Kishan Reddy demands proper maintenance of streetlights
Union Minister of Coal and Mines and Telangana BJP president G. Kishan Reddy on Tuesday accused the State government of neglecting basic civic amenities in the twin cities, citing widespread complaints about non-functional streetlights and irregular drinking water supply. Speaking to the media after meeting with colony welfare associations and slum dwellers in areas such as Jubilee Hills, Vengal Rao Nagar and Srinagar Colony, the Secunderabad MP said residents voiced a range of concerns, including power issues, damaged internal roads and poor sewerage infrastructure. Mr. Kishan Reddy said non-functioning streetlights appear to be a common issue across all areas, with no resolution in sight. He claimed that officials cited a shortage of funds as the reason. Criticising the poor state of civic amenities in the capital region, he said it reflects the inefficiency of the Congress government. He also mocked the idea of a command control room when basic infrastructure, such as CCTV installation in colonies, is pending. He urged the government to take immediate steps to restore street lighting and ensure CCTV connectivity to help prevent crimes such as chain snatching and eve teasing. Engineering seats In a separate press meet, ST Morcha president Kalyan Nayak has urged the state council of higher education to take action against 17 engineering colleges for not following the rule of reservation in Category 'B' (management) and Category 'C' (NRI quota). Instead, the colleges concerned have been charging hefty fees from SC/ST students, he added. The government has failed in allotting proper land for setting up of a sewage treatment plant or dump yard in municipalities, as a result of which it has been unable to take advantage of the Centre's grants, bemoaned MLC Anji Reddy.

India produces 2.6% more coal in May at 86 million tonnes, shows data
India produced 86.2 million tonnes (MT) of coal in May, marking a 2.6 per cent increase compared to the same month last year. The growth in both production and dispatch ensures a steady coal supply to key industries such as power, steel, and cement, the Ministry of Coal said in a statement. Higher coal production is particularly important during the summer months, when electricity demand rises significantly due to higher temperatures and increased use of cooling systems. India, which relies heavily on coal for power generation, typically sees demand surge during this period. This year, India is expected to face peak power demand of around 277 gigawatts (GW) during the summer, particularly in May and June—a significant increase from the 250 GW recorded last year. However, heatwaves have been largely absent in some parts of the country, especially in Delhi, which last year saw temperatures nearing 50 degrees Celsius and peak power demand. Power consumption in May dipped over 4 per cent to 148.71 billion units compared to the same month a year ago, owing to the early arrival of the monsoon and unseasonal rains. To ensure sufficient supply, a coal stock of 50 MT has been built up at thermal power plants (TPPs), and projected coal demand for FY26 is 906 MT, Minister of Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy said in February. As of May 31, coal companies had a stock of 122.7 MT, compared to 94.98 MT during the same period last year.

Two potash blocks auctioned for the first time in India: Kishan Reddy
Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy said that for the first time, India has paved the way for 'Potash Mining', taking taking a bold leap towards self-reliance in fertiliser minerals under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that by unlocking the potential of potash mining, 'we are set to reduce import dependence and strengthen the backbone of our agriculture and our farmers.' Kishan Reddy's comments on Tuesday come in the context of the recent Tranche V auction of critical and strategic mineral blocks, launched on January 28, concluding with the successful auction of 10 out of the 15 blocks offered. These 10 blocks include critical and strategic minerals such as graphite, phosphorite, phosphate, rare earth elements (REE), vanadium, and, for the first time, potash and halite. The blocks are located across Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. With this auction, the total number of blocks auctioned by the Central Government has reached 34. The Union Minister said that a key milestone in Tranche V is the successful auction of a potash block, marking the first time the Government of India has auctioned a potash block. This development is expected to stimulate potash mining in the country reduce reliance on imports, and provide stronger support to the agriculture sector. Additionally, this auction marks the first successful auction of a critical and strategic mineral block in the state of Rajasthan. To date, a total of 34 blocks have been successfully auctioned in five tranches out of a total of 55 critical mineral blocks that were made available for auction. The regular auctioning of critical mineral blocks is a vital part of the strategy adopted by the Ministry of Mines to promote self-sufficiency in critical minerals within the country. The Ministry of Mines is also focused on exploring critical minerals. It has launched the National Critical Mineral Mission to develop a sustainable critical mineral ecosystem in India. The Ministry recognises the valuable participation of industry stakeholders in both the auctions and other initiatives aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in critical minerals.
