During the offseason, one of the Washington Commanders' biggest splashes was acquiring wide receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers. Before training camp gets underway, one trainer spoke out about the growing narrative surrounding the veteran wideout. As he prepares for his first season with a new team, Samuel was present for OTAs and minicamp. While there, clips of him running routes went viral online. Many called him out for his running and physical appearance, stating that he looked overweight. Since minicamp, countless people in and around the league have taken shots at Samuel over his conditioning. Upon having the chance to speak about the topic, his trainer quickly shut down any notion that he isn't ready to go for the 2025 campaign. He also dove into why the Commanders' new addition looked different from what many are accustomed to seeing in regards to physical appearance. "Most of my guys, they're a little bit bigger in those early offseason phases," Hill said. "They're not running as much. We're not doing as much sprint work or cardio, that's when they're putting on a bit more the media hasn't seen a lot of him in those months training because he's training with me usually. So I think that fluctuation, which is totally normal for us, and is not out of the ordinary, was just new from a media standpoint." When it comes to being ready for his first training camp with the Commanders, Hill praised the work Samuel has been putting in behind the scenes. "We're going at 6:00 in the morning every day right now," Hill continued. "He goes 6:00 in the morning, he has a speed and power lift session with me. He does an afternoon cardio session. Then he runs routes later in the evening. So he's going two, three sessions a day." However, based on Hill's confident remarks, it appears he's poised to bounce back with the Commanders. 49ers Star Comes to Defense of Commander WR Amid Online Criticism

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. During the offseason, the Washington Commanders made a big splash by trading for wide receiver Deebo Samuel. This move was initially met with hype, as the Pro-Bowler is forming a high-level WR duo with Terry McLaurin and joining forces with quarterback Jayden Daniels. However, critics have tried to dampen things after certain footage surfaced online. In the midst of minicamp, a clip went viral online of Samuel running passing routes. Many called him out for the speed he was moving around at, with others calling him out for not being in shape. As this discourse continues, one of Samuel's former teammates spoke up and came to his defense. Earlier this week, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was a guest on the Bussin' With the Boys podcast. He covered an array of topics, including one of his top offensive weapons being traded in the offseason. Purdy even touched on what people have been saying about Samuel online, saying that such a narrative shouldn't be bought into. You could be in a walkthrough, going half-speed and all that, and they blow it out of proportion," Purdy said. "I know when the season comes rolling around, too, Deebo is going to have a chip on his shoulder this year for sure, and he's going to be just fine." Based on how Purdy talked about Samuel in his appearance, it's clear the two built a strong connection during their time together with the 49ers. Though the wideout's numbers slowly decreased over the years, his quarterback is still a strong supporter of his abilities on the field. Unfortunately for Purdy, he now has to continue his career without one of his strongest connections. If he can put together a strong showing in his first training camp with the Commanders, it should quickly quiet his critics. Heading into his first year with Washington, Samuel has a chance to help get the young up-and-coming team over the hump. Depending on how things unfold regarding McLaurin and his contract holdout, he could also be a prominent component of the offense to open the 2025 campaign. Between a down year in 2024 and all the criticism about him online, Samuel has all the motivation he needs to hit the ground running with the Commanders.
