Fire activity closes Highway 141

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – The Mesa County Sheriff's Office announced Highway 141 closed around 2 p.m., Monday, due to fire activity from two wildfires near Gateway. MCSO asked the community to avoid using the highway 'in any capacity unless leaving the pre-evacuation and evacuation zones as to allow fire crews to continue vital fire suppression and prevention work.' Around 3:50 p.m., Monday, evacuations orders were given to all private land and areas between mile markers 128 and 131 on Highway 141. According to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit (UCRIFM), the Turner Gulch Fire is 1,470 acres while the Wright Draw Fire was at 249 acres as of Monday afternoon. There is an evacuation center for residents displayed by the fire at the Clifton Community Campus, 3270 D 1/2 Road in Clifton. This isn't an overnight shelter, but evacuees will be assessed for needs and given resources. Anyone who needs help securing their large animals, call 970-778-0161. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Turner Gulch Fire spreads to over 8,000 acres in only a few hours

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – The Turner Gulch Fire grew exponentially Monday as it spread 8 miles to the east in a few hours and is now mapped at 8,140 acres. The wildfire, which was caused by lightning on July 10 outside of Gateway near Highway 141, has worsened in part due to extreme drought conditions and hot, dry weather. The steep terrain has also proved to be a challenge for firefighters. According to the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team (RMIMT), fire managers are assessing the fire on Tuesday to find opportunities to stop the spread of the fire. But the day before, crews secured a portion of the fireline on the west side of the blaze to protect values at risk. Meanwhile, the Wright Draw Fire is at 341 acres. Firefighters are assessing the wildfire and looking to keep it on the mesa and away from the canyon. RMIMT stated crews are also scouting the north of the fire to find containment opportunities and look for any values that may be at risk. Evacuation orders were put in place along Highway 141. Around noon, Tuesday, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office announced evacuations for all private land and areas between mile markers 131 and 134 along Highway 141. An evacuation center for residents affected by the fire can be found at the Clifton Community Campus, 3270 D 1/2 Road in Clifton. This isn't an overnight shelter, but evacuees will be assessed for needs and given resources. Anyone who needs help securing their large animals, call 970-778-0161. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
