Sunset Crater National Monument stabbing: Suspect arrested

The Brief Brandon Begay, 31, is accused of stabbing another man at Sunset Crater National Monument in Flagstaff. The victim in the stabbing is expected to survive. Begay is accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - A suspect accused of stabbing another man at Sunset Crater National Monument in northern Arizona has been arrested. What we know The Coconino County Sheriff's Office says deputies on April 21 responded to reports of a man getting out of a car and obstructing traffic near Highway 89 and Silver Saddle Road. Deputies say the man was nearly hit by passing vehicles. "While in route, deputies were informed the individual had re-entered a white Ford Fusion with another male and was traveling north on Highway 89," the sheriff's office said. Shortly after, deputies learned the two men were seen at the Sunset Crater National Monument Visitor Center. "Deputies responding to that location were advised that the suspect vehicle had left, now with only one occupant, while the second male had left the area on foot," CCSO said. Authorities spotted the vehicle along Highway 89 and stopped it, where they found that the driver had been stabbed. "He informed officers that the individual who had left on foot from the visitor center was the suspect," CCSO said. The victim is expected to survive. Deputies learned the suspect was last seen walking toward Bonito Campground. "During a search of the campground and surrounding area, a male matching the description was spotted on Forest Road 776," CCSO said. "When a deputy attempted to make contact, the suspect fled on foot. He was eventually detained but was determined not to be the stabbing suspect." CCSO says the man was found to have outstanding warrants out of Coconino County. He was arrested and booked into jail. The stabbing suspect, identified as 31-year-old Brandon Begay, was arrested after deputies resumed their search near the visitor's center. "While searching for foot tracks in the area, officers located shoeprints leading from the campground into the nearby lava flow," CCSO said. "The shoeprints were followed, and the suspect was successfully located and taken into custody without further incident." Begay was booked into jail and is accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. What we don't know CCSO did not say what events led up to the stabbing. The stabbing victim was not identified.

Dog rescues 2-year-old who wandered 7 miles from home in Arizona

A 2-year-old boy was back with his family on Wednesday after a rancher's dog found him in the desert 7 miles from his home in Arizona, authorities said. The family of 2-year-old Boden Allen reported him missing on Monday after he wandered away in Seligman, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Deputies and more than 40 search-and-rescue personnel from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the neighboring Coconino County Sheriff's Office and other agencies sprang into action. They searched through the night for the toddler clad in a tank top and pajama pants, scouring rough high-desert terrain from the air and on the ground. A rescue helicopter's pilot spotted two mountain lions along the way. 'After 16 hours of searching, a rancher approximately 7 miles away reported that a young child had walked onto his property,' the sheriff's office said. 'Upon arrival at the ranch, deputies confirmed this was indeed the missing boy.' Buford, an Anatolian Pyrenees, had come to the rescue, finding the child on his nightly patrol for coyotes and other wildlife, rancher Scotty Dunton told the sheriff's office. He was heading out to town the next morning when he saw Buford sitting at the end of his driveway with the boy. 'I look up and the little kid's standing there with my dog,' Dunton said. 'It was a relief knowing that he was alive, so I was ecstatic that he was OK and that my dog found him.' Dunton said he figured Boden most likely followed the road along the power line running between his house and the boy's, traversing 'three big mountain ranges between here and his house, and big valleys.' Buford, who 'loves kids,' must have encountered the tot in a nearby horse pasture and guided him home, because 'that's what he does,' Dunton added, telling KTVK that the canine hero had earned himself a steak dinner. 'There was a thousand ways for that to go really, really bad and one good way, and luckily it turned out to be the good way,' he told KPNX. The Yavapai Sheriff's Office thanked everyone who had helped search, 'and of course, Buford the dog, who stayed with the boy and brought him to safety.' _____

Investigators unsure if remains from fiery crash belong to missing South Korean family

Arizona officials are working to determine whether additional human remains discovered in the debris of a fatal pileup crash on Interstate 40 on March 13 are those of the South Korean family who went missing in the area at the time of the crash. Jiyeon Lee, Taehee Kim and Junghee Kim have been missing for nearly two weeks after driving through a winter storm on their road trip between the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. Investigators have confirmed that one of the vehicles in the collision, which involved multiple passenger vehicles that 'were rear-ended, pushing them into, and in some cases, underneath crashed tractor-trailers,' was a BMW SUV, an update from the Coconino County Sheriff's Office said on Monday. The family had been traveling in a BMW rental vehicle, the sheriff's office said. The vehicle's GPS data showed the rental car was last on Interstate 40 westbound around 3:27 p.m., coinciding with the fatal pileup accident on the same interstate during a winter storm, according to a release from the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The crash happened around 3:27 p.m. on westbound Interstate 40 near milepost 159.5 in Williams, Arizona, on a snow and ice-covered interstate. Some of the vehicles involved in the crash burned for more than 20 hours at 'extreme temperatures, resulting in extensive destruction,' DPS told CNN Saturday. Initially, Arizona DPS reported that the accident involved 22 vehicles and 36 drivers and occupants, resulting in at least two fatalities and injuring 16 people. Over the weekend, highway patrol investigators announced they had discovered additional human remains. The intensity and prolonged duration of the fire 'have posed significant challenges for identification efforts,' the sheriff's office noted on Monday, requiring 'meticulous examination' in the process of identifying the additional remains found. 'The Yavapai County Medical Examiner's Office is diligently working to ascertain whether identification is possible,' the sheriff's office said. 'We understand the urgency and the emotional toll this uncertainty places on the families and the public. We kindly ask for patience and understanding as our teams continue to work with care and precision to bring clarity to this heartbreaking situation.' The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles told CNN it would provide 'full support if the investigative authorities request cooperation regarding this matter.'
