Popular locomotive to return to Welshpool & Llanfair railway

A popular locomotive is returning to the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway. The Manning Wardle 1877, which used to take passengers on the Welshpool railway, will take part in the annual Steam & Diesel Gala. The locomotive, built in 1915, was originally intended for service in Kent and spent 11 years on the Welshpool line from 2010. It has also spent time in Romania, having become a significant attraction at the Sibiu Agnita Railway, an enthusiast project supported by UK railway enthusiasts. Now back on familiar tracks, Manning Wardle 1877 will join resident steam and diesel locomotives. Promising families and enthusiasts an action-packed timetable across the three days from August 29 to August 31. This year's Gala is also planned to feature visiting diesel DL-34, on loan from the Alishan Forest Railway in Taiwan, which for many, will be the first time they've seen it run. True to tradition, the Gala will offer a mix of attractions, from classic cars and a model railway exhibition at Welshpool's display sheds to various steam and vintage transport exhibitions at Llanfair. The event will also feature the Cloverlands Model Car Museum at Llanfair. August 30 will mark a revitalised Garden Railway Show at Llanfair High School. Organised by two railway members, the show will display various layouts that mostly run live-steam models, with more than 30 traders expected. The show has its own entry fee – £6 per adult and £3 for those under 16. However, Gala Rover travel ticket holders for Saturday have free access. Teddy bear picnic brings free travel to Welshpool railway

Children bringing their teddy bears to Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway this weekend can ride for free. The popular family-themed Teddy Bears Picnic event will take place on July 12 and 13, offering a variety of attractions. As well as free travel for children accompanied by a fare-paying adult, the event features a Teddy Trail, Ted's Story Time, a chance to meet the railway's own Teddy Bear family, and a Name the Bear competition. At Llanfair Caereinion, the tearoom, shop, Connections Visitor Centre, and the Cloverlands Model Car Museum will be open. The museum boasts a collection of more than 8,000 model cars. The free travel offer is valid on any train service over the weekend. Return trains will be pulled by the railway's fleet of steam or heritage diesel locomotives. They depart from Llanfair Caereinion at 10.30am, 12pm, 1.45pm, and 3.30pm, and from Welshpool Raven Square at 11.45am and 1.30pm. The line is expected to be busy, so travellers and their teddies are encouraged to book in advance.
