Killarney's St Pauls basketball club signs three players ahead of new season
Point guard Steve Kelly comes to Killarney off the back of a stellar final season at Edinboro College. He finished the season with 385 points, leading to a game average of 13.7, and also contributed four assists per game. These stats demonstrate his ability to both create and convert scoring opportunities. A proficient defender, Kelly's relentless ball pressure makes opposing players uncomfortable and his ability to create turnovers means he can dictate the pace on both ends of the floor. A native of Whitman, Massachusetts, he played for Clarion University prior to his time at Edinboro. Meanwhile, Samuel Grant, standing at 6ft 9 inches, will bring his considerable height to the St Pauls line up and comes with a strong reputation having represented England at U-15 level and Great Britain at U-16, 18 and 20 level. Though his size should make him primarily an inside player, he actually has an impressive outside shot, something which helps him to regularly contribute 20-plus points in games. Grant attended the University of Sioux Falls the last two college seasons and previous to that he played for the Florida Institute of Technology. A native of Wellingborough in North Northamptonshire, he majored in accounting, and he worked under highly rated Kerry native Alan Keane when at Reading. Kelly and Grant will arrive in Killarney in plenty time for the start of the new season which commences on the first weekend in October. Meanwhile, Lovisa Hevinder will become the first female Swede to ply their trade in Killarney as the Stockholm native makes the move to Super League runner-up Utiliity Trust St Pauls. Hevinder comes to the league via the University of Texas at Tyler Athletics where she spent her college career. Indeed, on February 1 this year she set a new record for the Patriots, when she netted her 213th three-pointer in their win over Oklahoma Christian. She was a regular starter in her final year where she contributed 7.2 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game and dished out 82 assists, an accumulation of four years of effort. This was duly recognised as she was named to the LSC Athletic Performance All Conference Team. She has represented her native Sweden at underage level and memorably played a leading role in their U-16 European championship win in 2018. Standing at just over six feet, Hevinder will be looking to bring her height and athleticism to the fore in the forward position. She will join fellow new signings Maisie Burnham and Tara Cousins in due course before the start of the Women's Super League season in October.
