Video shows Coast Guard rescuing 3 from capsized vessel on Lake Michigan in Sturgeon Bay
United States Coast Guard crews rescued three people from a capsized vessel on Lake Michigan on Monday. Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes received a call around 1:27 p.m. Monday of a capsized 16-foot vessel with three people in the water in Sturgeon Bay. A small boat crew from the St. Ignace Coast Guard Station and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City responded to the rescue. Members of the helicopter crew rescued three from the water, while the station crew confirmed that there was no debris, hazards or pollution to navigate, officials said. The three were taken to Pellston Regional Airport, where they were then transferred to EMS for further medical evaluation. "The crew operated with outstanding teamwork, which is a result of the numerous hours spent training alongside station personnel and assets like Station St. Ignace for moments like these," said Lt. j.g. Nicholas Betts, Air Station Traverse City Public Affairs Officer. "Thanks to the survivors for wearing life jackets — which made locating and rescuing them far more efficient — the crews were able to save three lives today."

Lake Tahoe boat accident death toll rises to 7
Seven people are now confirmed dead and one remains missing after a 27-foot powerboat capsized during a violent storm on Lake Tahoe Saturday afternoon, marking the region's deadliest boating accident in recent memory. Authorities recovered the body of one of the missing individuals late Sunday, according to a Monday morning update from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. Dive teams from El Dorado, Washoe, and San Joaquin County sheriff's departments continued searching Monday for the eighth and final missing passenger. Two people survived and were hospitalized with hypothermia and other injuries. The boat, a Chris-Craft Launch 27, sank around 3 p.m. near D.L. Bliss State Park on the lake's southwest shore. It was carrying 10 people when a fast-moving squall swept in, generating 8-foot waves and wind gusts over 35 mph. The vessel was quickly overwhelmed and sank in deep water. 'The identifications of the deceased from this terrible incident will not be released until proper notifications have been made,' the sheriff's office said. 'Suspending a search is always a difficult decision to make and weighs heavily on each Coast Guard member involved,' said Cmdr. David Herndon, search and rescue mission coordinator with Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those involved in the boat capsize.' Saturday's storm struck with little warning, catching even experienced boaters by surprise and triggering widespread damage across Lake Tahoe's marinas and shoreline. Chris Williams, a party boat operator with Tahoe Sports, said his crews battled waves they had 'never seen on Lake Tahoe' while returning clients safely to shore. Two of the company's boats broke free from their moorings and washed ashore, though Williams said both are salvageable. Elsewhere, vessels were left wrecked or sunken, particularly near Camp Richardson Marina, where at least two boats were submerged and several others washed up outside the Grove Beach Bar & Grill. Lake Tahoe resident Chad Shelton told the Chronicle was surprised to hear that a Chris-Craft Launch 27 — a high-performance model not typically rented out — had gone down near Rooster Rock, a deep-water area with a steep drop-off. Boaters across the lake recounted harrowing escapes. One family narrowly reached shore after abandoning attempts to dock, while a group of women celebrating a bachelorette party described the ordeal as 'terrifying.' Longtime residents said the signs were there for those watching the skies, and warned that mountain weather can change rapidly.

Father and son rescued after boat sinks off Virginia Beach coast
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Coast Guard rescued a father and son 34 miles southwest of Virginia Beach Thursday morning. 30-year-old Jeffery Hudson was rescued alongside his father 60-year-old Robert Hudson after their sporting boat began to take on water, causing the boat to sink. At 9:07 a.m. Thursday, Coast Guard Sector Virginia Command Center watchstanders received a distress call from the crew of the 57-foot sport fisher boat Turn Me Loose, reporting their vessel was sinking and they were abandoning ship into their life raft. The watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast (UMIB) which led to the dispatch of a 45-foot Response Boat (Coast Guard Station Little Creek), a Jayhawk helicopter crew (Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City MH-60), and patrol (USCGC Pompano WPD 87339). The crew of USCGC Calhoun (WMSL 759) and Virginia Beach Fire Boat 12 also responded after hearing the UMIB. The Coast Guard was able to pinpoint the location with the boaters' help. At 10:03 a.m., the Calhoun crew and a rescue helicopter arrived on scene to find the two men in a life raft. The Calhoun crew brought the men to safety and determined neither had any injuries. The men were ultimately brought to Virginia Beach Fire Boat 12, where they were reunited with their family. 'This successful rescue highlights the importance of preparedness and the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between multiple agencies and assets,' said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Daniel Butierries, Sector Virginia command duty officer. 'The quick response and the mariners' preparedness significantly contributed to the rescue.' The Turn Me Loose remains partially submerged approximately 30 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. The Coast Guard has issued a broadcast notice to advise mariners to avoid the submerged object. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Several People Hospitalized In Florida After Coast Guard Responds To Separate Holiday Boating Incidents During the exercise, four phosphorus pyrotechnics that were deployed did not activate when entering the water, according to officials.
