Boost your roses' growth and longevity with three kitchen scraps this July

Roses are in full bloom now that summer has arrived, but there is a simple way to get healthier and more vibrant flowers by feeding them the right fertiliser Roses are now in full bloom with the arrival of summer - and there's a straightforward method to nurture healthier and more vibrant blooms by providing them with the appropriate fertiliser. The optimal time to fertilise roses is early July, during their peak blooming season. This replenishes the nutrients they require to boost flower production and withstand the heat. However, you don't need to splash out to enhance your roses. Kelly, a gardening enthusiast and founder of My Soulful Home, has revealed that you can nourish your flowers using simple kitchen waste. Kelly stated: "Want a lush and lovely garden without spending a dime on fertiliser, slug protection & compost? ‌ READ MORE: Huge Amazon Prime Day sale slashes Coco & Eve's 'best tanner on the market' by 30% "Well, have a banana an egg and a cup of coffee for breakfast." It might sound odd, but banana skins, coffee grounds, and egg shells can be transformed into a highly effective homemade fertiliser. This will provide roses with the nutrients they need for longer-lasting blooms, reports the Express. ‌ Why should you feed roses a homemade fertiliser? Kelly explained: "Banana peels add phosphorus and potassium to the soil. Both are essential to a healthy plant. Potassium is responsible for the formation of new flower buds. "Your roses in particular will want a bunch of bananas and you will want a bunch of rose buds." Egg shells are an excellent source of calcium, which helps prevent diseases such as blossom end rot and contributes to the overall structure of the plant. ‌ Coffee grounds can do wonders for roses by providing nitrogen, which is vital for the growth of foliage and the overall well-being of the plant. This DIY fertiliser not only nourishes roses with essential nutrients but also serves as an effective method to repel slugs, which detest both the strong aroma and gritty texture of coffee. Kelly explained: "Sprinkling the grinds on top of the soil may also deter slugs and snails...[they] don't like the feeling of sliding over the grinds." ‌ How to make a homemade fertiliser for roses Firstly, wash the eggshells thoroughly to eliminate any remnants of yolk and leave them to air dry in a separate container. After the eggshells are dry, crush them into small pieces and mix the majority of them with banana peels and coffee grounds in a container. Reserve some of the crushed eggshells to scatter around your roses, creating a barrier that slugs won't cross due to the sharpness of the shells. ‌ Next, store the concocted fertiliser in a ziplock bag within the fridge until you're ready to use it, then bury the homemade blend close to the roots of your rose bushes to feed them. Kelly shared: "My secret garden tips are to cut up the peel, crush the shells scoop together the grinds and work all three into the soil under and around your plants. "Toss the secret trio into a container before you mix in the planting soil. Each will act as a slow-release fertiliser, pest deterrent and soil amendment." However, as with any fertiliser, gardeners should be mindful that overfertilising roses can result in excessive foliage growth. This means less energy is directed towards flower production, potentially leading to weak blooms or an unhealthy plant. To prevent this, it's recommended to apply this homemade fertiliser just once in midsummer to enhance blooming, and then keep a close eye on the roses after application. This straightforward fertiliser is a brilliant method to reduce food waste and save on gardening supplies, while also promoting larger, more plentiful and healthier rose blossoms this summer.

'Underrated' Greek island is 'cheaper' version of Santorini with less crowds

Paros is a Greek island that has been dubbed an 'underrated' alternative to Santorini - and it could also be more affordable for Brits looking for a Greek getaway Gazing out towards the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea lies Paros, situated within the Cyclades archipelago approximately 43 nautical miles from Santorini. This Greek isle has increasingly become the go-to destination for travellers seeking the Santorini experience without the eye-watering costs typically attached. Research conducted by Compare the Market's credit card division reveals that Britons could slash their daily holiday expenses by roughly 33 percent by choosing Paros over Santorini. Their analysis, which factored in average accommodation, meal, and activity costs, discovered that tourists generally fork out about £272 per person daily in Santorini. ‌ READ MORE: Huge Amazon Prime Day sale slashes Coco & Eve's 'best tanner on the market' by 30% In contrast, they calculated that visitors to Paros spend considerably less, with daily costs averaging £183 per person. Condé Nast Traveller has previously dubbed Paros an "underrated" Greek destination, whilst Expedia Group's Unpack '24 travel trends report revealed that flight enquiries for Paros surged by 193 percent in 2023. ‌ Travellers typically reach Paros via ferry connections from neighbouring Greek destinations such as Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos and Crete. Throughout the peak summer period, ferry timetables expand to cater for increased tourist demand. Alternatively, visitors can catch flights from Athens. For British holidaymakers, this involves an initial flight to Athens followed by a connecting journey. Paros Airport (PAS) operates domestic services from Athens International Airport. The airport is situated approximately 10km from Parikia, in the Kampos region. ‌ Many holidaymakers relish the opportunity to include Paros in their island-hopping itinerary, enabling them to experience multiple Greek islands in a single journey. While Paros may not be as bustling with tourists as Santorini, it certainly doesn't lack in exquisite hotels or delightful restaurants, reports the Express. Take the Parilio Hotel, for instance. This holistic and architecturally impressive hotel is nestled in the northwestern corner of the island. In addition to its 33 beautifully designed suites, the hotel boasts a restaurant that offers a sophisticated twist on traditional cuisine. For those who enjoy interspersing leisurely beach days with scenic strolls, the island features a network of Byzantine footpaths connecting traditional villages. Alternatively, active travellers might prefer to visit Santa Maria Beach, one of Paros' most popular locations for surfing.

Gardeners warned to never put teabags in the bin without doing one thing first

Gardeners are being warned to never put teabags in their compost bin without doing one thing first - and it's all to do with the plastic that's in them Garden enthusiasts are being advised to put teabags in their garden this summer - but only if they tear them open first. Composting is a highly beneficial practice for your garden throughout the year, transforming your kitchen waste like potato peelings, carrot trimmings and banana skins into rich, nutritious compost that will enhance your garden plants and result in much larger, stronger fruits and vegetables as well as healthier flowers. You can initiate a compost heap anywhere in your garden with a simple plastic bin, although more costly and sophisticated options exist including wooden composters, multi-opening 'hot bins' and various other stylish solutions. ‌ READ MORE: Huge Amazon Prime Day sale slashes Coco & Eve's 'best tanner on the market' by 30% If you're on a budget, a basic plastic box or an old bin with a lid will suffice if you just add some airholes for the plant bacteria to utilise for decomposition. ‌ However, those adding teabags to their compost have been cautioned - you must rip open the bags first and pour the raw tea leaves directly in. This is due to the fact that many of the top branded teabags sold today actually contain plastic, reports the Express. Numerous supermarket brands use plastic in their teabags, which means they will never decompose in your compost, leaving behind a plastic residue which will also pollute your compost with leached plastic chemicals. ‌ Even plant-based teabags, such as those used by Yorkshire Tea, should be cut open, and the bag disposed of separately, not in the compost bin. Yorkshire Tea states: "PLA tea bags are sometimes called "plastic free", but we've never used that label and WRAP, the people behind the UK Plastics Pact, also advise against it because plant-based plastics are still plastics." Their instructions are to cut open used tea bags, compost the tea leaves at home, and dispose of the bag itself in your rubbish bin. Alternatively, you can simply put the whole tea bag in the rubbish. Consumer advice magazine Which? explains the issue with traditional tea bags: "Tea bags have traditionally been sealed with a plastic called polyproplene, which enables their edges to be heat sealed and stop them falling apart in hot water. "Small amounts were used, but it prevented them being composted and, due to the enormous amount of tea bags used in the UK, it generated a large amount of plastic waste." The recommended approach from the UK Tea & Infusions Association is to rip open the bags, place the used tea leaves on your compost heap, and dispose of the tea bag paper separately in your bin, where it will end up in landfill.
