Man facing charges after bank robbery in Russell Township, police say

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Spencer Colby A 40-year-old Clarence-Rockland man is facing charges in connection to a bank robbery in Russell Township. Ontario Provincial Police say officers responded to a call for a robbery in progress at a bank on Concession Street just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. 'The male had fled before officers arrived,' police said on X. 'Witnesses were able to provide a detailed description of the robber, and the vehicle used to flee the scene.' The OPP says when an officer attempted to stop the vehicle a few minutes later, 'the driver deliberately collided with the cruiser at low speed.' The suspect drove off but was stopped just before 10:30 a.m. on Highway 417, police said. Police say the suspect is facing charges of robbery with violence, dangerous operation, mischief under $5,000 and two counts of flight from a peace officer. The suspect will appear in court for a bail hearing on Thursday.

OPP investigating body pulled from Ottawa River as homicide

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating the death of a 63-year-old man whose body was found in the Ottawa River last weekend as a homicide. Police pulled the man's body out of the water near Dallaire Street in Clarence-Rockland around 5:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports from the public. Dallaire Street is about 40 kilometres northeast of Parliament Hill. In a news release Friday, OPP identified Robert Prevost as the victim of a suspected homicide. Prevost had last been seen in February and was reported missing in March.

(Source: OPP Central Region) Ontario Provincial Police say an 18-year-old and three other young people from Quebec have been arrested and charged following a reported vehicle theft in Clarence-Rockland. Police said the incident happened Monday. Several witnesses reported a vehicle being stolen from a parking lot at around 8 a.m. 'Witnesses provided accurate details that were crucial to the investigation,' the OPP said. 'Members from both Russell County OPP and the Hawkesbury OPP coordinated their efforts and located the stolen vehicle at approximately 8:15 a.m. The driver was arrested at the scene.' Four people are facing charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a device for the purpose of committing theft, and possession of break-in instruments. Three of the accused are under 18. An 18-year-old from Terrebonne, Que. is also facing a charge of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. All four have been released from custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in L'Orignal on an unspecified date.

Police say officers responded to reports that a body had been located in the Ottawa River offshore from the Dellaire Street area at approximately 5:30 p.m. Saturday. There is no indication of any threat to public safety, police said in a news release Monday. The person has not identified. 'Residents may notice an increased police presence in the vicinity as the investigation continues,' police say. Investigators continue to investigate to determine who the person was.
