Netflix fans left ‘on the edge of their seats' by new crime thriller - raving over ‘shocking and brilliantly executed twist' that no-one saw coming

Netflix fans have been left 'on the edge of their seats' by a new crime thriller - raving over a 'shocking and brilliantly executed twist' that no one saw coming. Sara: Woman In The Shadows follows former secret agent Sara (Teresa Saponangelo) who leaps back into action after her son's tragic death in suspicious circumstances. The Italian-language six-part series, added to the streamer on Tuesday, is based on a series of crime novels by prolific Italian thriller writer Maurizio de Giovanni. It also stars Claudia Gerini - who played crime boss Gianna D'Antonio in John Wick: Chapter 2 - as Sara's old colleague Teresa, who agrees to help her investigate. With the programme climbing to number seven on Netflix's TV chart, just a day after its release, fans took to X to say how gripping they found the thriller series. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. One user said: 'The ending of Sara: Woman In The Shadows leaves viewers on the edge of their seats. 'The twist is both shocking and brilliantly executed, tying up loose ends while leaving room for reflection on Sara's journey. 'A must-watch for crime drama enthusiasts!' Another added: 'Sara: Woman In The Shadows, what a beautiful series.' Sara's flawless intelligence work, including being able to lip-read, sees her dubbed 'the invisible woman' in the series - which critics also found thrilling to see in action. Time Magazine said: 'Sara: Woman In The Shadows ends with the promise that as long as injustice exists, there will be those who fight - and that true justice is born in the hands of those who refuse to give up.' Similarly, review site Ready Steady Cut added: 'This is six dense episodes of grounded and compelling procedural spycraft enhanced by an unconventional lead and a willingness to meet its underlying themes and ideas halfway.' Meanwhile, pop culture title Midgard Times said: 'Sara: Woman in the Shadows emerges as an intelligent thriller that gives us emotional theatrics along with psychological complexity.' With the programme climbing to number seven on Netflix's TV chart, just a day after its release, fans took to X to say how gripping they found the thriller series The character of Sara Morozzi was first introduced by prolific Italian crime writer Maurizio in 2018, with his novel Sara Al Tramonto (Sara At Sunset). She soon proved a standout among his protagonists, as an older, more withdrawn and highly intelligent character. The set of novels about Sara marks the third of his book series to have been adapted into Italian TV shows, with this show filmed across Rome and Naples. The TV programme draws some several books in the series about her, rather than following one individual text. Speaking to Italian publication Il Recensore, Maurizio said: 'Sara is back, and it has always been my favourite series... 'Writing about her is always an intense experience, because Sara has a rare superpower: to listen.' And actress Teresa, who plays Sara, has spoken about taking on the role to Italian title Il Mattino: 'She worked for years in the secret services and has the gift of being able to read lips, so the less she stands out, the better she conducts her investigations. 'She is an observer, who remains in the shadows, investigates laterally, in silence. She is shy, does not expose herself, tends to subtract rather than add, always working by subtraction both in her private and working life.' The success of the Italian crime drama now on Netflix follows the popularity of another on the platform from closer to home - hailed as 'pure greatness' by fans. Scottish drama Dept Q sees cranky detective Carl Morck, played by Matthew Goode, attempt to solve Edinburgh's cold cases from a shabby office. The nine-part series also features The Queen's Gambit's Chloe Pirrie and Guilt star Jamie Sives. It has proved a hit with fans, climbing the charts and racking up an impressive 81 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans have taken to social media with praise as one posted to X: 'Dept Q on Netflix is such a good crime thriller. 'Matthew Goode's acting was next level! I hope they make season two of this series.'

Netflix's new crime thriller show sounds like a compelling binge-watch — and you can stream it now

Netflix is constantly adding new international shows to its lineup, but sometimes the quieter releases can slip through the cracks, especially when bigger titles are dominating the spotlight. 'Sara - Woman in the Shadows,' an Italian crime thriller that just dropped today (June 3), feels like one of those shows that might surprise you. Claudia Gerini, known for her role in 'John Wick: Chapter 2', joins forces with Teresa Saponangelo, star of 'The Hand of God,' in this new series helmed by Carmine Elia — the director behind acclaimed shows such as 'The Red Door' and 'The Sea Beyond.' Based on Maurizio de Giovanni's popular crime novel series 'Le indagini di Sara' ('The Investigations of Sara'), the show centers on a former intelligence agent with exceptional observational skills, drawn back into a dangerous world after her son's mysterious death. The books have been praised for their clever storytelling, rich character development, and exploration of heavy themes like grief. With just six episodes, 'Sara - Woman in the Shadows' seems like a compact, emotionally charged thriller that could be a great addition to your Netflix queue. Here's everything to know about it. 'Sara - Woman in the Shadows' follows Sara (Teresa Saponangelo), a former internal secret service agent known as 'the invisible woman' for her unmatched skill in the field. Once a legend, she's now withdrawn and living in isolation until the sudden, suspicious death of her son pulls her back into a world she thought she'd left behind. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Desperate for answers, Sara turns to her old friend and former colleague, Teresa (Claudia Gerini), for help. But nothing in her world comes without a cost. As she digs deeper into the investigation, she uncovers unsettling truths about the son she barely knew and in doing so, is forced to confront ghosts from her own past. Flavio Furno plays Pardo, a dedicated police officer involved in the investigation. Chiara Celotto alsoo stars as Viola, a photographer who is also the pregnant partner of Sara's son. It's still too early to say whether 'Sara - Woman in the Shadows' is a must-watch, since there aren't many reviews yet and it doesn't have a Rotten Tomatoes score. However, based on the trailer and premise, it seems to offer plenty of mystery for fans who enjoy piecing together clues as the plot unfolds. 'Sara - Woman in the Shadows' appears to have all the key elements for a gripping thriller, too. At its core, it's a character-driven story about a former secret service agent navigating a dangerous world while unraveling personal and professional mysteries tied to her past. With just six episodes, it's perfect for those who prefer shorter series. And, like many international shows, it's often best experienced with subtitles to fully appreciate the original performances and emotional nuance. The vibe and tone are also reminiscent of other Netflix originals like 'The Åre Murders' and 'The Glass Dome,' so fans of those shows might find 'Sara - Woman in the Shadows' especially appealing. If you enjoy mystery-driven stories and want a compact series to binge, this could be a great addition to your Netflix queue. But if it's not grabbing you right now, there are plenty of other new releases to explore this June 2025. Stream 'Sara - Woman in the Shadows' on Netflix now.
