Patients still feeling impacts after Kettering Health cyberattack; ways to protect your information
Patients are still feeling the impact after a cyber attack caused system-wide issues at Kettering Health on Tuesday. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] As reported on News Center 7 at 6, procedures are being evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Care teams are calling patients and working to reschedule procedures. According to Kettering Health, patients with appointments should assume their appointments are happening. Patients will be contacted if their appointments need to be rescheduled. News Center 7 attempted to call two Kettering Health locations but were unable to get through to anyone. They said those details are being communicated to local emergency responders. Other area hospitals are seeing an increase in their number of patients because of the closure. GDAHA said the increases are manageable, but patients may see higher wait times. News Center 7 asked Kettering Health questions, including how employees are getting paid during the outage, a timeline for when elective surgeries will resume, and if people's information has been compromised. At the time of reporting, we have not received a response. Consumer Advisor Clark Howard said patients should already be taking steps toward damage control. 'If you're thinking, oh no, I was there. I gave them my Social Security number. Or you're not sure in any case, you need to run, not walk today to freeze your credit,' Howard said. He emphasized that freezing your credit is not permanent. 'You have to go through an extra validation process where you temporarily thaw your file so that an application for credit can go through,' Howard said. We will continue to follow this story. ‘Biophilic' Serenbe community in Chattahoochee Hills proposes $1.7 billion expansion
A 1,200 acre community in Chattahoochee Hills is pushing for expansion. Serenbe, a self-described biophilic community which began construction in 2004, is working to expand its size with a $1.7 billion proposal. As far as what biophilic means, regarding architecture, it refers to communities planned around connecting with other people and nature, as well as proximity to greenspaces. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The community itself says its biophilic approach includes 'four keys to saving the planet: personal wellbeing, community engagement, national security, and global balance.' According to development documents filed with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Serenbe's developers want to add 1,700 new residences, new commercial properties and more. As proposed, Serenbe would be adding 235,000 square feet of commercial space, 180 hotel rooms, a 450 student school and 74,700 square feet of civic space. The Serenbe community says that since it first began building and selling homes in its area, they've grown to be the home of 1,000 residents. For the new development, Serenbe said in documents that it would be creating a new mixed-use project, with housing, restaurants, retail, institutional and service uses on a 1,532 acre property, which the application says is 'mostly forested.' The exact location Serenbe would be developing is at Hutcheson Ferry Road and Atlanta Newnan Road within the City of Chattahoochee Hills. Coweta County Schools targeted by ‘apparent cyberattack,' incident under investigation
The Coweta County School System announced that its computer network had been targeted in an apparent cyberattack on Friday night. According to the district, the incident is now under investigation by its security partners and was reported to the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency. As a result of the 'intrusion,' the district said some of its network processes 'will be hampered in the coming days, and school system employees have been advised not to access desktop devices while the matter is being investigated.' Milestones Testing will also proceed as planned on Tuesday, officials said. What Clark Howard says borrowers need to know 'Many basic school operations - including student Chromebook access and use, Wi-Fi access and phones - have not been impeded by this situation,' the district said. Officials added that it did not appear any personal information was compromised during the reported intrusion, though the investigation is ongoing. Officials said the system was alerted to unauthorized network activity on Friday night around 7 p.m. When the intrusion was found, the IT department and security partners immediately took the system offline to stop the activity and find the source. Now, access to the school system's internal network will be restricted as authorities investigate and monitor the situation. Forest Park announces data breach, warns of potential for private information being compromised
The City of Forest Park announced Tuesday that they had been hit with a network disruption and unauthorized access to private information back in July 2024. City officials said they performed a full investigation completed March 10 and learned some personal information 'kept in the normal course of business may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party.' That includes first and last name in combination with Social Security numbers, driver's license information, date of birth, passport number and state ID numbers. They took steps to secure their network and hired a third-party forensic firm to investigate the incident but said it's possible some of the private information may have been compromised. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] 'Although the forensic investigation could not rule out the possibility that an unknown actor may have accessed this information, there is no indication whatsoever that any information has been misused at this time,' city officials said in a statement. The city said they were notifying people who may be affected by mail, if it has their addresses on file. 'Although Forest Park has no evidence of actual misuse of information as a result of this incident, individuals are nonetheless encouraged to monitor their account statements and explanation of benefits forms for suspicious activity and to detect errors,' the city said. For those who may be impacted and want to contact major credit agencies to place a fraud alert on their credit report, the following phone numbers are available: Equifax: 888-378-4329 TransUnion: 833-395-6938 Experian 888-397-3472 Forest Park has also set up a call center to answer questions about the incident. The center can be called Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 1-800-939-4170. In the meantime, city officials are urging residents to be vigilant in case of identity theft and fraud by reviewing credit reports and account statements and being on the lookout for suspicious activity or errors. Fairburn family becomes new homeowner thanks to Habitat for Humanity and Channel 2′s Clark Howard
A South Fulton County family now has the keys to their brand new Habitat for Humanity home. It's the 102nd home that Channel 2 consumer adviser Clark Howard has sponsored. Right after receiving the keys to his new house, Marquez Hurley told Channel 2, 'I feel great, it's a good feeling. I can't really explain the feeling but it's a great feeling knowing that this is my forever home.' It was a moment that the father of two sons fought hard to achieve through Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. He put in 255 volunteer hours so he can call the home on Aderhold Street in Fairburn his own. 'It was a journey. It wasn't a bad journey, it was a good journey ... with doing my classes, on top of my classes, my sweat equity hours,' Hurley said. 'Just being able to be a part of building my home made it more special. I was actually able to put hands into my first home.' It's his first and forever home. 'Family, opportunity, permanence, having a place to raise your kids.' The house was built over eight weeks. Marquez also received a starter tool kit as a gift.
