Far North vintage car club celebrates 50 years of classic motoring

An old classroom was offered in 1984 with the proviso it had to be taken smartly, so it was dismantled, transported and reassembled at the current site as the club 'shed'. By 1987 after many working bees, it became the clubrooms, with power and basic cooking facilities. Over the years the kitchen was upgraded, ablution facilities were added and a well-stocked parts shed and library established, making a substantial base from which many activities were organised. It was the base for monthly meetings, road rallies, restoration sessions, social functions and a home for vintage enthusiasts, with membership growing to about 100. Long-standing member Dave Duirs said the club grew from small beginnings, even being involved with the 1977 reenactment of the 1917 parliamentary tour. In more recent times the club has run a very successful car show, the Autospectacular, which continues to be a major fundraiser for the club. Duirs said the 50th anniversary celebrations were a hit. A special 50th cake was cut by founding members Winston and Peter Matthews. 'A small group did the planning with huge energy and enthusiasm and a larger group joined the working bees to prepare the clubrooms. Windows were cleaned, the deck restained, the parts shed tidied up, old pictures coordinated for a continuous slide show, the flagpole restored and given a 50th flag.' 'The tables were set with white linen freshly ironed at the club and a gold runner and real flowers added a professional touch. Balloons were blown up by three old fellows with some difficulty (yes we had a pump) and a display of old newsletters showed how production technology has advanced from photocopying to digital. To top it off, a beautiful 50th cake looked too good to eat.' He added that there was a hive of activity on the day, which included the annual prizegiving, 'with perhaps the highlight being the presentation of the Clubman of the Year to Margaret Ilton for her outstanding energy and sense of duty in doing so much, particularly for the celebration'. Guests arrived from all over the land, including as far south as Rangiora, sharing memories and catching up before founding members Winston and Peter Matthews cut the celebratory cake. 'Like many clubs we are in the situation where participating membership is an issue. But in the last few years we have been fortunate to gain a good number of, dare I say younger, but very positive and active folk who contributed hugely to our celebration but also participate with the general running of the club and its activities. Hopefully we have many more years of historic motoring and camaraderie.'

Released City midfielder Olly Dyson pens permanent Spennymoor contract

RELEASED York City midfielder Olly Dyson has penned a permanent contract with Spennymoor Town. Dyson's time as a York player was confirmed to be ending after a near-five year spell with the Minstermen, which started in September 2020. Advertisement He initially joined the club from Huddersfield Town, and played a major part in the City team that gained promotion from the Enterprise National League North in the 2021/22 season. Whilst with York in the Enterprise National League, Dyson would impress in their debut campaign back in the fifth tier. The midfielder would go on to make 42 appearances, scoring four goals, before being named as York's Clubman of the Year. A turbulent 2023/24 season for City would see game time become somewhat limited for Dyson, as he made 23 appearances under three different managers across the campaign. Dyson would also have a brief spell on loan at Scarborough Athletic, which was ended early due to a foot injury. Advertisement After returning to York under manager Adam Hinshelwood, Dyson would spend the entirety of the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Spennymoor Town in the National League North, where he established himself as a crowd favourite. The 25-year-old made 45 appearances for Spennymoor, playing at both right-back and in midfield, and had the opportunity to play at Wembley Stadium in the Isuzu FA Trophy final. Whilst with Spennymoor, Dyson added to his personal trophy cabinet, scooping up both the supporters and management staff's Player of the Season awards. In total, Dyson made over 100 appearances for the Minstermen, and also earned a call-up to the England C squad during the 2022/23 season. Advertisement Spennymoor manager Graeme Lee commented on the club website: 'I'm absolutely delighted that Olly is joining us permanently. 'Everyone knows how important he was for us in our successes last season, and we were determined to do everything we could to keep him at the Football Club. 'Not only was he an asset to us on the pitch, but Olly is also a great lad to have around the place and his attitude to his training and playing is first class. 'He deserved the accolades he got last year because of his consistent performances in whatever position he played, and we're excited to see him continue that into 2025/26. Advertisement 'Things are coming together for us now in terms of the squad and this was a key piece of business for us – and one we want to build on now.' On his York departure, Dyson wrote on social media: "My time at York City FC has come to an end. "I came as a 19 year old boy and I now leave six years later with the most amazing memories and achievements I could ever of wished for. "Thank you to all the players, managers, staff and most importantly the fans of the past and present for making the club my home. "I know last year was a disappointing one on a personal note but that doesn't take away everything we achieved together over the years. "I wish the club all the success in the future. Thank you."

Olly Dyson also announces City departure after five seasons

OLLY Dyson has become the second player of the day to announce his departure from York City. Dyson, similarly to defender Adam Crookes, has confirmed on social media that he will be leaving the football club upon the expiry of his current contract. The 25-year-old midfielder initially joined York in September 2020 from Huddersfield Town, and was a part of the City team that gained promotion from the National League North in the 2021/22 season. Dyson would remain with the Minstermen in their debut season back in the National League, and would go on to be named as York's Clubman of the Year after 42 appearances, scoring four goals. Unfortunately for Dyson, game time would become more limited in a hectic season for City, with three different managers in the same campaign seeing the midfielder make 23 appearances. He would have a brief spell on loan at Scarborough Athletic too, which was somewhat disrupted by injury. Dyson spent the entirety of the 2024/25 season on loan with Spennymoor Town in the National League North, appearing 45 times and even playing at Wembley Stadium for the Isuzu FA Trophy final. The now former York midfielder also earned an international call-up when representing England C during the 2022/23 season, as well as making over 100 appearances for the Minstermen. Dyson wrote on social media platform X: "My time at York City FC has come to an end. Thank you." — Olly Dyson (@Olly_Dyson32) May 27, 2025
