. Chicago police said officers responded to a call for service. Upon arrival, officers broke up a large crowd at the scene. During this, a man took off running in the opposite direction. Officers pursued the man who they say turned on officers with a firearm in his hand. One of the officers fired their weapon, hitting the man in the legs and hand. He was taken to Loyola Hospital in fair condition. A source with the Chicago Fire Department said he is 21 years old and was shot four times. A weapon was recovered on the scene. An officer was taken to an area hospital for observation.
