New changes coming to Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii
HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii Ceremony is less than two weeks away. The annual event, typically held on Memorial Day, will be held at Ala Moana Beach Park.
The ceremony is free and open to the general public, with a goal to bring together communities from around the world in honor of fallen service members and loved ones.
Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii makes annual return
According to Clayton Taniyama, Shinnyo-en Hawaii staff, 6,000 candle-lit lanterns bearing remembrances, prayers and affirmations to perpetuate the goodness of those being remembered are set afloat at sunset by ceremony volunteers and the general public.
Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawai'i hopes to connect the community by offering a space, physical and emotional, for residents and visitors to experience a sense of comfort, connection, hope and can be made online through May 25 at 11:59 p.m.
Taniyama said families and groups interested in floating an individual lantern during the ceremony will be able to pick up a complimentary lantern at Ala Moana Beach on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26.
Lanterns will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Lantern Request Tent from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or when all lanterns are distributed.
Taniyama said this year, they will have a dedicated line for military personnel to recognize the sacrifices and service of our armed forces while providing a meaningful way for them to participate in this cherished event.
Participants will just need to show a valid military ID.
