Stranded whale rescued along Philippine coastline in Agusan del Norte

Personnel from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources rescuing a stranded and wounded short-finned pilot whale found on the shoreline of Magallanes, Agusan del Norte on Aug 9, 2025. - BFAR-13 BUTUAN CITY: The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the Caraga Region (BFAR-13) reported the rescue of a stranded short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) on the coastline of Magallanes, Agusan del Norte over the weekend. In its report on Monday (Aug 11), the BFAR-13 said residents of coastal Barangay Buhang spotted the stranded marine mammal on the morning of Aug 9. The villagers immediately reported the matter to the Coast Guard Station, Municipal Agriculture Office, and BFAR-13 for proper action. 'The 3.63-metre and 300-kilogram whale was visibly weak, leaning on its right side, and unable to stay upright without support when the responders arrived,' the BFAR-13 said. The marine mammal also bore multiple fresh wounds, which were likely from collisions with structures in the docking area. 'An older wound near its blowhole with a remnant of a suspected spear gun tip lodged inside was also discovered during the examination,' the BFAR-13 said. A veterinarian among the responders carefully removed the foreign object from the old wound. 'Due to the strong currents in the area, the rescuers transported the whale to Barangay Caloc for a safer release,' the agency said. The whale later regained strength, exhibited normal breathing patterns, and maintained an upright position before being released back into the sea. The BFAR-13 urged the public to report similar incidents to authorities immediately to help ensure the safety and survival of stranded marine animals. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

Proposed air enclave a work in progress, set to boost Coast Guard's capabilities: DG S. Paramesh

Coast Guard Director General S. Paramesh on Saturday described the long-pending proposal for an air enclave for the maritime law enforcement agency in Thiruvananthapuram as a 'work in progress.' Once all the approvals are secured and it gets commissioned, the enclave will give a fillip to the Coast Guard's charter of duties including search and rescue (SAR) operations in the southern region, he said. According to him, the enclave will permanently station helicopters, considerably enhancing operational preparedness and response to emergencies out at sea. 'Fixed-wing aircraft can come here on detachment and operate from here,' the Flag Officer told The Hindu on Saturday after inaugurating a new, 76.7-m-long jetty for Coast Guard vessels at Vizhinjam. Although the Coast Guard Station at Vizhinjam is equipped with fast patrol vessels and interceptor boats, air support has to come from Kochi, where the Coast Guard has its regional headquarters. The commissioning of a major seaport at Vizhinjam, SAR related to fishing vessels and maritime emergencies such as the recent sinking of the container ship MSC Elsa underscore the need for the increased presence of the Coast Guard in the southern part of Kerala. Expanded Coast Guard presence in Thiruvananthapuram district will definitely help during incidents such as the sinking of MSC Elsa since it is the first responder to maritime emergencies, Mr. Paramesh said. 'It (the sinking of MSC Elsa) is a very unfortunate incident. The matter is being investigated by the Director General Shipping. Once they finish the investigation, we will come to know the reasons that caused the ship to flounder and sink,' he said. The new Coast Guard jetty at Vizhinjam is expected to enhance the Coast Guard's operational preparedness significantly, the Flag Officer said. The construction of the jetty, though started in September 2019, had been delayed on account of the presence of a half-submerged tug at the was resumed in April 2024.

Missing boater, dog rescued by Coast Guard near Catalina Island

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a missing boater and a dog off the coast of Catalina Island on Saturday evening. According to a U.S. Coast Guard press release, a good Samaritan put in a distress call around 8 p.m. reporting that his friend and their dog were missing and had last been seen four to five hours earlier before they allegedly fell asleep. While the vessel was unable to communicate directly with the Coast Guard, it was able to relay information through a marine assistance service, TowBoatUS Ventura, officials said. 'Dinnertime burglaries' on the rise in affluent Southern California community Search and rescue coordination was led by a boat crew from the Coast Guard Station Los Angeles and an air crew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego, and the air unit was the first to spot the missing boater and dog in a dinghy approximately 18 miles east of Avalon. 'The individual was reported to have mild hypothermia but no major medical concerns,' Coast Guard officials said. An assisting local agency, BayWatch Cabrillo, rescued the boater and transported them to shore where they were treated by paramedics. The condition of the dog was not disclosed.
