Why Gen Z are turning to sunbeds for a tan this summer

Gen Z: Can you do me a favour and fake tan my back? Boomer: Jesus, you look like the bloke from those Tango adverts! It's not orange, it's Coco & Eve's £26 Bronzing Foam. It's got 4.2 million likes on TikTok and a bottle sold every 20 seconds last month. It sounds like something you'd order in a dessert parlour. And I'm not rubbing it in your back unless you've got a hazmat suit to hand. How else do you expect me to get my all-over mahogany tan? Ask David Dickinson. But why would you want to look like him? According to The Times' fashion editor Harriet Walker, an uber-dark glow is the 'new status symbol'. Not the 'posh and outdoorsy Jilly Cooper variety', but 'sun-snogged skin' à la Donald Trump. So, somewhere between Harissa and Bamboozle on the Farrow & Ball paint chart? In the words of Claudia Winkleman, I want to be 'burnt orange… like I live in Capri'. You live in Leeds. And it's raining. That's why we fake it. Jules Von Hep, founder of bougie fake tan brand Isle of Paradise, says demand for 'the darkest bronze shades possible' is higher than ever. That'll explain the faint smell of biscuits when I walk down the high street. Presumably it's your mother who's tasked with getting the stains off your bed sheets? I have one of The Range's £7.99 Fake Tan Sheet Protectors. It's a non-absorbent black sheet and was one of the store's bestselling products last year. Two nights sleeping on that and your entire room must smell like a Hobnobs factory. My Coco & Eve foam is tropical mango and guava scented, actually. I borrowed my daughter's fake tan once – it stuck to all my dry bits and I ended up looking like I'd marinated my feet in Nando's sauce. Rookie error. You need to follow beauty buff Juliana Shiel's Tanning Thursday tutorial. It's got 1.4 million views on TikTok. Don't you just slap it on like Dove's gradual-tan moisturiser? A proper tanning routine, Shiel says, has six steps: exfoliate, scrub, moisturise, apply the first layer of tan, apply a second layer, then rinse. I've built flatpack Ikea furniture in fewer steps. How much does all this cost? The UK's most popular brand, Bondi Sands, sells a full self-tan kit for £100. You'd be cheaper flying to Malaga and back for a day on the beach. Admittedly Claudia Winkleman's routine is more budget-friendly. 'I've used Bisto gravy granules to tan,' she told a podcast. 'And table salt and a scourer to exfoliate.' Her skin must be as rough as a cat's tongue. In my day, you lathered yourself in cooking oil, lay in the garden and baked. If your skin audibly sizzled, you knew it was working. Well, vitamin D is good for you, apparently. And plenty of my friends think that's reason enough to get back on the sunbeds. How has the government banned smoking indoors but not those human toasters? As The Week says, they've had a worrying rebrand. The UK's biggest chain has quadrupled its profits by selling tanning beds as 'collagen promoting and immunity boosting'. You youngsters are always going on about healthy living. How does roasting yourself in a carcinogenic coffin fit in with that? 'I use tanning beds because they boost serotonin production,' one 20something said on TikTok. 'They make me feel relaxed.' I'm not sure I'd be relaxed stuffed into what's essentially a three-by-two-metre oven. Some people have less lofty reasons. 'It stops my tan transferring to the toilet seat,' another user shared. Sounds like me slathering on Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil and sunning myself like a rotisserie chicken is the least of the NHS's problems. I'd go as red as a lobster given all the retinol skincare I use. Everyone knows red turns to bronze. In fact, I feel a new TikTok hashtag brewing for sunbathing die-hards. What UV is what you get.

This £29 express tanning mousse is being called the ‘new GOAT' of self-tan – and it's exactly what we need now that spring has sprung

Spring has officially arrived, and with it comes the return of bare legs, strappy dresses, and, of course, the rush to get that golden glow. But if you're not quite ready to commit to hours in the sun or hate the usual biscuit-smelling fake tans, we've found the solution everyone's raving about. Enter the Coco & Eve Sunny Honey Express Tanning Antioxidant Mousse. The brand's bestselling tan, which costs £29, promises to deliver your deepest, most beach-bronzed tan in just one hour. Yes, one hour. And this express tanning mousse is already making waves online, with beauty fans dubbing it the ' new GOAT of self-tanner '. And it's not hard to see why. Following in the footsteps of Coco & Eve's cult-favourite Bali Bronzing Foam, which reportedly sells one every 20 seconds, this new formula is shaping up to be an even bigger hit. Designed for speed and performance, the Express Tanning Antioxidant Mousse develops into a deep, natural-looking tan within 60 minutes, lasts up to a full week, and glides on streak-free. Perfect for last-minute plans, spontaneous nights out, or just faking that 'I spent the weekend in Ibiza' look without stepping foot in the sun. And unlike so many self-tanners that leave you feeling sticky, patchy, or smelling like a packet of digestives, Coco & Eve's latest innovation has been praised for its lightweight, fast-absorbing formula, and it 'smells amazing' too. Think tropical notes of coconut milk, mango, pineapple, vanilla, toffee, and a hint of sandalwood and tonka beans. But it's not just about the glow. The mousse is packed with skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, coconut extract, and antioxidant-enriched DHA to hydrate, nourish, and protect your skin while you tan. And reviewers are already obsessed. One wrote: 'The New GOAT of Self Tanners. This is hands down the best self-tanner in the market I've ever used - and I'm an avid self-tan user whose tried them all! The way my skin felt was incredible, and the colour… That colour… the deepest, most natural tan I have ever had. This express tan checks every single box!' Another raved: 'Absolutely love the colour and results of this tan. Easy to apply, only leave on for an hour, incredible!' With top notes of pear and almond, middle notes of mango and pineapple and base notes of sandalwood, this makes for a more pleasant improvement A third added: 'I love the speed of this tan! It's great to have an option that gives a deep, non-orangey colour in just an hour - unlike others that take 8+ hours. 'Perfect for last-minute plans and it smells amazing too. I'm definitely adding this to my routine - highly recommend!' If you're looking to hit the ground bronzed this season without the wait or hassle, Coco & Eve's Express Tanning Antioxidant Mousse might just be your spring beauty essential.

Beauty brand behind £26 tanning foam that sells every 20 seconds just dropped a new 'anti-ageing' product - and fans are already obsessed

Coco & Eve, the cult-favourite beauty brand behind the £26 tanning foam that sells every 20 seconds, has launched a new SPF tanning oil. The brand's latest release, the Tan Boosting Anti-Aging Body Oil SPF50, is a 'luxurious' body oil designed to deliver a triple benefit: high-level sun protection, visibly enhanced tanning, and targeted anti-ageing care. Coco & Eve Tan Boosting Anti-Aging Body Oil SPF50 While traditional tanning oils skimped on sun protection, the Tan Boosting Anti-Aging Body Oil has a healthy dose of SPF50 to provide protection against UVA and UVB rays. At the same time, its Tan-Boosting Peptide Complex works with your body to deepen and enhance your natural tan. £29 Shop While traditional tanning oils skimped on sun protection, the Tan Boosting Anti-Aging Body Oil has a healthy dose of SPF50 to provide protection against UVA and UVB rays. At the same time, its Tan-Boosting Peptide Complex works with your body to deepen and enhance your natural tan. The spray-on formula is also packed with skin-loving ingredients to support overall skin health. Watermelon Seed Oil, a powerful antioxidant, supports skin healing and repair, while Guava Extract, rich in beta-carotene, flavonoids and vitamin C, works to brighten and energise the skin. Pineapple Extract contributes a blend of vitamin C and B vitamins to hydrate, protect and visibly improve texture. Unlike traditional tanning oils that can feel greasy or clog pores, the brand description says the Coco & Eve Tan Boosting Anti-Aging Body Oil SPF50 is water-resistant, non-sticky, and absorbs quickly into the skin. The result? Silky and hydrated skin, and it's also lightly scented with a mango fragrance, giving you a beachy vibe from the moment it's applied. To get the best results, the brand recommends applying an even layer over the body 20 minutes before sun exposure, with reapplication every two hours, or after swimming or towel-drying - this is essential to ensure your skin doesn't become vulnerable to burning. Already praised by early reviewers, the Tan Boosting Anti-Aging Body Oil SPF50 is set to become a summer must-have. 'I absolutely love the Coco & Eve Tan Boosting Anti-Aging Body Oil SPF 45!' one reviewer wrote. 'It gave my skin a beautiful glow without feeling greasy. It's incredibly hydrating, which is perfect for my ageing skin, and the added sun protection is such a bonus. 'It also felt like it helped prolong my Coco & Eve sunless tan—definitely a new staple in my skincare routine!' Shop the Coco & Eve Tan Boosting Anti-Aging Body Oil SPF50 online at
