'You Wussed Out': David Mamet Reveals Trump's 20-Minute Call After He Committed A MAGA Sin
Pulitzer Prize-winning screenwriter David Mamet has recalled once receiving a lengthy phone call from Donald Trump after he dared not to go all in on the then-former president's 2020 election conspiracy theories. Trump loyalist Mamet, appearing on Bill Maher's 'Club Random Podcast' this week, remembered being 'kind of iffy' about whether the election had been stolen from Trump during an appearance on Maher's HBO show, 'Real Time.' At 8 a.m. the following day, the Hollywood veteran said he received a call from Trump who told him: 'I saw you on Bill Maher yesterday, you were great. But you wussed out on the question of the stolen election.' Trump then 'talked to me for like 20 minutes about how the election was stolen,' Mamet told Maher. 'But it wasn't,' Maher reminded him. Mamet, a yearslong vocal critic of progressive causes who has called former President Barack Obama a 'tyrant' and described diversity, equity and inclusion efforts as 'garbage,' responded: 'Well, I think it was.' Maher noted how the claim that the election was rigged for now-former President Joe Biden has fallen flat in dozens of court cases, been dismissed by Trump's own commissioners and analysts have described the 2020 vote as 'the most fair, honest election we've ever had.' Mamet argued Trump would have won by a majority had various issues not been suppressed. 'Oh, please. That's so ridiculous,' said Maher, who doubted they would have swung the result. During the episode that aired Feb. 16, Hanks was introduced as a contestant alongside Leslie Jones as Shanice, Tracy Morgan as Darius and Eddie Murphy as Tracy Morgan. 'Speaking of church, can I say something?' Hanks asked. 'If more folks went to church, we wouldn't be in this mess we're in now.' Thompson, who played the role of game show host Darnell Hayes, agreed with Hanks and offered to shake his hand. 'Don't like that,' Hanks said as he backed away in fear. 'Whoa, whoa, whoa!' Thompson reassured Hanks that it was 'just a handshake' and they shook hands. Your noon-hour look at what's happening in Toronto and beyond. During Maher's Club Random Podcast which aired Sunday, guest Jillian Michaels spoke about supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump and how they are still referred to as 'deplorables' nine years after Hillary Clinton made that disparaging remark about conservative voters. 'Listen, I've met Tom Hanks a couple of times, and he was very kind and very lovely, and his wife was exceptionally lovely,' the fitness trainer and nutritionist said. 'But when he was on Saturday Night Live ….' Maher interjected and said he agreed with Michaels. RECOMMENDED VIDEO 'I hated it, too, and I said it on my show,' Maher said. 'I know. I hated it. Wearing the MAGA hat, not shaking hands with a Black person. And that's when I thought, 'You people don't know MAGA people.'' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. While he has issues with some racist Trump supporters, Maher said painting all MAGA followers with the same brush 'is not helping.' 'I mean, of course, there's some racists everywhere who are that bad,' he said. 'But generally, all the MAGA people I know have no problem shaking hands with a Black person. You're just hysterical, and you're not helping. That was not helping.' Maher continued by ripping 'SNL' writers for what he called a 'zombie lie,' a claim that is disproven but continues to persist. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'But mostly what I hate is, it's what I call a zombie lie. Don't lie to me. It's a lie that MAGA people won't shake hands with — I get it, it's part of a skit, and it's an exaggeration, and that's comedy — it's a little too delicate a subject to just make, to go there for that one. Look, we all in comedy step over the line sometimes or do one that they want to take back.' However, he said the premise of the character offended him. 'But I'm telling you, as a liberal, I don't like it,' he said. 'Again, because lying offends me. I'm a comedian. When the premise isn't real, I can't go with — the joke is not gonna work. The premise has to ring true. That premise doesn't ring true. It might have rang true, I don't know, X years ago. It doesn't now.' Club Random Podcast Though Robinson, 85, asked Howard to play him, the actor said he was in the midst of a 'conversation with Lee Daniels about playing Marvin Gaye.' Maher, 69, argued that the narrative of the 'Sexual Healing' hitmaker's life was 'much more interesting' than Robinson's, and that Howard 'would've been perfect as Marvin Gaye, and that is a story that needs to be told.' However, Howard — who starred on Daniels' TV series 'Empire' — grew cold on Daniels' biopic after a conversation with legendary record producer Quincy Jones. 9 Though Robinson, 85, asked him to play him, Howard said he was in the midst of a 'conversation with Lee Daniels about playing Marvin Gaye.' Maher laughed off the hyperbole of Howard's remark. 'I would not do that. It does not make me homophobic to not want to kiss a man,' the former 'Politically Incorrect' MC said. 'Do what you love to do but don't aim it at me. And I can't play that character 100 percent. I can't surrender myself to a place that I don't understand,' Howard went on. During his brief life, Gaye did not come out as either gay or bisexual, and there are scant few accounts claiming he shared sexual or romantic relationships with other men. Jones, however, did imply that the 'Let's Get It On' singer had a dalliance with Marlon Brando. 'He was the most charming motherf—ker you ever met,' Jones said of the 'Godfather' star in a 2018 interview with Vulture. 'He'd f—k anything. Anything! He'd f—k a mailbox. James Baldwin. Richard Pryor. Marvin Gaye,' he added.
