Atletico Madrid ‘warned off' signing key defensive target
Diego Simeone is ready to launch a summer squad rebuild following Atletico Madrid's FIFA Club World Cup exit. Los Rojiblancos were dumped out in the group stages following a poor showing in the USA earlier this month. Advertisement Simeone's charges will now head away on their summer breaks but the Argentinian coach is already planning for next season. Defence is rumoured to be a key area of focus for Simeone despite completing a permanent deal for France international Clement Lenglet from Barcelona. Atletico Madrid have been linked with several targets but interest in Bayer Leverkusen centre back Piero Hincapie has been rejected by the German club at this stage. Premier League side fire Atletico Madrid transfer warning Simeone remains keen on a move for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero after admitting he is a big fan of his fellow countryman. Advertisement Spurs' victory in the UEFA Europa League final has given the club a back door route into the Champions League next season and bolstered their finances in the process. Image via James Gill – Danehouse/Getty Images The pressure to sell Romero is now reduced and new boss Thomas Frank is keen to retain Romero alongside Micky van de Ven as his first choice centre back pairing as part of his bold plans for the squad. Tottenham set Romero asking price to Atletico Madrid As per the latest update from the Daily Telegraph, Tottenham will not be 'bullied' into accepting any offers that fall below their current transfer valuation of the 27-year-old. Advertisement Frank and the Spurs hierarchy will push for a minimum of £60m and they will only accept if Romero indicates his desire to leave North London for Madrid in July. The Premier League side could also have an extra incentive to retain Romero, with doubts growing over captain Son Heung-min staying beyond the summer, and they could offer the former Atalanta defender the armband for the 2025/26 campaign.

Former Premier League star, 29, gets Club World Cup's first red card… after referee forgets he'd been booked
FORMER Tottenham and Aston Villa star Clement Lenglet received the first red card of the Club World Cup — despite the referee forgetting he had already been booked. Lenglet, 29, lined up for Atletico Madrid in their heavy 4-0 defeat to newly crowned Champions League kings Paris Saint-Germain. 4 4 The 16-time France defender had only just completed a permanent move to Atletico from Barcelona after a season-long loan move. But Lenglet's time against PSG ended in disaster when he was given his marching orders during the second half. With the score at 2-0 and 13 minutes left on the clock, Lenglet began to argue with Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs after a minor decision went against Atleti. The official was having none of it though and quickly brandished a yellow card. However, Kovacs had seemingly forgotten that he had already booked Lenglet earlier in the match, leaving fans and pundits stunned. He was quickly made aware of the incorrect decision though. And after a minute, Kovacs returned to Lenglet before producing a red card. Fans were quick to react though, with many criticising Kovacs. One said: 'The ref in this game has been something else.' Another declared: 'Worst I've ever seen.' Lionel Messi appears to headbutt Club World Cup opponent as tempers flare in Inter Miami's opening match 4 4 One noted: 'Bro this ref.' Another added: 'Referee needs to be questioned.' Lenglet will now miss Atletico's next game against Seattle Sounders. But he will be able to play in the final group match against Brazilian champions Botafogo, with the winner likely to claim second spot behind an unstoppable-looking PSG side. Lenglet is best known to Premier League fans for underwhelming loans at Tottenham and Villa. He made 35 appearances for Spurs during the 2022/23 season, with the Londoners opting against making his move permanent. Lenglet then spent the following campaign at Aston Villa, but failed to impress in 25 outings.

Video: Club World Cup sees its first red card - but only after referee FORGOT he had already booked Atletico Madrid defender as PSG win 4-0
Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain began their Club World Cup campaign with style as they beat 10-man Atletico Madrid 4-0. Clement Lenglet became the first player to receive a red card in this year's competition in the 78th minute, but he nearly escaped his marching orders when the referee seemed to forget giving him a previous yellow. The Atletico defender did eventually see red, with the Spanish side conceding a further two goals in his absence. You can catch all the action from the Club World Cup free on DAZN
