Father and son rescued after boat sinks off Virginia Beach coast
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Coast Guard rescued a father and son 34 miles southwest of Virginia Beach Thursday morning. 30-year-old Jeffery Hudson was rescued alongside his father 60-year-old Robert Hudson after their sporting boat began to take on water, causing the boat to sink. At 9:07 a.m. Thursday, Coast Guard Sector Virginia Command Center watchstanders received a distress call from the crew of the 57-foot sport fisher boat Turn Me Loose, reporting their vessel was sinking and they were abandoning ship into their life raft. The watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast (UMIB) which led to the dispatch of a 45-foot Response Boat (Coast Guard Station Little Creek), a Jayhawk helicopter crew (Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City MH-60), and patrol (USCGC Pompano WPD 87339). The crew of USCGC Calhoun (WMSL 759) and Virginia Beach Fire Boat 12 also responded after hearing the UMIB. The Coast Guard was able to pinpoint the location with the boaters' help. At 10:03 a.m., the Calhoun crew and a rescue helicopter arrived on scene to find the two men in a life raft. The Calhoun crew brought the men to safety and determined neither had any injuries. The men were ultimately brought to Virginia Beach Fire Boat 12, where they were reunited with their family. 'This successful rescue highlights the importance of preparedness and the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between multiple agencies and assets,' said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Daniel Butierries, Sector Virginia command duty officer. 'The quick response and the mariners' preparedness significantly contributed to the rescue.' The Turn Me Loose remains partially submerged approximately 30 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. The Coast Guard has issued a broadcast notice to advise mariners to avoid the submerged object. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Coast Guard shuts down 12 illegal charters in Florida, including 70-foot yacht
Related video: 3 boaters rescued after boat capsizes off Captiva Island MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) — Law enforcement officers with the Coast Guard Sector in Miami shut down 12 illegal charters in Biscayne Bay and the Miami River over the weekend. A 70-foot motor yacht, Indigo, and a 52-foot cabin cruiser, Second Wind, were among the boats cited. The owners of Indigo were reportedly operating as an illegal charter with 11 passengers for hire. The Coast Guard said the vessel was violating a Captain of the Port Order issued in May 2023 for operating as a bareboat charter without a choice of crew. The owners of Second Wind were also operating illegally with 13 passengers, violating a similar order from January 2023, the Coast Guard said. 'Passenger vessel regulations are set standards for the safety of the crews, their passengers and the public around them,' said Lt. j.g. Jasmine Smith, a Coast Guard investigating officer at Sector Miami. 'Mariners in control of charter vessels should meet the regulatory safety standards and understand the consequences of disregarding safety violations. At the end of the day, we want the public to have a safe and enjoyable time on the water by complying with state and federal regulations.' The Coast Guard said those found in violation of Captain of the Port Order could face penalties up to $117,608 per day and potential felony charges, which could result in up to six years in prison and up to $500,000 in fines. Other violations included failure to have proper licensing, required safety equipment and drug and alcohol testing programs. The Coast Guard urged passengers to verify that their captains have proper credentials and a safety plan before booking charters. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. A fourth person is presumed dead after a boat sank off the coast of New York City
NEW YORK — Three people died and a fourth person is presumed dead after a boat sank off the coast of New York City, authorities said Monday. Two others were hospitalized. The U.S. Coast Guard called off its search around 6 p.m. Monday after failing to locate 52-year-old Vernon Glasford, of the Bronx, the last of the six people who were aboard the Grady White. The 30-foot vessel went down 5 miles southeast of Breezy Point, Queens, after taking on water around noon Sunday during a recreational fishing excursion, the Coast Guard said. 'We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Vernon Glasford,' said Capt. Jonathan Andrechik, the commander of Coast Guard Sector New York. 'The decision to suspend a search is always difficult. Though our active search has ended, our support and sympathy remain with all those impacted by this tragic incident.' The water temperature in the search area was about 38 degrees Fahrenheit. The other people aboard the boat were located Sunday. A Coast Guard boat crew recovered three people, a Coast Guard air crew recovered one person, and a New York City police aviation crew recovered another person. Four were unresponsive, the Coast Guard said. The NYPD said Monday morning that the hospitalized people were in critical condition and stable condition. The search covered approximately 842 square miles over the course of 30 hours and involved helicopters, planes, ships and small boats, the Coast Guard said.
